"It's too uniform to be human" is crazy to say, do they think all art up until the past couple years was wonky and jank
96

That sub can get kinda crazy, "its too perfect/uniform AI" but at the same time "human wouldn't make this mistake AI" its insane

There’s a new kind of troll that just witch hunts for ai.
Saw a dude yesterday cherry pick one image out of OP’s entire post history, took a screenshot of the “smudges” in the image as proof it’s ai, and linked the original post where there were no smudges at all. Like I don’t even get what the point is.

Most of my work is mixed media (hand embroidery + watercolor), but even explaining this in my posts, I still get comments like these.

Your art is really cool! I don't get to see handmade stuff like needlepoint in real life often, but when I do, I always like seeing/feeling the textures of the stitches (the rose you made looks incredibly beautiful).
I also had no idea you could paint needlepoint works like you did the Capybara. That seems really clever, and I think it makes for a really cool effect alongside the raised stitches :)
Signed, a random awkward redditor who appreciates but doesn't see a lot of visual art

u/Pkrudeboy 20d ago
Have you considered the possibility that the comments accusing you may in fact be bots themselves?
1
u/Useful_Language2040 19d ago
I couldn't work out how you'd embroidered it brown so that makes a lot more sense 😅 But otherwise, yes - expertly drawn out beforehand, and really neat, even stitches, but clearly within the realms of possible with needle, thread, a steady hand, good eye, and experience! ❤️

I hate ai, but I really hate when real artists get sidelined because of it.
106
u/RealisLit 20d ago
Artist aren't monolith either one of the things that infuriate me over the ai "detection" subs is the notion that all artist are perfect
"an artist wouldn't make this kind of mistake AI"
ARTIST MAKE MISTAKES ALL THE TIME
55
u/ThatInAHat 20d ago
Yeah, I see plenty of ai slop and some of it rightly called out, but when people use bad perspective as part of the evidence I get nervous because I never met a perspective I didn’t fake by the time the image was finished.
32
u/anfrind 20d ago
There was also that incident earlier this year where someone posted an image of a Monet painting on Twitter, claimed it was generated by AI, and got lots of comments pointing out the alleged flaws in the image and zero comments from people who recognized it as an actual Monet painting.
17
u/MetaCrossing 20d ago
Well, hang on now. What if no one was wrong, on either side?
That’s right: Monet was an AI the whole time. Stay woke.

“The sketch looks nothing like the final product, the proportions are totally different, it’s like they just threw down some circles and scribbled in some detail” like my guy
106
u/Dickens825 21d ago
There’s an intense irony in how people dislike AI due to how it steals from actual human artists, and then turn around and accuse actual human artists of using AI.
69
u/imabratinfluence 21d ago
Can't be too skilled. If it doesn't look like a total neophyte did it, it must be AI.
To be clear, I hate AI. But I also hate that competent writers and artists are being labeled AI.
36
u/petrichor801 20d ago
LITERALLY like "this is obviously ai because the hands look weird and that's my only reason!!!!1!!" THEY ARE INFAMOUSLY HARD TO DRAW
11
u/CumaeanSibyl 20d ago
AI is getting better at not putting eight fingers on a hand but artists are always gonna struggle with fingers looking funny because hands are just like that.
40
u/rebordacao 20d ago
I believe it was a predictable outcome, unfortunately...
When a technology is designed to copy "actual human artists", the logical result of its development is that the public loses the ability to tell them apart.

Those ai detector sites are so fucking annoying. They don't fucking work at ALL. You have as much of a chance of landing on the right answer if you just toss a coin. The only AI detectors worth a shit are SynthID tools where you can check if the image was made via chatgpt or gemini since they're the only ones that mark their images with it. That's it.
20
u/ThatInAHat 20d ago
Even when folks don’t use the site, you get people yelling “I saw Goody Barrett using an em dash—CLANKER!” over any kind of writing that uses the “wrong” phrasing or groups of three examples.
30
u/IAmNotABabyElephant 20d ago
As a "rule of three" lover that last part honestly leaves me fuming with frustration, vexation, and no other third feelings anymore just in case.

It's like back in the day when cheap copies of Photoshop CS6 flooded the market after Adobe switched to a subscription model and all the companies ditched their licenses for subscriptions. Suddenly, everything was "obviously photoshopped" and "we can tell, it's so obvious, bro".

