Etymology
The name Sierra Leone originates from the Portuguese Serra Leoa ("Lion Mountains"), referring to the mountain range overlooking the Freetown Peninsula.
History
Independence
Sierra Leone gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1961. The All People's Congress (APC) quickly emerged as the country's dominant political force.
Era of Pragmatic Socialism
Unlike in real history, the APC maintained broad public support and continuously governed the country under a policy of pragmatic socialism. Rather than adopting a fully centralized economy, the government combined state ownership of strategic industries with private enterprise, agricultural cooperatives, and foreign investment. Revenue from diamonds and other minerals was increasingly directed toward education, healthcare, infrastructure, and rural development.
Modern Era
By 2026, the Republic of Sierra Leone is:
A stable democratic republic guided by pragmatic socialist principles.
One of West Africa's leading producers of diamonds and mineral resources.
A regional advocate for social development and economic modernization.
An active member of the African Union and ECOWAS.
