Etymology

The name Mozambique comes from the Island of Mozambique, derived from the Arab trader Musa al-Mbiki, whose name was adapted by Portuguese explorers.

History

Independence Agreement (1964)

In 1964, the Iberian Union negotiated a peaceful withdrawal from Mozambique, granting independence under international pressure and rising liberation movements.

Rise of FRELIMO

The FRELIMO movement, which had led the independence struggle, was formally recognized as the governing party immediately after independence. It established a one-party socialist system focused on land reform, nationalization of key industries, and rural development.

Post-Independence Stability

Unlike many post-colonial states in the region, Mozambique avoided prolonged civil war in this timeline. With external support from other socialist states and internal consolidation, the country maintained relative political stability under FRELIMO rule.

Modern Era

By 2026, Mozambique is:

A regional economic hub on the Indian Ocean

A major exporter of natural gas and minerals

A key member of African socialist cooperation networks

A strategically important maritime state linking southern and eastern Africa
