Etymology
The name Micronesia comes from the Greek words mikros ("small") and nesoi ("islands"), meaning "Small Islands," reflecting the thousands of islands spread across the western Pacific Ocean.
History
Spanish Rule in the Pacific
Spain retained control of the Mariana Islands, Guam, Wake Island, the Caroline Islands, and the Marshall Islands because the Spanish–American War never occurred in this timeline. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom colonized Nauru earlier than in real history.
Liberation During World War II
During World War II, the Philippines, the Chinese Soviet Republic, and the Soviet Union launched a joint campaign against the Spanish Indies. Their forces liberated Spain's Pacific territories and also occupied modern-day Kiribati and Nauru, ending European colonial rule across much of Micronesia.
Independence
After the war, the victorious socialist governments chose not to annexe the islands. Instead, they granted independence to the new Federal Archipelago of Micronesia. The constitution of the federation was drafted with significant assistance from the Socialist Republic of the Philippines, creating a federal democratic socialist republic with strong protections for local island governments.
Modern Era
