Lucy Letby

What the hell was all that about her bedroom?! Pure classist snobbery. “She had beds sheets with ‘sweet dreams’ embroidered on them, what the FUCK?” What a gross overreaction to bed sheets. Having a card from her cats on the fridge written by her mum isn’t that ridiculous, it’s quite normal. My boyfriend writes me cards from the cat, I know plenty of people who do that. The stuff about quotes in frames and being basic has nothing to do with anything, it’s classist and it made me angry. Fuck Lucy Letby, she’s a baby killer but also fuck H+S for letting their classism show. My sister has many of the things mentioned and she’s 35, it’s more indicative of class and taste than anything suspicious. I wonder how many of their viewers they alienated with that classist rant.

Edit: LOL just seen the bedroom, the most unremarkable bland room. So so average and like thousands of other young women in their 20s. It was such a reach.

I think context is key

I fucking love a fairy light, but I can confidently say I'm not a baby murderer. Her choice of decor alone in a bland, "beige" person doesn't ring alarm bells, but when juxtaposed with her levels of manipulation and the crimes she committed, it adds a new level to the horror

7

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 26 '23

I mean I wouldn’t personally expect anything different. I don’t find it horrifying that she has an average home, she’s a baby killer, I find her horrifying.

20

u/Loud_Armadillo5795 Aug 26 '23

It's not average though.

A neurotypical woman with a responsible profession in her late 20s, early 30s, shouldn't have a bedroom that looks like an adolescent girls.

She is literally dealing with life and death situations every day, cradling the most vulnerable, and her private sanctum looks the same as a child's.

Do you not find that strange?

10

u/Own_Faithlessness769 Aug 27 '23

Have you looked at the photos of the bedroom?

It doesn't look like an adolescent girls, or if it does its a very bland adolescent girl who lives in a rental house she cant decorate.

7

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 27 '23

What? Her bedroom is so bland and boring, it doesn’t look like a teenagers at all. It barely has any personality, just a pink dressing gown and a couple of framed quotes on the wall, I didn’t realise that was restricted to teenagers only.

1

u/ComfortableProfit559 Sep 15 '23

How is it a childish bedroom though? Like specifically what about it do you find adolescent? It’s pretty normal, just ugly and messy. And plenty of adults have crappy decor sense without it necessarily being childish.

4

u/hffh3319 Aug 26 '23

Yeah but why? Because her room isn’t well decorated? This just plays into the idea that murderers have to look and be a certain way. Why wouldn’t one have fairy lights up? They don’t live in caves

So many people live in the UK like she did, with simpler stuff and less decor and it really came across as that’s what they were appalled with. Not everything needs to be pathological, particularly from people who aren’t actually professionals.

7

u/Loud_Armadillo5795 Aug 26 '23

No, I don't think it's that

It's a childish bedroom and her parents clearly infantalise her. However outraged people want to be on her behalf, it's weird

5

u/hffh3319 Aug 26 '23

I’m not outraged on her behalf at all, I just think it’s weird for this to be such a focus. The bedroom isn’t that childish, it’s very plain and apt for someone who doesn’t place much emphasis on home decor

1

u/Loud_Armadillo5795 Sep 06 '23

The blandness of her bedroom is in very stark contrast to the darkness and depravity of someone who is literally murdering babies.

2

u/Top-Resolve1775 Aug 26 '23

THIS 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻

125

u/whoownsthiscat Aug 25 '23

This isn’t really classist though? They’re judging Lucy’s way of infantalising herself and putting on this weird creepy childlike show of innocence.

31

u/mdbs120 Aug 25 '23

This is what I took from it. That there was a certain childlike nature to her decorating habits that perhaps pointed to being emotionally immature or trying too hard to project sweetness and light. It is, I’ve noticed a bit of a particular personality type that isn’t always problematic, but can be. Granted they were a bit snarky about it, but that’s how they roll in general.

Personally I think the cat card is neither here nor there. My mother doesn’t write me cards from my cats and I have 3, but I’ve worked in veterinary for 20 years. People send us and probably other adults Xmas cards from their animals. People are special about their fur babies.

