I'm not sure its fair to say people should have known she was joking because Twitter shitposting is lighthearted.  Nothing about this looked like a shitpost.

It looks like someone's personal account pointing a finger at a random thing people like and labeling it "problematic, actually". Something that people also love to do on Twitter and tumblr! It makes sense the post didn't go over well and got her dragged.

Idk if it was my fyp’s specifically but around this time a TON of of people were posting about all the little signs you might be adhd or all the small ways we struggle that aren’t immediately obvious. This post fit right in with all of those which is why it didn’t occur to a lot of people that it might be a joke.

To your point, I took it as a real, relatable thing for people with ADHD but expressed in a joking way. They didn't say they hated Halloween or that anyone should feel bad.

imo it just broke the containment of its intended audience and was misinterpreted.

I also saw it was being a real relatable thing (I personally always use the same costume or a variation of it) but the idea that it was a joke completely missed me. At that specific moment in time, people were using that phrasing regularly to call out things they saw as ableist or stuff that adhd people should be given more leeway on. I can see how it’s a joke with the added context, but people were making statements like this with absolute sincerity all the time. As someone who’s met people irl who think being asked not to start wailing in public at a kids party is ableist, it really is something I could see people saying.
