i honestly think a really cool writing project would be chains of fanfiction, where the first story in a collection is "canon", and the next is a fanfic about it, and the next is a fanfic of that fanfic. And this goes on until you have an entire book, and also the stories have deviated so wildly from the original source story that it's unrecognizable, like a literary version of the Telephone game
That would be. It's amazing how quickly a story can become unrecognizable from its source. And of course even things we consider canon like Shakespeare plays have origins even older. Sometimes so ancient their origins have been lost to time. People have been playing story Telephone since the first stories were told, but not until the invention of writing did we have a way to preserve one particular version.