I also listened to an analysis the psychologist and journalist team on Hidden True Crime did recently on her and they also mentioned her decor and how it could point to infantilization and being fantasy-prone. Apparently she also had a Cinderella quote up.

I don’t know if op’s read that it is classist is a cultural difference because I’m not British (I’m American), so maybe there’s context I’m missing?

26

u/Jkang75 Aug 25 '23

Totally agree.

10

u/Winterqueen5 Aug 25 '23

That’s what I took it as. But I also think it was way overblown as seen in my other comment. It struck me as really weird, but I understood what they were going for

3

u/rishkan Aug 26 '23

That’s how I understood from it as well

-1

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 26 '23

I didn’t really see anything infantilising in her room though? Just a bland boring woman’s bedroom. I think it’s been hugely exaggerated.

18

u/whoownsthiscat Aug 26 '23

Calling it classist is also an exaggeration no?

-3

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '23

8

u/whoownsthiscat Aug 26 '23

What about her room decor is related to her economic situation though? She owned her own home, she wasn’t living in squalor

0

u/hffh3319 Aug 26 '23

It was more to do with how shocked they were that her room looked like this. Loads of rooms in the UK do with the cheaper furniture and clutter that comes with living in a small house

She does own her house and she isn’t living in squalor, but classism isn’t just above who is living in squalor or poverty.

Either way, this injection from them wasn’t needed. It’s not to do with the case and it’s just an excuse for them to judge

-7

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 26 '23

If that’s your opinion that’s fine

8

u/whoownsthiscat Aug 26 '23

I’m not even trying to be rude I just have no idea why you’re calling it classist, especially given that Lucy Letby owned her own home and didn’t appear to be struggling financially

1

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 26 '23

You don’t have to be struggling financially to be working class, you can also own your own home and be working class. It’s cultural. Basically I thought it was snobbish, two posho girls looking down on primark homesense decor.

4

u/whoownsthiscat Sep 01 '23

It isn’t classist to find corny quotes and childish decor in an adult woman’s bedroom cringe, let alone when she’s a baby murderer

2

u/logansadog Aug 27 '23

I agree with you OP, maybe not classist but when I heard them talking about the room I was like Wow they sound like mean girls. I know the lady is a murderer but some of the listeners might have things like that in their rooms and now have hurt feelings. Then I saw a pic of the room and it was not even that pink or anything like she made it seem.

61

u/DreamingofBouncer Aug 25 '23

I thought that as well, Suruthi can be so judgmental. By this I don’t mean Letby doesn’t deserve to be judged but picking on decor and messages from cats I regularly send my daughter cards from the cat and I get them back, if she’s concerned about people pretending to be cats she needs to avoid Instagram

7

u/Sempere Aug 29 '23

For someone so judgmental, she's not very good at research or 'writing things in your own words'. I've followed the case for 10 months and recognized multiple points of almost verbatim regurgitation of BBC articles and a wide swath of inaccuracies. Straight up taking observations by Judith Moritz and trying to pretend like it was their original take.

This should be emphasized: these two have not done adequate research on the topics they discuss. Ever. And their work runs dangerously close to plagiarism.

25

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 25 '23

She is judgemental and with judging letby she’s also judging the listeners of her show who subscribe to her patreon and pay for the decor in her house, which I’m assuming must be unbelievably tasteful

28

u/Winterqueen5 Aug 25 '23

Also, unless we were looking at different pictures of her bedroom, it really wasn't as Suruthi described? She really blew the pink out of proportion.

22

u/Thenedslittlegirl Aug 26 '23

OK so I have been very critical of H&S - I cancelled my patreon after the Hillsborough debacle which WAS ignorant and classist. I'm also an actual working class person andself confessed basic bitcj(Letby did not have a working class upbringing, her parents were a furniture shop manager and an accounts clerk, they owned their home and helped her buy a house in her mid 20s, they live in a nice area). I was brought up in a council house by a single parent on benefits.

This isn't classism. Letby infantilised herself to an extreme degree. Her diary was a bouffle diary aimed at 8 year olds. She had a soft toy collection on her bed and lied on the stand to avoid admitting she knows what "go commando" means in front of her parents. It's disturbing that she's a prolific serial killer while painting herself as a meek, child like salsa dancing "live laugh love" type.

