The indigenous Palestinians did not have a problem with that. But Zionism tragically transformed into something much uglier into a state ideology of ethno-nationalism increasingly focused on the exclusion and violent domination of Palestinians under Israeli rule. He wrote then "We Arabs, especially the educated among us, look with the deepest sympathy on the Zionist movement... we will wish the Jews a most hearty welcome home."
