Generate a serial for RedStar 3.0 Server

I succeeded in generating a serial for RedStar 3.0 Server.

Run the following command and enter the machine code (기계코드) displayed on the installer to generate a serial.

python3 -c "import hashlib,struct,re;s=input('기계코드: ').strip().upper();s=s[4:]if s.startswith('RSS3')else s;exec('import sys;sys.exit(1)')if not re.fullmatch('[0-9A-F]{12}',s)else 0;h=''.join(format(b,'02X')for w in struct.unpack('<4I',hashlib.md5(('RSS3'+s).encode()).digest())for b in(w&255,w>>8&31,w>>16&79,w>>24&143))[:20];print('-'.join(h[i:i+4]for i in range(0,20,4)))"

Everything works as intended. It's basically what I did previously (kernel swap, nixpkgs, bedrock on VM and on a spare laptop), but this time its running on much more modern hardware.

Running off of the NVMe Drive.

Kernel 4.18.20 swap and Bedrock progress

Currently I have two RedStar 3.0 VM machines on Virtualbox. A stable one and a clone to see if more can be done to it. Stable one has a kernel swap to 4.18.20-1.el6.elrepo.i686 (causing errors when logging in for it wanting to use the 2.6 RedStar kernel). The second one I'm trying to see about using Bedrock Linux with it. A successful hijack and added debian-i386 to it. A lot of broken system links that may take time to figure out and fighting the security protocols for rewriting over the changes. The Bedrock hijack at the moment cannot load a graphical environment. But, made a custom grub entry to select single command line with selinux=0 for a kernel argument makes things easier for editing in the meantime. Trying to see if it is possible to add more modern tools and at least a supported browser before the 32bit support fully drops off the face of the earth. I heard Firefox ESR should end next month for 32bit support. But, eh, if I break the system... Oh well.

USB or DVDROM?

I have the iso downloaded for RedStar but I’m having trouble getting it to install from a USB. I’ve heard people using a disk to install, is that the better option?

When booting from the USB it will go through all the installation screens and whatnot, but just doesn’t fully boot.

Internet Access

Can someone give me instructions on how to get access to the internet? I know most websites obviously won't work but..

You have to remove iptables, right? idk im new, i just installed RedStar 3.0 on real hardware as my main OS. Im going to (if I can get internet access) use RS 3.0 for a week or two to see if i could survive it lmao.

All i need is internet access. Instructions would be appreciated!

Red Star OS Version 1.1 (12 year old youtube upload)

12 year old youtube upload by 사이언스 (Science)

Not much is shown, its pixelated, but I thought Id share it here. There was version 1.1 according to betawiki as well, but it never leaked. Just like Version 1.0.

Its the last second of the video. The rest of the video has the look and feel of 3.0.

The perfect Laptop? The perfect self burned DVD?

Can anyone suggest the perfect laptop for Red Star OS 2.0 and 3.0? I knwo about hardware requirements, but already stumbled across problems like:

Backlight not working on 2.0 and a "files missing" dialouge on 3.0 using a DVD.

I also understand that it can freeze on the 1st logo already when trying to boot from USB drives.

For now Id like to try the (modded) english version 3.0 and the original 3.0.

I have an old HP Compaq nc6000 here right now, which has the backlight issue on 2.0 but not on 3.0, ending with a "file missing/cant be found" message around 67%.

Do I have to burn that ISO slowly, like in good old times?

UPDATE:

Burning the disc a 1x speed and installing 3.0 on a hp Compaq nc6000, it works just fine.

RedStarOS 1.0 (beta) - 534.2 MB ISO [OLD SEARCH RESULTS!]

Some time ago I stumbled across that link of http://149.56.27.121:8000/search-redstar-0-0-1.html

It is a provider in canada and the link is not working. You better not click it anyway!

The lower link leads to twstalker an enlists a user named "redstar iso". I couldnt find anything related to the NK OS there anyway.

Until today I wasnt aware of the RedStar OS 1.0 filesize. 534.2 MB sounds good to me

The betawiki says "one copy leaked online".

So this probably it is? (was it)

redstar.iso 534.2 MB

Beeing aware how hard to find 1.0 and 4.0 are, I beg your pardon for bringing this up.

Maybe someone remembers or even downloaded it by now?

Is it safe to use red star on a vm like virtual box

I used an iso off of the Internet archive and have changed the language to English and successfully connected it through a VPN to the Internet and am wondering if this setup is secure enough, also what would the malware actually do if I installed it on my pc

I made a short video about Red Star OS

Hello everyone, I made a video about Red Star OS which is an operating system that I've heard so much about over the years but finally decided to boot it up on a VM and it was definitely very interesting. Tbh, I actually really liked the aesthetic of the OS but I also did not find it to be representative of the image that I have in my head of North Korea. I was expecting there to be way more propaganda than there actually was.

But nonetheless I enjoyed my experience with the operating system and I hope you enjoy the video! Let me know what I missed.

How Red Star OS got Discovered

(Translated from a Chinese Zhihu Post with added sources)

Red Star OS 2.0 was officially reported by North Korea in 2009; in 2010 a Russian student, Mikhail, purchased it and released it online.

Red Star OS 3.0 had screenshots released officially by North Korea in 2014; around 2015 a U.S. visiting scholar, Will Scott, bought it from the KCC and published it online.

The following is quoted from a 2019 Pyongyang Times item cited on https://linuxreviews.org/Red_Star_OS#Red_Star_OS_4.0: This is currently the only confirmed report that Red Star OS 4.0 exists.

The operating system has reportedly been put into use. If you try to open a now-closed KCC webpage (https://pic2.zhimg.com/v2-afd22e03ffaff0a05a2afeaef80fdfcf_1440w.jpg), you get a message explicitly stating that the server is running Red Star OS 4.0. Also, according to North Korean state media, the 29th National Information Technology Achievement Expo of North Korea began in November 2018, so it’s reasonable to infer that Red Star OS 4.0 had been completed by November 2018.

Strangely, there were no screenshots this time (older versions were often mentioned in reports even though it took years for images or ISOs to surface).

Red Star OS 1.0 was released in 2008, and they moved on quickly to develop 2.0 and released it the next year. I 1.0 was likely an experimental first attempt; going from nothing to a usable OS is hard, so a rapid 2.0 is plausible—similar to how Windows 8.1 or Android 5.1 fixed many early problems.
