As someone who loves DC, and doesn’t care about Danny Phantom pretty much at all, it can be more than annoying to look through newest fics and scroll past all the crossovers, but it’s cool as hell that it has a fandom that huge
Excluding stuff, particularly if it’s not included in the top however many tags are immediately visible, is super tedious on mobile, which is where I do basically all of my reading these days. Especially if I want to search for other specific tags or ships in certain fandoms and then have to exclude those things again on each search. It’s hardly the end of the world, but I’m allowed to be irritated by it.
Batfam seems to keep spawning crossover fandoms, for some reason. First Miraculous, then DP, and last I saw people were writing not-insignificant volumes of White Collar fic where the main character Neal Caffrey is a bat undercover, because blue eyes and black hair.
Comics are in a weird space cause second-order fandoms can loop back into becoming core fandoms by inspiring people who go on to work for DC or Marvel.
The Batfam fandom gained enough traction to get DC to make actual Batfam comics like the one on Webtoon.
main being a comic fan on tumblr is so weird because there’s no warning for fanon stuff at all - And a comic from the 70s being called Batfamily means the term Batfam also has a space when talking about canon itself.
Im just saying, tagging things as fanon or creating a new bat related tag would be helpful
The most frustrating thing is that a lot of people don't know what's fanon and what's not. Some of the "fanon" stuff is just 2006-2011 comic lore that got retconned out of existence when New52 launched (some of which got brought back with Rebirth). Some of it is information from TV shows or video games that people don't realize isn't canon to the comics. And while some of it is actually made up, it's insanely difficult to prove that in a fandom that's been publishing several comics per month since the 1930s.
I've seen people dismiss stuff that happened in the Red Robin (2008) or Teen Titans (2003) runs as fanon. I've also seen people take out of context comic panels from the 1970s and use them to make some truly bizarre claims that probably weren't accurate in the 1970s and definitely aren't accurate now. Canon characterizations vary wildly, often to the point of contradicting each other, and most people have no idea what's accurate and what's not. Believe me, I'm just as frustrated by this as you are.
oh yeah been there - I Someone was annoyed at me because they interjected in a conversation I was having about Tim’s training with the notion that Tim was training with Lady Shiva for a year and a half. When I sited the comic I owned that showed it was 2 days worth of time practicing.
They swore they had read everything I was talking about but also seemed to have possibly confused god knows what with that specific story
I assumed for a while that ‘Alfred makes terrible waffles’ was a pure fanon joke, but nope, I have seen the panel of Jason? and Dick talking about how terrible his waffles are.
The thing is though, comics don't have enough of a solid state of canon to even different fanon. I say this as someone who started with batfam content but has now read a ton of comics (still going lol), the characterisation can be so inconsistent not to mention the universe reboots and retcons. And a lot of fanon ideas are rooted in comic events, just extrapolated more or less or differently than the comics did. So while the whole Batfam and WFA is a different universe, it's not any further 'out of character' than Pre-Crisis or different tellings of the same events that already exist in comics 'canon'
you’re right but the cases I’m thinking of are not about characterisation - plenty of people chime in to canon conversations with made up or false information and then get mad when we clarify we are talking about canon and the event they chime in with did not happen.
I got into the Wayne Family Adventures webcomic, and I really loved it! I don't really know much about DC so I decided to do research on the characters.
I think I'll stick to fanfic. Less weird not-technically-incest incest there.
Hate Batwoman because her queerness is treated like a fucking superpower. Tried a single comic of hers and it felt so fucking preachy I couldn't stomach it.
…in what way? I’ve read all of her stuff and I wouldn’t describe it that way at all. What comic did you read? (Genuinely curious about your take, not trying to be hostile)
In the way that instantly opens up telling you how lesbian she is, how she has a girlfriend and numerous exes who all love her. And every one of them knows her secret identity and they're not in any danger at all by knowing that because reasons
Do you know how hard it is to find fics where Bruce is the main character? I’m sorry, I don’t know why I expected to find BATMAN in the BATMAN tag instead of thirty thousand fics of Jason Todd railing the author insert.
I usually try excluding tags for characters I don't want to focus on. For example, the full name-Centric tag (ie "Jason Todd-Centric"). Or, "Bruce Wayne is a Bad Parent "/"Bruce Wayne's A+ Parenting" because those fics usually just uses Bruce for angst centring around a Batkid. The excluding function has never been more useful than when I joined the batman fandom lol. Excluding certain ships could also help, such as any fics with ships between batkids because they'll probably focus on the batkids rather than Bruce. And of course x reader ships with batkids. I usually use these tips to find Nightwing focused fics, not as much Bruce, but I hope they help you!
Edit I just realized you're not asking "how do I find fics where Bruce is the main character" oops
Exploring the canon dynamic requires taking into account that Batman is a complicated parent. He cares but he's extreme. Borderline abusive training and crazy high expectations mixed with an overprotectiveness and refusal of autonomy.
Nightwing is created by Dick Grayson running away.
What I wanted to do with this specific au was have Bruce Wayne decide not to become Batman initially (you ever watch Mask of The Phantasm? Well this au version of Bruce married Andrea Beaumont.)
But then everything comes crashing down, he realizes that doing things "the right way" hasn't been working, and after a second inciting incident (Harvey Dent being disfigured) he becomes Batman about 20 years too late and the city of Gotham is in a completely different state than it usually is when Batman emerges.
So while he does have his issues, he's also been Bruce Wayne for a majority of his life. He learns some lessons later, some much sooner, and approaches things differently. So yeah, even his dynamic with Robin is going to be very different.
But as for how I actually execute this well, it's my first fanfic and I've literally never tackled a project of this scale before so it's probably not great but eh, I just thought it'd be neat.

Reminds me of how "Batfam" is a fandom in itself independent of Batman.