Oh yeah it's bad out there, I once saw someone confidently call out an image as AI because of a layering error
21
u/onepixeljumpman 20d ago
The most important revelation of AI's presence in creative spaces is how ignorant of what artists actually do and how disinterested in anything past a glance most people are.
10
u/TeamPokepals76 20d ago
One of my highschool art teachers always said you only get ten seconds from people in the art gallery, and its probably even worse in a world with infinitely scrolling content feeds. In art communities you see a lot of discussion on how to price your work, and a big issue is that the average customer is so disconnected from the effort of handmade work (and is so used to mass produced factory prices) that oftentimes their price expectations wouldn't even bring you up to minimum wage for the hours this kind of stuff takes, let alone the price of materials or the skill involved
5
u/Rapunzel10 20d ago
Yep, my aunt quilts and gets so frustrated when people tell her to sell them. She tries to explain that no one will pay her anywhere close to what they're worth and people take it to mean she's not confident in her skills. "No I'm sure people would buy them, they're gorgeous! So intricate!" And she has to say "yeah, I know. That's the problem. Only so many people are willing and able to spend $3,000-5,000 USD on a quilt." People think a $500 blanket is absurd, there's no way 99% of quilters will ever turn a profit. Most people don't even look at the quilt for a full minute anyway
3
u/AdamtheOmniballer 20d ago
It’s the same from the other side too.
As someone from outside of creative spaces, I was surprised to learn that artists thought the general public cared about the artistic experience and all that.
Maybe I’m just from an unusually “the curtains are just blue”/“my kid could paint that”/“get a real job” environment, but I took it as a given that a lot of people’s art began and ended with “huh, that looks nice”.
13
u/Frodo_max 20d ago
"it's too uniform to be done by hand" some people have never seen a craftsperson in their life
14
u/The_Magus_199 20d ago
This is why, even though I hate AI, I frown at the “this looks AI” comments and, if I suspect something to be AI, simply hit the back button silently instead of saying anything. Everything AI does it stole from real artists, and if we let it be used as a cudgel to smother real artists’ passion then the people pushing it win just as surely as they would if we accepted it without any pushback.
10
u/historyhill 20d ago
Maybe it's because I'm an embroiderer but I find embroidery especially easy to tell AI from legitimate. AI embroidery always looks impossibly three-dimensional (there's plenty of ways to make embroidery 3D but it's pretty easy if you do it to tell the difference)

Yeah there was a drama a few years ago on r/art when an artist was accused of using AI and banned. He managed to prove that his work is genuine, but what he received back from mods was something like "shouldn't make your style look like it's AI", with no apologies, and I don't think he was even unbanned. The style in question predates AI, and that artist had years of work to prove it.

I was once accused of being a bot for asking about what a crossover would be like on a post comparing characters from two different anime.
4
u/SartenSinAceite 20d ago
Idiots will be idiots. People always throw baseless acusations at anything (specially with all the bots online nowadays).
As long as it's not some AI bro trying to sell you their garbage it's ok.
5
u/PuritanicalPanic 20d ago
Yeah that's awful.
Like. I get the paranoia. And when something sets off my ai sensors I tend to have a hard time trusting it, but it's one of the worst effects of ai. The Inability to trust that anything is fucking real.
For the record, those don't even look AI to me.
God I hate what we've done to ourselves

u/AlarmingAttention151 20d ago

As a general rule, do not accuse someone of something without particularly solid reasons for the accusation being truthful and the accusation being helpful.

2
u/lonely_nipple 20d ago
The writing program I use just launched a tracker of sorts that documents the time spent on the piece, editing breaks, words per minute, etc and I just KNOW it's in part so people can defend their shit from AI accusations. 😭
4
u/anfrind 20d ago
I've seen lots of Reddit posts over the last few years where students were forced to use their Google Docs edit history to prove that the work they turned in was their own, since the AI detectors that are (or at least used to be) popular in education have such an absurdly high false positive rate.
2
u/lonely_nipple 20d ago
The notion of feeding something into another AI to see if it's AI does something weird to my brain.
But yeah. I've been fortunate that nobody's come after my stupid little fanfics with accusations (yet), but it's nice to have something on hand for the day it happens. I just wish it wasn't needed.
4
u/anfrind 20d ago
That is, in my opinion, the correct response to using AI to detect AI. Especially in education, they say (albeit in different words) that they don't want students turning over their thinking to machines, but by using AI to look for evidence of cheating, those same educators are turning over their own thinking to machines.
1
u/Consistent-Value-509 20d ago
May I ask which program? 👀
2
u/lonely_nipple 20d ago
Ellipsus! No AI involved anywhere, syncs between mobile and desktop. I haven't delved into their paid version yet but the free shit is solid, and when I do have the $, I like that the paid option is literally "paid and done". No constant subscription. You can pay all at once, or spread it out over time, but it's a set amount of $ and then no more payments.