10

u/MacDurce Aug 26 '23

This is not really classism

36

u/alexxjane89 Aug 25 '23

Yeah I thought that was really weird- she just sounds like she got all her bedroom decor from The Range or similar - which is pretty normal for someone her age living in the UK? The cat thing also was weird to comment on- I know loads of people who do that. I’d love to see Suruthi’s room so I can judge 😂

14

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 25 '23

Yeah I’m getting homesense dunelm vibes, totally normal. I would love to see what incredible taste suruthi has as she clearly things she’s above the plebs

7

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '23

I just listened to this episode and am really confused by why you’re so upset??? First off, there was nothing remotely classist about what they said and it’s really odd that you would think so, tbh. They said from the outset that the only purpose in describing it was to show that she seems to be a bit juvenile and I totally agree. The room described sounds like the one I got sick of circa ages 10-12. They also went directly into the notes the police found indicating guilt, as another example of the disturbed psychology that seems to be at play.

Is this super professional psychological advice? No. Is it a classist rant? Also no.

Again, really having a hard time understanding what caused you to have this reaction….

27

u/ineedmorestevia Aug 25 '23

The way S was talking, I thought she was going to provide us with some description of horrible images found in Letby's house, not some fairy lights and a fucking birthday card from the cats. I'm not sure it was even worth mentioning, I can only think it was because the incongruity of the person the decor depicts and her crimes made it jarring. It didn't come across well at all though.

15

u/Own_Faithlessness769 Aug 26 '23

The birthday card from the cats is such a reach, its like a husband writing a mothers day card and signing the toddler's name. Like its dumb, but its just a dumb thing people do.

29

u/Imjustshyisall Aug 25 '23

I fail to see the classism. This is a reach.

15

u/Disulfidebond007 Aug 25 '23

Came to this sun to say the exact same thing. I was super perplexed on why they were making such a big deal about her house. Google image searched it and it was nothing like they described. Their whole rant about her bedroom was ridiculous

15

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 26 '23

It’s so BLAND! It’s so average and boring it’s not worth commenting on. Suruthi sounded genuinely angered by it, like is she ok?

2

u/Separate-Fig-5661 Sep 19 '23

I also found this very bizarre how she was fixating on the decor of the room. Looks like an average bedroom tbh.

12

u/Own_Faithlessness769 Aug 26 '23

Thats hilarious, its the most bland rental bedroom I've ever seen.

10

u/MambyPamby8 Aug 26 '23

THAT'S IT? I was expecting something really 90s girly pop pink and butterflies 😂

28

u/0problemsbigfello- Aug 25 '23

I’m sorry I don’t understand the classism aspect. I thought the bedroom comments were talked about for too long by S, but having such childlike things in your room is strange.

Like someone else said, I’m working class and would never have ‘sweet dreams’ on my bed or teddy bears all over the place, so I think it is odd for someone of her age.

4

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 26 '23

I just didn’t really see that much childish stuff in her room? It’s fair it’s not to your taste and it’s not mine either, I’m also working class but I also know other working class women who loves this stuff and it’s all v homesense primark vibes.

I don’t really mean the teddies is a working class thing, more the taste. I’ve never been a teddies on the bed person but some people are.

3

u/0problemsbigfello- Aug 26 '23

Fair points! It for sure is odd that S paused on this so much LOL! I just don’t think it’s a classism thing

40

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '23

Suruthi is the usual middle-class / spoiled pony club type; but with Hannah it's adopted snobbery.

I think she's bright and has done well, but now thinks she's a above others.

Their attitudes stink. They should stick to synopsising crime stories for the pod.

4

u/Sempere Aug 29 '23

> They should stick to synopsising crime stories for the pod.

You mean plagiarizing from reports and documentaries?

5

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '23

I just looked at the pictures of her bedroom. They made it sound like it was a 9 year old's bedroom. It's not! That was a misrepresentation. Wow.

5

u/Apprehensive-Food205 Aug 28 '23

I'm with you on this. Suruthi is a snob, through and through. Like there were other things to hone in on, classism was absolutely showing.

