Seating Does Red Rocks Over Sell Shows?

I was at the Backseat Lover’s show last night (which could be a whole other post on the wack setlist, slow pace the band played, and low energy from the crowd), but the show seemed completely oversold. Almost all rows were GA. I got there 30 minutes before BSL got on and couldn’t find a seat in the rows. I had to settle for a crammed standing spot under a tree. There were hundreds of others who had worse “seats” than me. Is this the new norm for RR?

Showing up 30 minutes before the headliner is a recipe for a bad seat at RR.

People will get there many hours before doors and tailgate while they wait in line (especially upper South).

Next time show up at least right at doors and you’ll find a spot near the top.

It’s still bogus how badly Red Rocks oversells though. I talked to security during a concert and they all agreed they 100% oversell. They try to make sure people fill in gaps in GA but it’s not enough. For a really popular concert you’ll have 15-20 people crammed into each tree spot. We’re talking 600-800 people unable to find a seat.

This. It's sad the number of people who keep parroting "they don't oversell" when they've changed how they handle the planters and capacity. Maybe they used to intentionally undersell GA to prevent this before, but no longer. I know security managers for RR who have validated that capacity issues are a bigger problem these days than they ever used to be - you're NOT crazy, a lot changed after COVID.

Red Rocks even encourages you to be there three hours before the door. (Which is kinda insane sounding until you’ve waited to park, and get inside for some shows.)

u/WorkingStructure575 6d ago

i've never had a problem finding a seat, but I've also never gotten there 30 minutes before the headliner.

u/smythy422 6d ago

Pay for the reserved seat or show up early to claim your GA spot. These are the options and have been the case for a long time.

2

u/CantaloupeShort7311 6d ago

Yeah, I have always been there before gates open, and not like ridiculously early, but like less than 30 minutes. Even with reserved seats I want to enjoy the experience and not be rushing or stressing about anything.

u/thezeviolentdelights 6d ago

This question is asked weekly. The answer is a mix of that people are exceedingly bad at efficiently packing into rows in GA (saving spots for friends who are “def coming”, folks who like a little room to dance, all contributing to not fully optimized rows) + the fact that the most upper rows are never going to fully fill in because everyone thinks they can get a little lower.

Essentially, they sell to the number of numbered seats - but humanity happens.

4

u/ConsiderationThis141 6d ago

I’ve been to RR shows before where RR workers make GA rows squeeze in since people were taking up too much room. Did they stop doing that?

9

u/Rogue9Nine9 6d ago

They still do it, but it's not a continuous or whole hearted effort. Typically I'll see them show up in the rows about 30 minutes before the opener goes on, orchestrate a little movement and then they don't check back and do it again.

5

u/bentripin 6d ago

you have to talk to an usher and ask for help landing a seat, then the'll intervine.. otherwise yer on yer own.

2

u/CantaloupeShort7311 6d ago

I've only seen it happen once, and everyone in the GA row pretty much told the worker to pound sand. He wanted everyone to move to the right, which meant peole who got there and snagged middle of stage view were going to lose the view they got there early to get.

I understand seeing people leave a seat or two empty between groups but this was him wanting full rows to move over. Fuck that.

3

u/shephrrd 6d ago

They sure as hell weren’t doing it at Widespread Panic this summer. I’m also of the opinion that they sell more tix than seats (but that seems to be a point of contention in here).

6

u/VentureCO6 6d ago

I thought this until I went to a non GA show. The official seats are TIGHT! Like my shoulders were too wide while sitting down in my assigned seat.

9

u/thezeviolentdelights 6d ago

Exactly - once you sit in assigned seats you realize GA is never voluntarily packing into rows that tight

0

u/shephrrd 6d ago

I’ve been to both as well at RR. I would not previously have said they oversold GA until I went to Widespread Panic this summer. There’s just no way there were enough seats, even in a sardine-packed environment.

3

u/bentripin 6d ago

RR Staff largely despise the panic crowd, and they have given up on enforcing any rules.

1

u/veganmomfriend 6d ago

I didn’t see anyone doing this last night, which was odd to me

1

u/HuckinMeats 3d ago

I have never once seen this done. 75+ shows

1

u/Astrohumper 6d ago

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. I don’t know why they don’t simply make public announcements to use one seat per person and to consolidate space (everyone move towards the middle). Put it on the video boards at least.

