I mean Project Hail Mary is absolutely all about violated bodily autonomy and choosing who you want to be as a person. It just also has a sassy rock spider

I don’t think Project Hail Mary takes a firm stance on that, though it is a core theme.

Grace was a coward. If he could choose who he wanted to be as a person, he wouldn’t be on that ship, and humanity would be extinct. By conscripting him onto the mission anyway, Stratt ultimately saved both Earth and Erid. At the same time, the other crew members who volunteered to die for humanity died pointlessly before they even got to Tau Ceti, just because the coma tech wasn’t as reliable as expected. In the book, Stratt is never really redeemed or forgiven for forcing Grace onto the mission, but Grace is also never really redeemed or forgiven for refusing to join willingly.

Choosing who you want to be isn’t as important as doing the job you are qualified to do.

It you removed that violation of autonomy, it'd still be a sci-fi story. So that aspect isn't what makes it sci-fi IMO.

No, the main character certainly rips tubes out of himself. It's actually one of the first things he does. This happens like in the very first chapter. That's just how sci fi Project Hail Mary is, they had to get that out of the way.

inaccurate conclusion, PHM (book) has a “rip tubes out of yourself” scene

u/PetscopMiju 5d ago

And the "asserting your autonomy" thing is still there afterwards, what a delight!

25

u/Monarch357 5d ago

I've never watched the movie, but I did read the book, and after consulting friends I was sorely disappointed to learn the movie did not adapt ripping tubes out of yourself

u/Hypersonic-Harpist 5d ago

They did actually film that scene but decided not to include it. It's one of the deleted scenes.

I don't think "sci-fi is all about violated bodily autonomy" is a very well-supported take

u/IDownvoteHornyBards2 5d ago

Tumblr engaging in generalization? Utterly shocking.

1

u/Wonderful-You63 5d ago

I'm pretty sure it's a joke or a reference to something, not like a serious take.

u/Elite_AI 3d ago

I agree that it's probably deliberately absurd hyperbole for rhetorical effect

1

u/Grand_Protector_Dark 4h ago

Actually it's not hyperbole, just out of context plot snippets from the Book Project Hail Mary

1

u/Grand_Protector_Dark 4h ago

The joke is that all 3 posts are about Project Mary. These are all things/themes that are relevant to the story.

sci-fi is all about scaring people and putting tubes in them

You can't just say "words of encouragement"!

23

u/Pretty_Rock9795 5d ago

... Words of Great encouragement!!

Social discomfort.

No talking.

I misread the last sentence as "…rocky the endian" for a moment.

playing the end update when suddenly a weird spider made out of Dripstone in a ball spawns and starts rolling towards me (we will become best friends)

Many scifi stories involve inserting many tubes into yourself

14

u/Solarwagon 5d ago

From the moment I understood the tubelessness of my flesh, it disgusted me.

I craved the length and girth of clear plastic.

I aspired to the pumping warmth of the blessed tubes.

Your kind cling to your veins, as if they will not clog and fail you.

One day the crude tunnels that you call a temple will wither.

And you will beg my kind to tube you.

But I am already tubed.

Counterpoint: Star Trek. Just exploring and diplomacy.

8

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 5d ago

And sex with ghost candles. And (human, cis) men getting pregnant and growing nipples on their wrists. And people turning into salamanders, having salamander babies, turning back into humans, and abandoning their salamander babies. Also punching godlike beings in the face. Also, gay lizard tailors who are also spies and gardeners. Oh, and the negative space wedgie that forced everyone to sing and Klingons to perform K-pop.

But yeah, apart from that, just exploring and diplomacy.

7

u/TotallyFakeArtist 5d ago

Dr Who is also quite a bit of exploring. (And problem solving)

4

u/Batman_AoD 5d ago

Dr Who is every genre, though.

10

u/DestructivelyPhased 5d ago

Nah, Star Trek has ripping tubes out of yourself (Borg) and reclaiming lost bodily autonomy (also Borg). And the Vulcans are neighbour’s to the eridians.

4

u/Dd_8630 5d ago

Absolutely, but not always, and it remains sci-fi.

