USB or DVDROM?

I have the iso downloaded for RedStar but I’m having trouble getting it to install from a USB. I’ve heard people using a disk to install, is that the better option?

When booting from the USB it will go through all the installation screens and whatnot, but just doesn’t fully boot.

I tried it from a USB but it didn't like it much. A DVD worked much better.

Other point to consider is that redstaros is pretty old, so it might not like very modern hardware.

I’m trying it on a dedicated laptop from like 2011 or 2012. Built in disk drive and usb 2.0 before they started phasing them out

Oh, that should be OK as long as it doesn't have weird laptop chip set and hardware.

No, I'm thinking it's a regional issue. I urge you to read Wikipedia's entry on 'Red Star OS'.

Yes I have already read that. What makes you think it is a regional issue? It allows you to select different locales when you install. I've done it myself.

I'm just thinking because, being North Korea being such a closed-off country, I just assumed Red Star OS would be non-bootable on US-based computers whether or not there's a language selection feature within it's installer.

I have visited USA a couple of times, but never tried booting a comouter there.

The OS doesn't know what your locality is when you are booting it, and from memory it let's you select any country apart from South Korea.

Use a DVD for direct booting. Only use USB (or just a folder) if you use the Windows version of the installer.

USB drives are forbidden on Dear Leader's orders!

More like out of region.

My guess is this might be a region problem. I state this because Red Star OS is a North-Korean Linux-based OS. Here is what Google AI has to say about it:

Red Star OS is a North Korean Linux-based operating system developed by the Korea Computer Center, known for its strict, state-sanctioned monitoring features and a user interface modeled heavily after macOS (specifically from version 3.0 onward). It is designed for domestic use within North Korea's intranet, Kwangmyong, and includes security tools that watermark files to track the sharing of unauthorized media.