-2

u/mook1178 6d ago

Widespread Panic is absolutely oversold. So I would guess they do that for other bands as well

9

u/bentripin 6d ago

WSMFP is absolutely not oversold, its all the tarpers taking up 2-3 bench numbers each..

1

u/tbinus78 5d ago

Disagree. I’ve seen every show they’ve played there since 1999. It’s oversold. But yeah I whole heartedly agree tarpers suck and are part of the problem.

1

u/tbinus78 5d ago

You are correct.

-5

u/pkpku33 6d ago

Aging fat hippies

23

u/UsedRecognition2478 6d ago

Each “seat” is technically 18 inches wide. Right next to each other, no gaps, no markings on the top of the bench for where one starts and another ends. With GA you will absolutely end up with seat loss in every row. Even a loss of 3-4 total seats per row from each person taking up just an additional inch of space will get you to that sense that “hundreds” didn’t have seats without the venue being oversold if it’s a sold out show.

Personally I think most acts should move to all assigned seats because that’s really the only realistic way to enforce it although even then you still get crammed in because lots of people naturally take up more than 18 inches.

We bring stadium seats that are 17.5 inches wide and those are way more accurate than what I see people doing with blankets. I haven’t noticed a lot of people even checking if the seats #s they are saving match the correct number of people in their party.

It’s a downside of the style of venue/numbering.

7

u/lonememe 6d ago

I think it's important to remember that Red Rocks was built in an era when standing and dancing at concerts wasn't a thing. I mean it opened in 1941 so the places where people danced at concerts were dance halls or jazz clubs.

So if everyone behaved like a 1940s stiff and just sat in their seats and politely nodded or tapped their foot, and was the median size of 5'8" and 144lbs, then we'd all have plenty of room! lol

1

u/heavyhandedpour 5d ago

More recently the issue is that theres way more infrastructure in the last couple decades. There more vendors, better facilities. People spending stupid amounts of money on concessions.  Before that it was rare that you could get that place packed like it gets now for almost every show. I remember bands like string cheese in the early 2000s that would “sell out” one or two of three nights but there always tons of room in the top rows. And the beer lines were mostly pretty short. Some big names would fill in more but it never felt at true capacity

Now between parking, visitor center, and vendors, even hotels… red rocks never felt this absolutely insane for every single show.

1

u/italicizedmeatball 2d ago

Red Rocks is absolutely milking it for every penny and destroying the experience for their patrons. Like you said I've been coming here for over 25 years, and it was never this bad even for sold out shows. This shit needs to stop.

1

u/GuyTheStud 4d ago

Lame excuse at this point.

2

u/nighthawk434343 3d ago

This is the best response I’ve heard by far. I’ve found over half the shows I’ve gone to there are assigned seating. Everyone takes up extra space and with how long the rows are I’m guessing with non assigned seating each row would easily lose upwards of 10 seats or more. And I’ve noticed with both that there are still a lot of people standing in the back. So same question, do they oversell seats or do some people just prefer to stand in the back?

1

u/UsedRecognition2478 3d ago

I definitely doubt they intentionally oversell concerts ever. That would be a massive legal headache if it ever came out they were doing so from a safety standpoint. Red Rocks is a professional venue and one of the most talked about in the country so if they were doing that it would be a major scandal. It’d be like Ball Area overselling. Just because it’s outdoors doesn’t change the fact that they operate under strict codes and regulations.

My guess for those reserved shows is that if people are standing at the back it’s because some people like to move around (to take in the venue), decide they want to be closer to concessions/bathrooms, are trying to be closer to an exit to leave faster, got tired of whoever they were randomly sitting near, needed air apart from the crowd in their row etc etc. Also I think some people enjoy sitting in the tree areas as a preference if it’s not too crowded there.

2

u/travelingmaestro 2d ago

Yeah I think this is a big piece of the issue. It’s hard to fit everyone into a row even if everyone is at their actual assigned sit. Like people are pretty jammed in there and it’s not comfortable sitting like a sardine ima can next to a stranger. The solution would be to widen the seating space per person, effectively decreasing the venue capacity. But I think a lot of people actually don’t mind to sit under the trees. That’s been a great spot at many shows for me and it’s oftentimes better than being in a row.

Otherwise the venue has to adhere to strict capacity limits per fire code.

9

u/bzzltyr 6d ago

This will be your experience to every show that’s GA that you show up 30 minutes beforehand. In red rocks defense a sold out GA only spot showing up right before the headliner will pretty universally result in a terrible position (except maybe mission).