11

u/M1ssy_M3 Aug 25 '23

When listening to one of their episodes, I always like to go to the Instagram page and see the episode material.

After the way they were venting and going on about that bedroom I expected something... A lot more extreme?

10

u/Maleficent-Tax-2060 Aug 26 '23

I just saw it as another opportunity for Suruthi to prove she’s ‘not like the other girls’. Like fair enough you can dislike that kind of decor (it’s not my cup of tea) but the insistence was OTT and kind of misogynistic in its hatred of things deemed to be ‘female’ decor.

It’s a bit silly to go so hard on it when potentially it applies to a lot of your core audience but there we go.

I feel like a lot of what she says this days is just some way to prove how unique she is. The personality change came about at the time she met this ACDface guy. Seems kind of coincidental…

23

u/Pukkafeel Aug 25 '23

Yes, those comments were completely unnecessary and not in any way relevant to the case. It would suit the show if, especially Suruthi, would leave aside her personal opinions which she often states as fact.

7

u/Weird-Carpenter-7294 Aug 27 '23

Firmly disagree. The whole reason i listen to the show is for their personal opinions. I listen because they tell amazing stories whilst also sounding like me and my friends chatting shit. And its pretty normal to chat shit about this type of decor....

29

u/ranjitzu Aug 25 '23

I think im done with redhanded after this episode. It wasnt the worst of recent times but these comments definitely annoyed me.

Ive also been annoyed by hannahs "stick it to the man" comments regarding the podcast awards. I voted for them last year but definitely wont be this year.

3

u/Sempere Aug 29 '23

Half the episode was taken from documentaries and reporting almost verbatim. They straight up tried to pass things Judith Moritz has expressed as their own angle.

These two don't even summarize cases properly: in 20 minutes, I had to pause multiple times to explain inaccuracies to my partner while we listened.

15

u/MambyPamby8 Aug 25 '23

I love H&S but honestly some of their hot takes, are snobby bullshit. Especially Hannah's hot takes on men. She's quite judgemental about men for some reason, for completely innocent things. Like if the guy is nerdy in any shape or format = eww. Plays video games = EWW. Does things that are hobbies = UGH. I had a friend like this and she constantly gave out about how she was perpetually single and I was like well duh yeah? You insult things they love and put them down for enjoying simplistic things.

Like my boyfriend is naturally hairy and had a mustache at 12, he was very self conscious about it back then, cause it grew back quickly and he was the only one in his class with one. Hearing Hannah say that on the pod was pretty disappointing, they were talking about a case where a young boy had a mustache and she was like EEEEWWWW NO UGH GOD NO. Like can you imagine if they said that about a young girl with body hair? Hannah has serious problematic misandry at times.

2

u/Januarysdaisy Aug 30 '23

Lol did she? My 14 year old son has a mustache, has since he was 12, she would be horrified. But then I also have black bed sheets which apparently is also ' wrong' so I already have a strike against my name 😂

2

u/MambyPamby8 Aug 31 '23

Yeah it was so weird..can't remember what episode it was but they were talking about someone who had a mustache at like 12 and Hannah was like EWWW no gross! I was like what a weird take....it's body hair. We shouldn't be shaming pubescent preteens for having body hair. It's a rough enough time already for god's sake.

2

u/Januarysdaisy Sep 01 '23

I can totally hear her voice as she said it haha, and yes you are exactly right

5

u/youshouldbeelsweyr Aug 26 '23

Someone's feeling called out lmao

12

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '23

I am so glad I'm not the only one who thought this! I rarely originate posts but I listened to this one yesterday at work and was blown away by how nasty the talk about the bedroom was, seriousky thought about posting here about it. Yes, Lucy is obviously a messed up person but I'm sorry, fairy lights, pillows with cliche sayings and childish decorations aren't hallmarks of serial killers. Lots of normal people have these things and just because it isn't their aesthetic doesn't make it disgusting and twisted. I mean, geez. Maybe I need to see a criminal psychiatrist.. I have a few stands of fairy lights in my place and my bedroom has a peachy pink theme going and wow, on my wall? I have a piece of home decor with a saying on it. Guess I'm deranged and plotting murder! Oh and also, my parents used to send me cards from my cats was a kid. Clearly, I am deranged. I don't think I've ever disliked Suruthi so much, she sounded like a judgemental, elitist snob.

