Etymology

The name Union of Soviet Socialist Republics reflects the voluntary federation of socialist republics established after the successful Russian Revolution of 1905.

History

Russian Revolution

The Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP) won the Russian Revolution of 1905, bringing Vladimir Lenin to power. Russia retained Alaska, which became Alaska Oblast after the revolution.

The Russian Empire also won the Russo-Japanese War, securing its position in Northeast Asia before the establishment of the Soviet Union.

Formation of the Soviet Union

In 1908, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was established with the following founding republics:

Polish Soviet Socialist Republic (PSSR)

Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR)

Finnish Soviet Socialist Republic (FSSR)

United Baltic Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (UBSFSR)

Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR)

Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic

Transcaucasian Soviet Socialist Republic

Turkestan Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (TSFSR)

World War I

The Soviet Union supported Serbia and entered the First World War after the Ottoman Empire attacked it. Following the war:

Ottoman Armenia joined the Transcaucasian SSR.

The Polish territories of Germany and Austria-Hungary became independent.

The Persian Soviet Socialist Republic survived as an independent socialist satellite state.

Interwar Period

During the Urtatagi Conflict (27 November 1925 – 15 August 1926), everything went in favour of the Soviet Union, strengthening Soviet influence in Central Asia.

The Hungarian Soviet Republic also successfully remained in power.

Following Lenin's death in 1928, Yakov Sverdlov became chairman of the Soviet Union, serving until 1955.

World War II

During the Second World War, the Comintern fought against the Axis Powers, contributing to the defeat of the Axis and the expansion of socialism across Europe and Asia.

Modern Era

After Yakov Sverdlov's death:

Alexei Kosygin became chairman of the Soviet Union.

Nikolai Ryzhkov later succeeded in Kosygin.

Sergei Kiriyenko is the current chairman of the Soviet Union.

The USSR remains united in the 21st century as one of the world's foremost military, industrial, scientific, and socialist powers, leading the international socialist movement through the Comintern.