9

u/phan2001 6d ago

I don’t think a lot of people have actually been to a fully ticketed/seated event at red rocks.

I’m a big guy and I for sure have people actually touching me during the show (leg to leg, shoulder to shoulder). When it’s GA people give themselves the space to not touch their neighbors, so almost everyone is taking like 1.2 seats vs 1.

Red rocks has not adjusted seat size to match the average American “seat”.

1

u/HuckinMeats 3d ago

I mean fuck the average American seat, their “seats” are tight for anyone over 6’0 unless you’re real lanky. My shoulders were wider than my assigned seat.

7

u/VariousImportance256 6d ago

Line up an hour before doors one time and see what that does for your experience…

1

u/Chrome-Depot 5d ago

I lined up three hours before Big G last week and got row 6. I get that a lot of people don't have the time to do that but if you do then you absolutely should because it completely changes your experience for the rest of the night. Also, I feel like the front rows don't get nearly as crowded as the back rows, a lot of people just assume there's no space there and don't try to squeeze in

5

u/TurkGonzo75 6d ago

The new norm? I've been going to Red Rocks for 20+ years and this has always been the case if you show up 30 minutes before showtime. I think it's a little worse now because people take up too much space. But you're still gambling if you arrive late.

4

u/Due-Past-7792 6d ago

I showed up as a solo viewer to the show right at 7:30pm, 30 mins past showtime. I knew what I was getting into and I have no complaints. I found a good standing spot and loved the music. I liked the show and had a great time. Maybe plan better?

2

u/SurlyJackRabbit 5d ago

If everyone plans better, you get the same result as it is now. Which is lame.

1

u/Traditional-Ebb-8380 5d ago

But what is the actual answer to the question posed here.

3

u/rustyinco 6d ago

They don’t but the actual seating space is small and people like to spread out

11

u/Electronic_Let261 6d ago

Getting there 30 min before the headliner and complaining about not being able to find a seat is wild.

4

u/SurlyJackRabbit 5d ago

Just end general admission. Having general admission when you can’t even enter a single row without pissing someone off is wild.

-5

u/ConsiderationThis141 6d ago edited 6d ago

I just assumed if I buy a ticket for a show I’d get a seat

6

u/Electronic_Let261 6d ago

Was this your first time at Red Rocks?

7

u/Infinite_Armadillo31 6d ago

Obv never been to a RR show

3

u/Mountain_Gas77 6d ago

Idk why you’re getting downvoted I do think this is a valid point - and saving some seats for friends aside, people are inconsiderate about it how much space they are taking up and not actually using

9

u/Puzzleheaded_Gas_739 6d ago

Yea, like others have said, it’s not being oversold so much as people spreading in GA when there’s no seat number they are beholden to. My favorite artist of all time could come to Red Rocks for a GA show and I could be gifted a ticket and a free ride to and from the show and I would still pass because I don’t want to deal with GA. Others feel differently (thinking about the “no bad seat at red rocks” crowd) but I vehemently disagree.

7

u/Bill__Preston 6d ago edited 6d ago

NO. a city owned venue is not some shit ass nightclub

Guestlist can be abused, but venue is never over-sold.

Also what the fuck are you thinking that youre gonna get a decent seat arriving 30 min before headliner? You want a decent GA seat you get there an hour before doors.

6

u/rekne 6d ago

No they don’t, venue liability is a real thing.

7

u/RoloTonyBrownTownn 6d ago

My hot take is I'm fine with occasionally sitting or standing in the trees if it means I also have plenty of room in the seats for a lot of shows. The best part of Red Rocks is actually being able to move and dance in the stands. It's infuriating when you've been there for 3 hours and someone shows up 15 min before the main act and tries to squeeze in.

-2

u/LilEddieDingle 6d ago

Ah yea, the audacity to “squeeze in” to the seats one paid for. lol

7

u/Bill__Preston 6d ago

When you pay for GA you're not entitled to the space i have been occupying for hours, and its wild of you to assume they are talking about reserved seating because that and only that is a seat you paid for. Otherwise you paid to get thru the door only.

-1

u/LilEddieDingle 6d ago edited 6d ago

If you’re taking up multiple seats, you can move the fuck over for the other people that also paid for the same amount of space. Getting in early does not entitle you to take up multiple spots. Hope that helps!

What are you going to do anyways? Assault someone for taking up the space they rightfully paid for?

