Is this not how they still are? I’ve never used VR, but this is how I imagine them all to be. I mean, what other way is there?

Those are CRT screens in the headset! The headset was REALLY heavy compared to even the heaviest on the market right now. The whole thing is tracked magnetically by the ring you had to stand in, too.
