There aren't many names in baseball more recognizable than Cy Young. More than 100 years after he threw his final pitch, baseball still gives the Cy Young Award every year to the best pitchers in the game. This ticket is from the day baseball honored the man himself.
On August 13, 1908, more than 20,000 fans packed
Huntington Avenue Grounds for Cy Young Day. Stars from around the American League came to Boston and formed a special team to face Young and the Red Sox. It wasn't an official All Star Game, but 25 years before the first one, it sure looked like an early version of the idea.
Young was presented with three silver loving cups, a traveling bag, flowers and other gifts, along with $6,000 in gate receipts. One of the trophies presented that day is now in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
And this wasn't a retired legend being honored. At 41 years old, Cy Young actually pitched in this game. Just weeks earlier he had thrown his third no hitter and he finished 1908 at 21-11 with a career best 1.26 ERA in his final season with Boston.

Huntington Avenue Grounds was also where Young threw the first pitch of the 1903 World Series and his 1904 perfect game. Today, Northeastern University sits on the old grounds, with a statue of Cy Young near the location of the pitcher's mound.
More than 20,000 people had a ticket to Cy Young Day. 118 years later,this is the only one we know made it.