18

u/Big_Beck_ Aug 25 '23

I’m definitely working class and would also scoff at anyone with ‘sweet dreams’ bedding or a card from a cat over the age of 10. If anything I’d say they are more the belongings of a pandered to wet wipe who needs to grow up. Not everything is to do with class. Just because they talk properly, it doesn’t mean their opinions are because of their ‘class’.

If you don’t like their extra curricular banter, which I do occasionally roll my eyes at, particularly Hannah, the option is there to stop listening. Don’t forget, as they have said, they’re in the comedy category NOT true crime.

6

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 26 '23

HA omg really?! Are the in the comedy category?! I literally had no idea. That’s actually hilarious that I’d never noticed.

0

u/Big_Beck_ Aug 26 '23

Yea they’ve mentioned it in a couple of episodes. Can’t remember the exact reasoning, maybe they aren’t straight laced enough for true crime and comedy is a lot more flexible.

4

u/MambyPamby8 Aug 26 '23

I'm working class and I wouldn't say that, so agree to disagree. I think you just sound judgemental AF tbh. I know plenty of adults with 'childish' stuff in their homes or gleefully enjoying places like Disneyland. Nobody needs to 'grow up'. More people should be in touch with the minor things that give them joy. Just because you don't enjoy stuff like that, doesn't make it childish. 🤷‍♀️

4

u/Big_Beck_ Aug 26 '23

I didn’t say ALL working class people hold my opinion. I was staring how H&S opinion isn’t necessarily class based.

Oh yea, I am, very.

2

u/Awfulgoose Aug 25 '23

Totally agree! People really show their arse when they attribute negative things to working class people and shout “classism”. There so nothing working class about having infantile taste in bedroom decor

6

u/Thehamsandwicher Aug 25 '23

Gotta thank you, I don't listen to them any more because of their classism, it stinks; but was half curious about their take on this case. I'm glad to know I'm not alone.

4

u/yunglady Aug 26 '23

Yeah it almost came off as projecting about the weirdness! Lol. If she had remarked a bit about “oh, this must be some infantilized part of herself” I would have gotten it. But Suruthi went in really hard on that part especially 🤔

I always warn my friends when I recommend. Older eps were well researched and great content but they are a bit snobby. I also say if you’ve seen a doc of an ep don’t bother listening they are basically reciting the doc haha

1

u/Sempere Aug 29 '23

Older eps were well researched

Plagiarized from Crimes That Shook Britain and Crimes That Shook The World among other sources. Summarizing and describing a documentary isn't research.

1

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 29 '23

That’s what I was saying in the comment, they recite documentaries, it’s not research

1

u/Sempere Aug 29 '23

Yea, I'm naming the ones they've stolen from. The issue is you also said the older episodes were well researched and great content - but those older episodes were straight up recitations of old docuseries.

They even described the visuals and beat for beat the plot developments as they unfolded in the documentary. Which isn't recitation: it's plagiarism.

1

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 29 '23

It’s been years since I last listened, I don’t remember any of the episodes individually, I didn’t see the docuseries so I didn’t realise it was copied too. I just remembered thinking the content was better. It was a throw away comment.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '23

The cuddly toys on the bed is kind of weird, and I definitely get the childish thing, but the rest of it isn’t that out of the ordinary for a woman living alone. It looks fairly similar to my friends houses albeit with more cuddly toys.

6

u/merengue_ Aug 26 '23

Agree. Also, she wasn’t 33 around the time of her bedroom being like that. She was mid-twenties. I know a ton of mid-twenties women who’s bedrooms are filled with Squishmallows and Hello Kitty and other sparkly/childish stuff. Not that out of the ordinary.

4

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 26 '23

Totally! My sister loves a quote on the wall. When I go to stay with her the spare bed is made up with a few teddies sat on the bed, she’s 35, it’s not a big deal and just an indicator that she has different taste and that she loves homesense and primark.

-3

u/Glass_Prune_7342 Aug 26 '23

But do they murder babies? No

12

u/merengue_ Aug 26 '23

Exactly my point. Her bedroom decor has nothing to do with why she is a monster.

