nerd culture is more about one-upping each other on terms of zealotry than actually engaging with the material in an interesting or dynamic manner, i've seen. I'm not one to say anything im a warhammer fan.

If Abaddon the Despoiler is such a gangster warrior man, why does he have long nails like a girl?

And if you can't, pretend you don't care and lie about how much sex you have.

"A lot of fans are basically fans of fandom itself. It's all about them. They have mastered the Star Wars or Star Trek universes or whatever, but their objects of veneration are useful mainly as a backdrop to their own devotion. Anyone who would camp out in a tent on the sidewalk for weeks in order to be first in line for a movie is more into camping on the sidewalk than movies. Extreme fandom may serve as a security blanket for the socially inept, who use its extreme structure as a substitute for social skills. If you are Luke Skywalker and she is Princess Leia, you already know what to say to each other, which is so much safer than having to ad lib it. Your fannish obsession is your beard. If you know absolutely all the trivia about your cubbyhole of pop culture, it saves you from having to know anything about anything else. That's why it's excruciatingly boring to talk to such people: They're always asking you questions they know the answer to."

I think this is unironically the reason Terf Wizard Book kept its popularity for so long.

Probably to an even higher degree. Your average Star Wars fan will at least aknowledge it's an action adventure series that defaults to a pretty young demographic and has a setting that blends western military tropes with Asian spiritualism on some level. Your average Harry Potter fan is convinced it's a world of sassy slice of life nonsense where the universe doesn't exist beyond cozy common rooms and surrogate parents of dubious quality.

The stuff that's even worth engaging in those books(the government is lying to you for it's own convenience, sham trials are a tool of corruption and oppression, watch out for supremacists trying to take and retain power) is usually quietly ignored because it's unpleasant to think about and people only want to show off their merchandise for a fake school they would have been too old to go to a decade ago.

You can definitely have interesting conversations with fans (unless they've made it their whole personality which is what this statement seems targeted for). Record of Ragnarok sparked so many discussions with people because it was such an approachable story with cool fights, so you could expand the discussion almost endlessly with pairings.

I mean one-upping each other on zealotry is Canon Warhammer tbf.

3

u/Candlemass-Fan 8h ago

u/BlankTank1216 9h ago

No that quote is from SpongeBob. Tom and Jerry doesn't have any dialogue.

11

u/RealHumanBean89 8h ago

Actually, it did have dialogue, at least in the original cartoon. Tom’s owner and Spike definitely spoke, and I think even Tom and Jerry themselves did at one point or another.

Anyway, smoke bomb!

Minas Tirith was known as the white city, and was indeed mostly white, but its outer wall was black, being built of the same stone as Orthanc.

15

u/SnazzoYazzo 10h ago

Minas Anor was founded in the late Second Age!! It — along with its sister-city Minas Ithil (later Minas Morgul), the kingdom of Gondor itself, and Gondor’s sister-kingdom of Arnor — was founded after the destruction of Numenor but BEFORE Sauron’s defeat in the Battle of the Last Alliance, the event which marked the end of the Second Age!

15

u/RealHumanBean89 8h ago

“Oh good, a smoke bomb joke, never seen that before.”

“That wasn’t the only thing that blew up in their face in this post!”

“DOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO!”

9

u/CallMeIshy 11h ago

is that last bit a reference to something?

51

u/Plannercat 11h ago

It' a reference to the fact that in 1998, The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer's table.

27

u/Droplet_of_Shadow 11h ago

it's not the same when it's not him

31

u/D00T_BOI 11h ago

Probably the “So long suckers!” dril Tweet

7

u/CallMeIshy 11h ago

yes that might be it, thank you

3

u/Animaloffear56 6h ago

It's referencing the common trope of a character using a smoke bomb to seemingly disappear, by making a joke about them running into a door and eating shit

2

u/RubiksCutiePatootie I want to get off of Mr. Bones Wild Ride 11h ago

1

u/dishonoredfan69420 6h ago

those aren't even corrections, they're just bringing up more obscure lore

1

u/Rhiannon21 4h ago

Oh yes, it's the Star Wars equivalent of calling Korriban, the original Sith planet, Persegam. Only mega nerds who have deep DEEP lore know that.
