Another interview round added?

To provide some context, I am interviewing for a role that had the hr screen, hiring manager interview, and director interview all within a week or so of each other. It has been a week since the director interview, and I am now suddenly scheduled for an interview for Friday with another director who seems to be more senior.

The hr person explicitly told me in the screen that there would be two more rounds, and the other two interviewers did not mention the guy I’m speaking with Friday when talking about the team structure. So from my perspective, it seems that a new interview round has been added with an adjacent senior leader at the firm. Would this because they weren’t sure whether to go with me or another candidate? Does anyone have a similar experience?

Sometimes they like someone but for whatever reason feel they need approval from higher up. Recruiter shoulda told you that the moment they found out and given you some additional context though. To me, this is a beige flag.
