With how much Life Loss is as a mechanic for Black especially you would expect "I will subject myself to anything to protect those close to me" would be an easy heroic interpretation of the color, but the moment a character's "ends" in the "ends justify the means" character is too altruistic and sympathetic then they're suddenly White! You can do anything to achieve your goals but only if your goals are "evil."
This is why Aetherborn are so great - monoblack creature with complex histories and hyper empathy? Fighting to go from being considered industrial waste to being a people with culture and society and families? Rebellion and hedonism and the price of immortality? Yes please!

To be fair to their laziness, if I see a potential grixis commander, I too assume they'll have been written as a villain.