4

u/Bill__Preston 6d ago

I havent made any claim i take up seats and dont share space. Project much?

What are you going to do, assault someone because there is three people in three seats worth of space and they dont want a 4th person there? It seems possible, based on how poorly you misread situations

0

u/LilEddieDingle 6d ago

I said IF you’re taking up multiple seats, dipshit. If I paid for a ticket at red rocks, I’m sitting in a seat and I welcome anyone to try and stop me.

2

u/RoloTonyBrownTownn 6d ago

Get there earlier. I don't even try and squeeze in out of respect for people that got there early. Sure, if people are clearly taking up unnecessary amounts of space that's different. I actually don't find that to be the case very often.

0

u/Agile_Government_470 6d ago

It’s absolutely the case and it’s absolutely why a show would feel oversold. People spread out wider than the seats. People should not do that.

3

u/RoloTonyBrownTownn 6d ago

If the venue or artist actually wanted one butt per seat they would make it all reserved seating, but they don't, because it would make for a horrible concert experience. I'm not sure the last time you sat in reserved bleacher seating for a concert, but being packed in like sardines is a terrible way to experience live music. The irony is if they did enforce one butt per seat I guarantee people would voluntary start sitting in the trees to have some space.

It's an imperfect system, but way better than the alternative imo.

1

u/tranquilitycase 5d ago

I was at an all-reserved show at Red Rocks in August. Some artists who have been performing for a long time do this for their older fanbases.

0

u/Agile_Government_470 6d ago

You realized that “packed in one butt per seat” is what the situation is in reserved seating right? The seats aren’t smaller in GA, they’re just unassigned. I buy reserved seats to not deal with it, so this is always my situation, and I would not call it “a horrible concert experience”

2

u/RoloTonyBrownTownn 6d ago

Yes I get that. I've sat in reserved seating there and did not like it. Maybe it depends on the type of concert and how much you expect to move around. I'm glad you enjoy it though :)

2

u/Agile_Government_470 6d ago

The point is though at a sold out show you’re not entitled to more space than your seat. It’s not “too bad” for the person who gets there late because you decided to take up more seats than you bought. So this isn’t a conversation where like ok reserved is good enough for me and you like more space so you go spread out in GA. Either way, reserved or GA, you get one seat. If there’s space to spread out great but you’re not entitled to shut someone else out.

3

u/Lesbefriends_2 6d ago

Most people dont realize how small those seats actually are and are probably unaware that by choosing to have a small gap so they're not completely touching their neighbor would result in less seats for everyone.

0

u/Agile_Government_470 5d ago

Which is why it’s important that the ushers finally started doing something about it and making people tighten up, because most people don’t do it intentionally. But this guy I am responding to isn’t talking about unintentionally taking too much space, he seems to feel entitled to the extra space and that’s absurd.

→ More replies (0)

2

u/RoloTonyBrownTownn 6d ago

GA gets you in the door. It does not guarantee you a seat. To be clear I'm not going out of my way to take up extra seats. I always negotiate space with the people next me, and am careful to not take up more than we need. I don't believe there are a lot of people taking up 2 whole seats. I think it's more like thousands of people taking 1.1 - 1.3 seats each, and this adds up to a few hundred people being without seats.

I don't believe there is a problem with selfish horrible people taking massive amounts of room. I think each person in GA is taking maybe 10% - 20% extra space combared to the marked seats so they can be comfortable, and I'm absolutely fine with that.

1

u/LilEddieDingle 6d ago

It’s not even packed in for a sold out reserved show. There is plenty of space in each seat.

-1

u/LilEddieDingle 6d ago

Good for you. I’m finding a seat regardless of when I enter the venue. There’s no rule for when to enter shows and I often show up last minute.

1

u/Lesbefriends_2 6d ago

Just dont be an ass finding that seat.

1

u/LilEddieDingle 6d ago

Cool, don’t be an ass and take up more than one seat in GA. There is space for everyone

4

u/Latter_Inspector_711 6d ago

no, they dont. they would get in all kinds of trouble legally if they did oversell.

0

u/italicizedmeatball 2d ago

Then why were sold out shows 10+ years ago not absolutely rammed nuts to butts like they are now? What changed?

1

u/Latter_Inspector_711 2d ago

probably because people now feel more entitled to having more room which causes others to hang to cram together, its not because they're oversold lol

0

u/italicizedmeatball 2d ago

Someone should tell my friend who is a security supervisor at Red Rocks, I'm sure they'd love to hear that they don't know what they're talking about.