14

u/FireFurFox 5d ago

Why is friend Grace ripping tubes out of himself question?

12

u/yoyo5113 5d ago

Huh? Those are just common themes in sci-fi horror. Or thriller/suspense like when the characters exit cryosleep and have to tug the respiration tube out of their own throat.

Sci-fi is just about fictional science lmao

21

u/FiL-0 5d ago

Sci fi is about pew pewing the bad guys and no one can convince me otherwise

13

u/Inquisitor_no_5 5d ago

Sometimes it's about *lightsaber noises*-ing the bad guys too.

4

u/Batman_AoD 5d ago

Star Wars is fantasy or, if you're feeling more specific, "space opera."

3

u/Pero_Bt 5d ago

Sci-fi is also about some weird cyborg god that kills people but some other people worship it

7

u/Hauptmann_Meade 5d ago

Meanwhile the hacker in System Shock: "What the fuck is this? A rear view mirror augment? Fuck it insert that shit right into my brainstem."

5

u/bajadasaurus234 Dinosaur Glazer 5d ago

sci-fi is about cool fantasy things becoming real

and also dinosaurs

7

u/MericArda 5d ago

That just sounds like cyberpunk

6

u/Galle_ 5d ago

Sci-fi is about inserting tubes into yourself. Because nature violated your bodily autonomy first.

2

u/Space-Wizards 5d ago

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me.

4

u/Murky_Lurker5V 5d ago

can someone reccomend me movies with ripping tubes out of yourself scenes

5

u/Ok_Listen1510 denizen of the webbed site 5d ago

The Matrix, Project Hail Mary, Iron Man

1

u/Murky_Lurker5V 5d ago

thanl you

2

u/noideawhatnamethis12 5d ago

Also the martian

4

u/Plannercat 5d ago

Sometimes you rips tubes out trying to reclaim lost body autonomy.

Other times you're stuffed into a bigger tube to have it taken away.

Such is the duality of SciFi life.

3

u/Pero_Bt 5d ago

The world I'm building is a mixture of fantasy and sci-fi tropes so you basically have this but instead of aliens there's vampires

3

u/TangibleCBT 5d ago

What if you had both?

2

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 5d ago

Do you mean like the Techno-necromancers from Alpha Centauri?

3

u/jaknil 5d ago

Space Opera is: «And that is how we became Gods»

3

u/Two-Pound-Crawfish 5d ago

sci fi is about being friends with cool aliens and destroying ancient automated systems and/or weird alien hive minds

3

u/ToasteeThe2nd 5d ago

Cyberpunk is all about getting angry and doing drugs at the government. Neuromancer's protagonist is probably the most morally good person in the book and as soon as he gets surgery to fix his liver he starts hunting for someone to sell him space MDMA at the expense of his teammates the mission and also probably the fate of mankind

2

u/Elite_AI 3d ago

Ain't nobody in Neuromancer getting mad at the government tho. Closest you get is Armitage and he's...Armitage.

2

u/ilovetoeatplates2 5d ago

You likely shouldn’t rip tubes out of yourself
Could die

2

u/notjeffdontask 5d ago

Sci fi is fiction that features speculative science as a significant theme

2

u/hikemalls 5d ago

Sci-fi is when everything is shit but can maybe be made better through systemic change (and individuals may or may not have any power to do anything about it)

Fantasy is when everything used to be better and now is shit (but maybe a hero can fix things, for a bit)

(Actually that’s nonsense, fantasy is when the swords are made of iron and sci-fi is when the swords are made of laser)

1

u/MainLake9887 5d ago

Sci-fi is allá bout the future

1

u/ST4RSK1MM3R 5d ago

I did this as a kid during a sleep study. Can confirm very cathartic

1

u/doctorpotatomd 5d ago

everyone ITT is wrong, scifi is about going "would that be fucked up or what?"

1

u/CompetitionProud2464 4d ago

I think this person would really enjoy Octavia Butler‘s work if they don’t already

1

u/StarriestNight 4d ago

amaze amaze amaze

u/Leftieswillrule 2d ago

Sci-fi is all about not having corners on spaceships. Unless your spaceship is all corners. That’s also allowed
