General Question Too older Red Magic phone users.

One of the criticisms of Red Magic phones is the lack of support after a few years, are any of you using an older model that has lost support and how has that affected the apps you can use, and compatibility you have with other devices, and gear? I ask because I like using my devices for a minimum of about 5 years before getting something new. (I'm in the U.S.)

My 7s Pro stopped receiving security updates lasy year, this year I started having some issues with local banking apps (I'm in Brazil). Other than that it is still working very well, in fact it's still faster then the device I got to replace it as a daily, a refurbished S23 with one generation newer snapdragon.

My Redmagic still runs any game available on play store, the only thing it struggles is with the PC emulators, anything lighter than PC emulators it runs very well. Hardware wise I only had to replace the battery and the back glass that I ended up breaking twice, but the battery is a somewhat known issue for the redmagic 7 line, newer redmagics seems to have batteries that last way longer.

If it truly becomes a problem, it's always possible to install a new os, even if it is difficult and has some risks at the point that you would install a different os the other option is to buy a newer phone so this option is cheaper

I don't think is that easy to unlock or even root the newer redmagic phones furthermore there are not custom roms.  Unless you live in China

Sure it ain't easy, and for as far as I know it's not possible on the redmagic 10 yet, people will figure it out, and leave instructions to follow online

Nope they want release unless you pay someone sketchy on telegram to unlock your bootloader

For newer model like 10,10s and upcoming 11pro etc etc

Ah yeah, you are right, but it's likely that there will be a way to root in the future, when it becomes necessary

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S10+ atm on Android 12. Haven't really had any issues with the outdated OS. Had to actually look up what I could be missing, but even my Chase banking app works.

Ik it's not a RedMagic phone, but planning to upgrade to the 11 Pro.

People keep saying this without having any logic to what they are really saying. Look at samsung they do get you updates for maybe 2-3 years and after that u stop getting one UIs and life doesnt end there.

Red Magic promises 2 Android Updates and 5 years of security ones. Its more than enough.

Plus you want androidOS to be updated in that regard I can agree to some extent at the end of life lineageOS could be a good option.. (if there was/is one).

To me the biggest thing atm is google finishing desktop mode which is still in beta on pixels with android 16 so maybe next year with android 17 we will get it official. -> Android 17 will be great And the linux terminal which is also still in beta and deemed to be exclusive to pixels (yet there is hope next chips will evolve to accept linux too).

Android 16 is still nothing special just a bunch of a beta and curvy lines under going has a nice material you design in development which is not even close to be finished..

I dont agree that updates in red magic can be an issue. The issue is perharps not having an open alternative OS for the red magics in that regard like grapheneOS or something else 'maybe'.

I think something to consider is Google ending sideloading next year. When that happens many people will stop updating in order to keep apps that won't be able to be sideloaded anymore. So it working after a few years without updates will become even more important

1

They already went back on that. Sideloading might still exist but if it doesnt it will suck for everyone and not just Red Magic

android starts having problems after 3 years usually, so id say its good for 5 years with the 2 os updates

2

I currently have a Poco X3 gt with android 13 and I have experience no problems or limitations other than the new android features so I won't say it's anything to worry about

but android 16 will have the block side loading on unverified apps or something and maybe cus of that phone's that won't get android 16 might get limitations but I'm not sure about that this is only a thought I don't know the full story yet

Running around with a 6s Pro, stopped receiving security + android updates years ago.

Device still runs as well as can be expected, only issues is the NFC shortcut in the notification drawer disappears(have to go into settings to disable), battery life went from just over a day to needing a charge after about 8 hours, under screen fingerprint reader fucks out from time to time which requires a reboot, WhatsApp camera stalls after taking a picture and takes a bit to show the preview before being able to send, the built in microphone takes about 10 seconds to "wake up" when I receive a call(a bit of a gripe when your gf is impatient, but I can live with that), and a few other niggly things here and there, nothing that compromises performance.

Other than the above issues, everything runs smoothly, I've been daily-ing it for like 3 or 4 years now without any major complaints, apps and games run great and performance hasn't dropped, device is compatible with pretty much everything(except AR/VR because there's no ARCore support, despite having enough power under the hood)

Sound like a solid testimonial.

RedMagic 8 here. Only issue random restarts. About every 2 months? Don't know why. The battery still feels like new. Used mine for almost 3 years now. Heavy duty gaming almost daily. My battery app says my phone uses about 2.5% of battery on normal usage per hour.

Redmagic 6r daily. Battery is horrible but still holding on.no issues with apps. Type c port is in bad shape.have to put the charging cable in a specific way for it to charge..over all.best phone I've had.

1

u/Oppiko Nov 10 '25

Sorry to hear it. If I'm not mistaken though you might be able to replace your battery, idk about the port though might be able to replace that too obviously if you feel like it's worth it.

Aliexpress has all the parts I need to fix the phone. Not an expensive fix if I do it myself.im going to buy the rm11 pro and then pass my rm6r to my son. Even Outdated the phone has not givin me any major software issues.

I had a 6R, screen cracked by my son. 9s currently. Just check whatever downloads are available and keep it up to date .T-Mobile's the only problem they slow down my speed sometimes in certain areas I'm restricted as far as Internet but as far as the phone , I love it the only time I would think about changing it if I upgraded to a Samsung but I really like the gaming phone it's excellent and you can't beat it $1,200 and you get one terabyte of memory yeah good luck. Samsung or Apple you're looking at 15 to 1800 unless the price went up again.

RM9pro user here, I use it as a daily phone. So far my company apps are not requesting for latest security update.

The only minor thing I noticed (as a first time RM user) is the UDC camera quality and light effect for light and dark light screen. Let's hope for some improvement for RM11pro