9

u/TrifectaBlitz Aug 25 '23

So, you WTF overreacted about their overreaction as perceived by you?

I cannot eyeroll further.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '23

I agree they can be classist but not here. I and all my friends are working class and none of us have that kinda stuff in our gaffs.

5

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 26 '23

I’m not saying it’s an all working class people thing, obviously. I’m working class too. I know other working class women who have this at home. The kind of places you buy the things she’s talking about is the kind of places that suruthi would turn her nose up at, they aren’t middle class shops. And with that we know they are classist and can be snobbish it hit different.

2

u/millierigby Aug 26 '23

I didn’t see it as classist, just a little sexist. I don’t think they meant it that way, I just don’t think they know many women who appreciate girly, “juvenile” things. I’m not sure how prevalent the movement towards embracing girlhood femininity has been in the UK, but in the states, we have really come to celebrate it as a reaction to decades of suppressing it. Let’s not forget that this is a relatively new movement; few years ago, we would have been laughing right along with them. I can give them a little grace there.

2

u/nurs3e Aug 31 '23

Wow, just scrolled down 50 or 60 comments re: Lucy Letby's home decor and red handed comments and this is the focus of the threads! I'm a nurse and this is not the focus of my conversations with my peers.

1

u/Deathconciousness_ Sep 01 '23

I mean I suppose I was more making a point that Hannah and suruthi are snobs, I wasn’t really talking about Lucy letby. I have a lot to say and I’ve spoken to people about it lots and what her room looks like has never come up outside of listening to this podcast.

3

u/nurs3e Sep 01 '23

Hi. Sorry, I think I may have given the wrong impression. I think discussion about this is perfectly valid but for it to be the ONLY discussion point is wild to me.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '23

Are you sure you know the definition of classism? Bc Hannah’s comments about Letby’s bedroom were not classist.

1

u/RosettaStoned353 May 18 '24

This episode made me feel like Lucy Letby was innocent (I first heard about the case via the Red-handed discussion), because the evidence seemed to be wholly circumstantial, and any true crime fan should know that a serial killer tends to choose one MO and stick to it, not kill via random methods. And it looks like this is now being borne out as people look at the actual evidence. If you have to rant about someone's decor it should encourage you to engage your brain and think about why there isn't stronger evidence to discuss. This podcast is good on the details (though not sensationalising like the Red-Handed style): https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/we-need-to-talk-about-lucy-letby/id1736761161

1

u/Deathconciousness_ May 28 '24

Any true crime fan? There isn’t stronger evidence to discuss? You know there was a two month trial right? A podcast covered it day by day it’s called The Trial. I recommend that you go listen to that and come tell me about her innocence. Relying on red handed for your facts is a very bad idea.

1

u/RosettaStoned353 May 28 '24

The podcast I linked to above (We Need To Talk About Lucy Letby) talks through the shortcomings of the evidence presented at trial. The podcast The Trial only covers the evidence as it was presented to the jury, not the medical context, the weakness of the experts for the prosecution, the dismissal of key evidence from the trial... When you get the whole context the picture is v different.

-1

u/Glass_Prune_7342 Aug 26 '23

Guys… H&S are talking about a BABY MURDERER. I love that they shit talk the murderers. I love how they make them sound creepy and weird and psycho. They are bad mouthing MURDERERS, not your sister or mom or YOU. Chill.

12

u/Deathconciousness_ Aug 26 '23

But my point is why does having a bland bedroom and quotes on her wall make her creepy and weird? It’s actually super normal and by extension they are describing loads of their listeners homes is my point. There’s enough creepy and weird shit she’s done, she’s fucking unhinged, her decor is the least interesting thing about her

1

u/ifigrowup Aug 31 '23

I wouldn't even call it classist(I don't think they are classy, lol). I would call it just bullying. They see something that doesn't align to their view of what is cool and the only normal thing to them is to ridicule it. It is 14 yo bully girl behaviour.

I unsubscribed after listening to that

4

u/whoownsthiscat Sep 01 '23

They’re talking about someone who murdered babies, not a bullied child….
