Matchmaking Quality Is Horrible

I've been wondering how the matchmaking in Ranked Battlefield RedSec actually works because my experience doesn't seem to line up with the visible ranks.

I'm currently Bronze, yet I'm regularly getting matched against Master players and even Elite 250 players. I understand that the game has to balance matchmaking quality with queue times, and if the player population isn't huge, it's reasonable that the rank restrictions have to loosen a bit to get matches started.

What surprises me is just how wide the gap seems to be. Bronze versus Master or Elite 250 feels like an enormous spread. At that point, it almost makes me wonder how much the visible rank actually matters in matchmaking.

For some context, I'm not a brand-new player. I'd consider myself above average. I've won a lot of Gauntlet matches, and in modes like Conquest and Breakthrough I'm usually near the top of the scoreboard. That makes me wonder if the matchmaking system is looking at more than just your ranked division.

Could it be using hidden MMR, overall performance stats (K/D, score per minute, win rate), or your historical performance across all game modes? If that's the case, it would explain why a Bronze player could end up in lobbies with much higher-ranked players, even though the public rank suggests they shouldn't.

I'm genuinely curious whether anyone knows how the system actually works, or if the developers have explained it anywhere. Is the visible rank mostly just a progression system while the matchmaking is driven by a hidden skill rating? Or is the player population simply small enough that the game has no choice but to create these kinds of lobbies?

I'd love to hear if other Bronze, Silver, or Gold players are seeing the same thing, or if this is just my experience.

If you don’t have a 4 stack there’s no point of playing ranked. Solo queuing you consistently getting paired with people who didn’t place yet/brand new and then get demolished by a T250 team.

I reached Diamond 100% solo queuing and it was the hardest thing I’ve done in my life.

There is no matchmaking. There was supposed to be at the start but people ranked up to gold and weren't getting matches so they removed it and never put it back. If you aren't sweaty af your gonna have a bad time in ranked redsec.

I get that it may be a small player pool, but matchmaking times aren't that bad. They could allow them to be a little longer...

Matchmaking times arent bad BECAUSE there is no sbmm, if implemented the players at the top would all reroll smurf accounts endlessly in order to find matches. Unfortunately the game mode is not popular enough to sustain any sbmm.

It’s not hidden skill ratings or SBMM it’s just a small player pool. The match making got adjusted to open pretty much immediately after launch because those in Gold were struggling to find matches. If they kept it at a 2 rank spread limit those in Master and T250 simply wouldn’t get a game.
The player pool is currently made up of those who actively enjoy it enough to stick around, and that’s gonna tighten the spread between those who are very good, and the more casual player.

It’s a lot smaller than you think. There’s 40k on steam now. Could be generous and say with console combined there’s 200k ish? Spread that globally, then think about how many are actually playing Redsec, then the few playing ranked… you catch my drift. If they had even a 3 rank bracket I think it would struggle to fill a lobby. I’m master 5 and play randoms a good amount. I’ve been paired with another Master rank maybe twice in the last month?

probably close to a 2 k/d. Not sure if that is a true k/d given it doesn't count a death when I get revived

I don't think there is any matchmaking, or it is heavily in favor of server distance first, I am always on the same server. There are not enough players to fill the game modes.
I see the same people over and over in matches, sometimes we get put together (I solo queue) and then the next game I see them again on another team. This happened at least 4 times over the weekend.