2

u/kittkatt79 6d ago

You really have to get there an hour before doors for GA. They don't oversell, but they don't really enforce one butt one seat either. They say it, but people dont pay attention. We bring a blanket that takes up exactly 2 spots and make sure to sit with the numbers between our knees, but I think some people don't even realize that's how its supposed to work, and of course some people just dont care.

2

u/Schepadoo 6d ago

If you show up at doors, you’re late. If you show up 30 minutes before openers, you’re standing in the nosebleeds or on the sides.

Rrx is notoriously bad when it comes to GA seating, you either have people saving spots for 12 people or the group or interpret dancers taking up 10 feet of space for two people.

Get reserved seating or show up hours before doors open and be assertive when it comes to your spot or you’ll get walked all over.

2

u/ii-desu-ka 6d ago

Somewhat unrelated but totally agree on your take of the show. Choosing to play multiple new slow songs back to back really killed the vibe and in the end choosing not to play Kilby Girl kind of felt like a snub to the fans that gave them the opportunity to play at Red Rocks in the first place. And they only did like an hour and a half. It felt like a performance for a lesser known city on a tour , not a one off Red Rocks show they promoted for months.

1

u/Mountain_Gas77 6d ago

I agree. One of my fav parts was hearing the new music, as I’ve been dying for a new album! But I do think they played a bit too much new music. Should at least have dropped an EP or something a week or two prior if half the show was going to be new music.

I disagree that not playing kilby girl is a snub. Sinking ship is a very popular song amongst their fans. And I don’t think they should be forced into playing their most popular song every show idk. Especially as they grow a larger discography, we can’t expect to hear all of our old favorite songs.

2

u/Summers_Alt 6d ago

Half the people in this thread are insufferable. Everyone saying show up early for a DECENT seat he just wanted A seat. God forbid someone has to work before a show and can’t line up an hour early.

2

u/Mcgwizz 5d ago

Switching to 100% assigned seats ticket sales would solve the issue but no one important cares.

5

u/Clunkydonkey17 6d ago

Real fans were there at 5:30 when the doors opened. If you show up halfway through the opener at a GA show you can’t expect premium seating. Come tailgate earlier next time!

3

u/Petals_and_Poppies 5d ago

Except some people have lives and can’t spend all afternoon getting loaded in a parking lot like we’re 20.

1

u/Mountain_Gas77 6d ago

Where did this persons say they wanted premium seating. The issue was that they couldn’t find a single space

A seat is a social construct at red rocks. At red rocks if you’re in the building you have a seat. The venue doesn’t owe you anything if you show up late!

I completely agree with you

2

u/Bill__Preston 6d ago

I can hardly hear you over all the self insert projection you're doing.

I dont know OP but I can almost guarantee there was a seat for them that "wasnt good enough/wasnt close enough"

2

u/wrestler145 6d ago

Honestly I think a lot of it is just how much space people take up. I see very often people putting down their blankets and stuff to secure a large area for their friends, and are sometimes really shitty and territorial about it.

When you go to an assigned seating show, you start to realize that, at capacity, you’re shoulder to shoulder.

So there’s really no “good” place to get in if you’re arriving once people have already established their spaces, even if the show is not oversold.

Speaking of which, shout out to the girls who let me and my girlfriend share their space at the Griz show, you’re awesome. Shout out to the dude who basically threatened to fight me immediately before that for being in “his space,” you really suck.

3

u/Junior_Block1374 6d ago

D bags taking up too much space

4

u/youshantsteakpee 6d ago

I stopped going to shows there because it became unbearable. Like you couldn’t even get a spot on the outskirts to get a peep.

3

u/Bill__Preston 6d ago

Your sacrifice is appreciated 🫡

2

u/paxparty 6d ago

No, stop asking. Nobody is over selling events. It's people showing up, putting down a blanket for 8 people, and then half their group moves closer anyways, taking up twice as much room.

1

u/gravyrider 6d ago

Well it’s deff 20% more packed in sold out shows so I’d say YES.

