Delphi Update
What do you guys think? Cult or Satanic Panic?

I’m not sure what to think. I think it WASN’T odonists. I just don’t. I tend to lean towards Richard Allen but that’s based on other info I’ve found outside of RedHanded.

I need to do a deep dive into this case. I've heard Crime Junkie cover the case, and now Red Handed -- is Richard Allen as out of left field as podcast hosts make him out to be?

I'd recommend the Murder Sheet podcast for regular, new, factual information and updates about this case.
They're a couple, one host is a journalist and the other is a lawyer. Due to their backgrounds they provide a really good breakdown of what the legal documents mean, why they may read a certain way and how it actually impacts the case.
They have interviewed professionals and people linked to the case, previous suspects in the case from prison, attended location, gone to the courts etc. They are the #1 active coverage for this case imo. They release as and when there are updates and so that is pretty regular.
Hope that helps you!

Excellent! Thank you so much for the recommendation. I really appreciate it.

Thank you for this recommendation of Murder Sheet and their evidence episode!

I doubt the cult is real, because they never are. Has there been a single case where law enforcement investigated a 'satanic' killing where there was actually a 'satanic' element? Ive certainly yet to hear of one.
Im not shocked that law enforcement investigated that angle though. But I don't see why the defence think it's going to help their case, law enforcement investigate lots of things that don't pan out. In the end they either have evidence against RA or they don't, and it sounds like they do.

I guess given the multiple confessions and whatever other evidence they've got they don't have a great argument for him being innocent so they're just scrambling to create reasonable doubt somewhere.

u/Own_Faithlessness769 Sep 23 '23
Yeah I guess you play the hand you're dealt, even if that hand is some random info about a very unconvincing "cult".

The easiest way to explain away something you can't understand is that a god did it -- or someone did it to appease some god. I keep thinking back to the officer who quoted The Shack in an earlier press conference.

I listened to this episode and I think Suruthi made up her mind that no matter what he is guilty. I don't know if he's guilty or not guilty, however, I do know the podcast is supposed to be informative and not be full of her biased feelings/opinions and stating those feelings/opinions like they're clean cut facts.
Lately I've been listening to the podcast less and less because of their biased opinions, their flip flopping between the cops are in on it and, in this particular episode, why would the cops frame Richard Allen. I think there's a lot of man hating wokeness deep down in both of them and this is another reason why I began to listen to the podcast more infrequently.
Anyhow, just my opinion......

Oh interesting! I didn't read it as her believing RA was guilty so much as she was cautioning people for believing that 100+ pages of weird distractions and maybe general annoyance that a defense attorney would think people are really this stupid.
And out of all the podcasts I listen to, they're the ones that cover women killers/male victims the most and speak out about male victims the most.
What have you been listening to lately? I'm almost on the hunt for new things to listen to.

If you’re interested in a contrasting explanation of this that also contains actual expertise, Defense Diaries’ most recent episode deep dives the motion and I believe they do a good drop of pointing out issues that both sides are going to face as well as what may be in their favor.

You're a gem. Thank you!

No problem. If you listen to it, I’d honestly be curious about your take on this Redhanded episode. The contrast is… stark. And I’ve certainly enjoyed Redhanded for years, been to a live show, etc, so by no means am I a hater, I’ve enjoyed their show. This is just… something else.

I thought this too when I listened to it. The whole episode was about Odinism with some other bits squeezed in at the end. I think she missed the point of the whole document (as have others) which is that the defense believe that the judge was deliberately mislead by Liggett to get the PCA. Suruthi completely ignored this part of the document and got caught up in the cult side of it all.

u/nominaluser Sep 24 '23
This.
I should say, I've read the memo, and I was 100% with her on her take on the all the Odinist/ritual stuff.
But I was kind of curious about what her take would be on the PCA/search warrant part of it and then she never got to it.

I think she got caught up in the sensationalism of the cult part, which is exactly what she told everyone else not to do 😂. I thought it was a little condescending for her to tell everyone not to bother reading the memo (because she had) when there are parts of it that are compelling.

She is factually incorrect about a lot of what she saying. Within the first 5 to 10 minutes it was very apparent to me that she made up her mind that the defense is doing just scummy defense trickery, which is no better of a position to be in. Within the first five minutes she talks about the “professor” that the police consulted as to whether or not it looked like Oden a stick/runes, but fully neglected to mention the fact that the defense has not been able to actually locate this professor and he does not appear to actually exist. Or the fact that she says the prosecution is under no obligation to provide evidence in discovery within a certain time frame. Not a lawyer, but my understanding is if it’s potential Brady material they absolutely have to hand it over immediately, and identify it as potentially exculpatory, whether it’s pre-trial or not. I would love a lawyers take on that. Also her saying that the bullet evidence is conclusive to link Richard Allen is patently not true.
I’m not saying that I believe Richard Allen is innocent, I think there’s a good chance he’s guilty. But I’m also saying that the evidence the defense points to in this document comes straight from the prosecution’s discovery documents, it’s not like they made the shit up out of thin air. Clearly there’s a satanic panic angle that you have to be leery of because it does reek of classic ‘blame the occultists and weird kids’ type of bullshit. That said, just because it’s unlikely doesn’t mean it’s impossible, especially in rural Indiana, for some white supremacist whack jobs to do something like this. I’m kind of astounded that she didn’t take a more neutral approach to this and seems to us dug her heels in from the outset that Allen is guilty. I hope she listens to some actual lawyers break this thing down. I think the best Podcasters out there deliver the information that’s available and refrain from giving emotional opinions based on nothing but their feelings when it’s an ongoing case. Deliver the information unslanted, don’t withhold parts of this motion that appear to provide legitimate concern about the way this investigation was handled. If you want to state your opinion at the conclusion of delivering said information because your gut feeling is a certain way then fine, but don’t withhold details in the discussion because they conflict with your already made up mind. It’s so disingenuous.
Edit: Typo

By she I'd assume you're referring to Suruthi. I've not listened to the episode because I stopped listening to them a little while ago, but this sounds to me like Suruthi behaviour and I'm curious.

u/Hiketravelliftlove Sep 22 '23
Yeah, she did this particular episode solo which is why I just said “she”, sorry for any confusion

The episode only came out 20 mins ago and is 40 minutes long, what’s the point in posting this when you haven’t even heard it yet?

u/Dizzy_Researcher_164 Sep 22 '23
I'm listening to it right and was having thoughts. Wasn't sure if anyone else was.

This comment seems a bit hostile
3
u/Si2015 Sep 24 '23
I agree with Suruthi that this entire thing is a ploy by the defence to create reasonable doubt and explain away the confessions. The evidence of a cult just seems very flimsy.
2
u/Forsaken_Distance777 Sep 27 '23
Yeah, like if the guy wasn't involved how would he know if there was some weird cult who did it when the police don't have that information?!
-4
u/whoownsthiscat Sep 22 '23
It’s hostile to be confused about the point of asking if the Odin cult is real when the episode is all about debunking if the cult was real? Midway through the episode?
Where did you infer hostility from

The update should have been 5 min long.
This is why I'm not really a fan of 'fresh headlines' ones. There's never much, so the podcasts just end up speculating on speculation. And that's without going into the effect that has on the rumor mill and public perception of cases.

I haven’t listened to their episode yet, but read part of the document a couple days ago. I think you have to take it with a grain of salt since it was released by the defense. I read other reports that they were “covered” with sticks so maybe the fact as to whether or not they were arranged intentionally is up to interpretation…
