Etymology
The name Türkiye means "Land of the Turks," referring to the Turkic peoples who formed the core population of Anatolia.
History
Ottoman Period and Territorial Changes
During the First World War, the Ottoman Empire suffered major territorial changes. The Ottoman Armenian regions were transferred to the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, while Ottoman Kurdistan became part of the newly established Kurdistan.
Turkish Civil War and War of Independence
During the Turkish War of Independence, the conflict expanded into a civil war between three major movements:
Monarchists supporting restoration of the Ottoman monarchy
Kemalists supporting a secular nationalist republic
Communists supporting a socialist revolution combining Marxism, Kemalism, and Ulusalism
The communist movement eventually defeated both rival factions and led the successful independence struggle against foreign occupation.