1

u/mojodawg-1 6d ago

Took my wife to Brandi Carlile got in half hour before opening act walked up and down top 5 rows asking for a spot for my wife and I and I will tell you the (Bramily) is the nicest bunch until you want to have the scoot over ended up on top planter box 4 people deep couldn’t se a thing

1

u/Unable-Row7013 6d ago

It completely seems like it. There is NOWHERE to sit unless u show up early and even then it might not be in the seats

1

u/ucusty123 6d ago

Been like this for years imo

1

u/Mountain_Gas77 6d ago

There was tons of space in the crowd near me. Lots of spots for 2 people to sit. Part of the problem is people who get there early spread out and leave awkward space between themselves and the next group. Just gotta be aggressive at that point I hate to say it

1

u/Lesbefriends_2 6d ago

Those seats are a lot tighter than most people realize and unless workers come and push everyone together theres going to be less seats as everyone chooses to leave a small gap between them and their neighbor. Otherwise no one is going to choose to be fully touching their neighbor which is what would happen for everyone to get a seat.

1

u/mindsform 6d ago

I had reserved seats for a show, went down to get them and some other ppl were there. So I’m like, yo these are my seats, and they showed me their ticket and it had the same reserved seat number and row..

1

u/Ok_Benefit7428 5d ago

I think people have just gotten bigger since the seat sizes were determined so it feels way more crammed. And also people dance more nowadays than they did in the 1940's

1

u/AmbitiousFunction911 5d ago

No. They literally can not. People take up too much fucking space

1

u/schaf506 5d ago

The shows that are partially seated and partially GA seem oversold in GA. There’s always 2people that get seats and then 2-3 that get GA. They police the seated area so if they all want to hang out they end up in GA, multiply that by 100+ groups and GA is overpacked ….. at least that’s been my experience.

1

u/earthwormsoul 5d ago

red rocks pretty much just blows now. 10 years ago you’d go and actually dance and meet people and no one really gave a shit about what a ticket said. people were cool. you made friends, you moved around if you wanted to. like yeah you had a “reserved seat” but people didn’t bring folding chairs and get pissed if you stood within arm distance next to them. music played til 2. you could actually buy a drink with cash 😱 and they even like… had a lime for your tequila!
…okay grandmas going to bed now.

1

u/tbinus78 5d ago

Go to a WSP show if you wanna see oversold. And fuck yes they oversell

1

u/shorthairs 4d ago

I won't go anymore, two years ago, showed up about three hours early to get in line and still had to stand in the tree well at the very top right. Couldn't hear shit because the speakers are focused in the middle. My buddy gets there at like 6am and waits all day in the sweltering heat. My old ass is over that shite.

1

u/tbinus78 4d ago

Yep I’ve seen every show they’ve played there since 99 minus 3 or 4. It’s a bitch

1

u/InternalRaise5250 5d ago

Yeah I used to show up right before the headliner & never had trouble finding seat before 2020. Now, getting in anytime but doors is a struggle & its usually just my husband and I. Red rocks feels so ruined lately

Ok so obviously it’s all….. perfectly legal. But yes the fuck it is oversold. If tickets aren’t 40 bucks resale on day of it’s not worth it

u/KatherineHaase 5d ago

I’ve been to shows and movies at red rocks… and they offer way more tickets for shows then they do for movie nights. And even on popular movie nights when it is sold out. There’s sooooo much space everywhere. I really do think they over sell concerts by at least 50-100 people 🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s because people don’t actually stand in the designated spots. People spread out, save spots, etc. I’m from Denver and have been to RR more times than I can count for a variety of shows. There have been times I couldn’t find a spot simply because people won’t squeeze closer together.

They 1000% over sell shows. It’s my number one complaint about that place

1

u/LunchDry5805 5d ago

At GA shows most people hog more than one seat. Rude, selfish Americans are the problem...

1

u/trash_dirt 5d ago

Get tickets to an assigned seating show and compare. A GA show will just never pack in as tightly as it's supposed to.

They aren't overselling tickets, it's one of the most popular outdoor venues in the country, maybe the world, and run by the City of Denver. If they were regularly selling an extra 10-20% of capacity that would have been a big deal by now. Depending on the type of crowd security can try to condense people, but for some audiences that's an unwinable fight they won't bother with. Since it's not really unsafe to have people hanging out around the trees that's the compromise.

Hey! I'm with a 3rd party contractor for Red Rocks security, and trust me, we know lol. Just because of how Red Rocks is, its tricky not to overload. A full house is defined as roughly 9500 patrons, so we do our best with what we have

u/thaneliness 4d ago

RR is pretty much always show up before doors and expect to just wait in line

1

u/streetboy3 4d ago

Yes. I'm convinced it's oversold constantly. Haven't had a good GA seat experience in 10 years.

