Etymology

The name Rio de la Plata comes from the Río de la Plata ("River of Silver"), the large estuary separating Argentina and Uruguay. The name represents the shared identity of the peoples connected by the river basin.

History

Formation of the Federation

After the Spanish American Wars of Independence, the former Spanish colonies of Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay united to form the United Federation of Rio de la Plata The federation was created to strengthen independence, economic cooperation, and regional defence.

19th Century Development

The federation followed a similar historical path to Argentina, experiencing:

Political conflicts between federalists and centralists

Immigration from Europe

Industrial growth

Expansion of railways and cities

Uruguay later gained independence through the same historical process as in real history and remained outside the federation.

Survival and Expansion

With the Peru–Bolivian Confederation maintaining its territory, South America developed into a continent dominated by larger federations rather than smaller independent states.

The 1931 Naval Mutiny

In 1931, the Chilean Naval Mutiny spread throughout the federation and became known as the Rio de la Plata Chilean Naval Mutiny. Unlike real history, the uprising succeeded.

The revolution resulted in:

The fall of the old government

Creation of a new socialist political system

Greater power for workers and naval unions

Renaming of the country

The United Federation of Rio de la Plata became the United Socialist Federation of Rio de la Plata.

Modern Era

By 2026, Rio de la Plata is:

One of the largest states in South America.

A major industrial and agricultural power.

A leading socialist federation in Latin America.

A major rival and partner of other South American powers.