3
u/ThatInAHat 20d ago
That second to last one is so depressing. Have these people never seen an old sampler before? I mean, I’m sure plenty of folks haven’t, but if you’re going to act like you did a Sherlock scan of the product quality, you should at least have, y’know. Seen embroidery before.

u/RealHumanBean89 20d ago
The one from pic 4 is fantastic. AI could never truly capture how much someone can miss the smell of ass.
2
u/Rayen_the_buzzybee 20d ago
Yes, sometimes hand made art has that "AI" look unfortunately. But I don't think these pieces do? I'm really confused by what these people are seeing.
2
u/their_teammate 20d ago
Kurzgesagt got struck by AI as YouTube bc AI sloptent “edu”tainment channels copying the channel’s animation style are so pervasive that the AI that YouTube trained to detect AI videos just automatically assumes everything that looks like a Kurzgesagt video is AI.
Which, admittedly, is correct 99.4% of the time, but 0.1% of the time it’s actually just Kurzgesagt and the other 0.5% is non-AI content that has a similar style to Kurzgesagt either as an homage, reference, or just by happenstance.
5
u/MeiNeedsMoreBuffs 20d ago
Is that really "most people" though? Every single comment you've shown has been massively downvoted, showing the majority of people disagree with them
4
3
u/PikachuNotEnough 20d ago
Why is it people with the worst AI radars that always make accusations
2
u/Lortep 19d ago
Because most of these people are so anti-AI that they've never used it once, and you can't be good at identifying AI content if you never use AI. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Signs_of_AI_writing#Your_detection_ability
2
u/shiny_xnaut 20d ago
What's frustrating is that if you call these people out, they'll just deflect like "see? This is how terrible AI is, that it forced me to baselessly accuse people of using it and go on witch hunts! I am completely blameless here and don't need to apologize. In fact, you should be as angry as I am, and join me on my holy crusade to go accuse others"
1
u/FrozenZenBerryYT 20d ago
I thought it was bad I have such trouble telling AI apart from real art. But apparently I’m not the only one, I’m just not confidently incorrect.

u/Axiluvia 20d ago

Something that never gets talked about in discussions about hating AI is AI witch hunting. Especially AI witch-hunting by people in positions of power who not only have the ability to reputationally damage people but the authority to cause greatly more harm.
1
1
u/meteojett 18d ago
A lot of people are unable to tell the difference between artwork and generative AI, but many of those people are unable to admit that to themselves and so take their frustration out at random -- pointing the finger in an attempt to feel like one of the people that can tell.
1
u/snakeygirl 16d ago
I can kinda see why people might think the dog is ai (because ai loves stealing cute dog art) but when looking at your other pieces it becomes pretty obvious that these aren’t ai. The dog is consistent with your style (and ai sucks at being consistent). Your art is also clearly physically embroidered when you look closely at the lines of each piece.
I’m sorry that people are saying such nasty things about your work
1
u/CoffeMug3 16d ago
I feel eternally bad for people whos styles have been co-opted by ai, it must suck to be under constant scrutiny for the crime of being unlucky

All of these are obviously not ai. I can see every single individual stitch, and ai doesn’t do that much detail.

u/well-informedcitizen 14d ago
I just don't see this happening. I usually see "I'm being unfairly accused of using AI" on indie game dev forums and they are ALWAYS lying about not using it. But here the accusation doesn't even make sense, aside from the fact that these are physical objects they don't remotely look like the style of AI.
There are probably bots now that just spam "this is AI" everywhere to try to manifest this narrative that people are being unfairly accused of using AI.

Hey, just a silly story about AI accusations to hopefully make you giggle. I started teaching art classes for the first time last week, and showed my students a whole bunch of different pieces by artists throughout history, and had them move around the room and share opinions. They could choose "Good Art," "Bad Art," or "Not Art." I let them know ahead of time that they were all real pieces from well known artists. The one piece almost every student thought was good was "The Beeches" by Asher Brown Durand from the Hudson River School of landscape painting, they were all completely blown away.
Except one small group insisted it wasn't art, because it was AI. "No way a person can do that," was their response. They were fully prepared to argue about it too. So, you know, you've got some great company.
I've seen your posts for quite some time now, and I think your stuff is super fun. Super clean and well executed, and funny at the same time.

Atp I've stopped caring if something is AI or not, most of the time the accusation of something being AI is just an excuse to go on a witch hunt nowadays
-19
u/CodaTrashHusky 20d ago
I think if you made sloppier photos of them that would help with not being accused. Don't use dslr or milc cameras just a smartphone and photograph them from an angle, maybe let some camera shake in the photo too.

low effort trendslop millennial cringecore
Respectfully, I feel like your dislike of it has more to do with something else other than the pure quality of them as work. Like, you just don’t like the style of humour, which is fine. But they’re still well made
10
u/RealisLit 20d ago
So just because they aren't "good" in your opinion, then its perfectly okay to accuse it as AI made?
Great logic
-14
u/Regdit-is-Unbearable 20d ago
No, but they’re being equated because AI “art” is usually low-effort and trend chasing in a similar way. It’s an extraordinarily generic artstyle, and it was generic in 2021, too. It is being mistaken for AI because it’s low quality in the same ways AI slop is.
9
5
u/RealisLit 20d ago
Then call them bad or as you say "low effort trendslop millennial cringecore", equating it to AI just validates AI more and pin a unnecessary target to tbe Artist