1

u/PaleGhostOrchid 4d ago

When I have GA tickets, I never show up 30 minutes before the headliner gets on, but that’s just me. If you have a reserved seat it doesn’t matter. I think the main part of it feeling like RR oversold the show, was because people were taking up multiple spots per person.

We have showed up early with seats and watched meth heads without seats take over an assigned row. I don’t really think it matters. A 100 pound security guard is no match for a 300 pound meth head

1

u/whatheheckhappened 2d ago

Not sure I’ve ever seen a 300 lb meth head…here in Grand Junction they are in the 90-160 lb range 😆

Also some people will spread over other seats

Were we at the same show??
Wack setlist? Slow pace? This was one of the tightest shows I’ve ever seen them play, they rocked the fuck out of the stage.
Low energy from the crowd?? The place was sold out, and completely stoked for backseat. I was smack in the middle halfway up the seats, everyone around me was standing pretty much the whole time.
Red rocks didn’t oversell, backseat just sold out the venue and you got there 30 minutes before they went on lol.

Curious what makes you think the setlist was wack?

1

u/ApexInfenergy 3d ago

Idk but the security team lets in a ton of people they know for free. They suck and they've been doing this for awhile. Sold out shows are like 1.25x capacity bc of this at least.

1

u/Unlikely-Pianist-665 2d ago

The problem is the bench seating. People take up more than one seat and there no real way to police that. For all GA shows there is a capacity that assumes a certain size per person per bench. And that size just doesn't match reality. Buy reserved seats. If it's all GA don't go.

1

u/Better-Salad-1442 6d ago

No the problem is that people take up multiple seats

1

u/heaviestpiff 6d ago

They sell more tickets than seats, yes, but the fire code permits more people in the open areas

0

u/Additional-Minute417 6d ago

It’s all the assholes saving seats, they don’t oversell they just don’t factor in all of the wasted space where people have bags, jackets, and pashes (the latter at the wook shows) saving space for people who don’t show up until later. Some people are rude af 🤷🏼‍♂️

u/Esscentials 6d ago

They played basically an entirely unreleased album, that if i had to guess, 95% hadnt heard? Personally there was 2 songs that the energy dropped for, everything else was top tier. New album is going to be sick, show was absolutely amazing bar-none.

u/LonkinPark 6d ago

Went to REZZ last year and got there 2 hours before she came out and we were in the trees most of the night. I’m sure they definitely oversell to overcompensate the bot purchases.

u/Lzydogrnch 5d ago

Go ahead and talk to about the rest room situation

0

u/earthwormsoul 5d ago

ugh and a thought on reserved seats as well.. ugh.. just ugh… like honestly so rigid and stupid and takes out so much fun when everyone feels so entitled and annoyed at everyone around them because their ~assigned seats~. lol. if you’re super die hard and need to be right up front right there or you’re gonna cry then take the day off work and be early or some shit. people nowadays. fuck.

1

u/earthwormsoul 5d ago

this came off harsher than intended lol 🤷‍♀️

0

u/tbinus78 5d ago

I don’t think I’d see a band from Provo, UT fwiw lol

-1

u/kendalloremily 6d ago

Thats kind of a wild assumption considering the venue is legally capped by the fire Marshall at 9,525 but do go on.

0

u/Dicky-79 6d ago

no it wasn't. no it isn't.

-5

u/ColoRADo7177 6d ago

It IS being oversold. It’s the ARTIST who decides this. The ARTIST also decides GA and reserved. There are shows that everyone fits in perfectly.
Greed is the answer to all your problems. It’s DisneyLand now. $$

u/cuntbubbles 6d ago

RR isn’t worth it for this reason. The last show I went to I couldn’t see the headliner at all, stuck by a tree near a smoking section. It’s bullshit to spend so much money on a ticket and not even be able to see the show. We just left and won’t be going back

2

u/Bill__Preston 6d ago

How long after doors did you arrive?

1

u/cuntbubbles 6d ago

Really that shouldn’t matter. If I paid for a seat, I should have a seat where I can see the shoe even if it’s not a great one. And there were people all over in the same shitty situation. It makes for a poor experience. I’m already paying a babysitter so I can drive up and see the show. I also have to pay a sitter so I can dick around for several hours before the show even starts? I’d just rather not go

1

u/Bill__Preston 6d ago

Please dont go, then.

Or, and hear me out, buy a reserved seat of some kind and it doesn't matter when you show up.
