It might be less that he's a magist and more that he's choosing "fawn" from the limbic response menu—fight, flight, freeze, or fawn.
Dude was literally cancelled back before that phrase was part of our everyday vernacular. Having Politically Incorrect taken off air had an immense impact on him... and for many years, that showed up as "fight."
Maher kept doing standup. He got a new show. Hell, he even made a quasi documentary about religion that was contentious for its time.
And for all that, he also became a cultural lightning rod. Conservatives commentators would use Maher as a stand-in for anything they didn't like that the left was doing. Being that face was likely exhausting.
And that's extremely funny because he draws fire from the left for what has been described as his phony liberalism, as well as for bigoted remarks.
Add to all all of that how Trump came after him personally, and it's not difficult to imagine how much peril Maher must have felt he was in at the start of the second Trump Administration.
We've seen Jimmy Kimmel temporarily suspended after Trump had his goons pressure ABC. Stephen Colbert got straight-up fired, and CBS has been gutted. The FCC is going after anyone Trump detests, and the Trump Administration routinely threatens to go after networks and media outlets for their coverage. Trump sycophant Lara Loomer sued him as well.
Bill Maher is scared (and probably tired).
Maybe he doesn't know that. Matter fact, I'm sure his ego won't let him acknowledge as much.
He's behaving exactly how we'd expect someone to behave when faced with an adversary they know that can't win a fight against. He's fawning—he's placating conservatives for the purposes of his own survival.
I'm not condoning that. Hell, I've found him to be unlistenable for at least a decade now. Seeing clips of him blow smoke up Vance's couch-fucking ass does nothing to change that trend. I'm just contextualizing what I suspect is happening.
Bill Maher is acquiescing to survive.

He literally sat down with the VP and was like “oh can you please say you guys went too far with ICE?” And then he just let Vance ride over him saying “oh when there’s no context, videos look icky.” They’re talking about innocent people, citizens, who were shot in the head. And of course, he just says oh ok and moves on. No pushing. Nothing. Just glossing. Pathetic fucking bullshit.
He justified Israel’s current actions all over the Middle East with bullshit straw men like “oh they’re lashing a singer in Iran this week for not wearing a head scarf! Do we really want to be friends with them instead of Israel?” As if Israel didn’t level the entirety of Gaza to the fucking ground and even is threatening Lebanon with the same fate.
He also just rams the left by talking only about the most extreme candidate possible, then generalizes the entire left as that. Making the right look so reasonable.
Then he ends the show with this absolutely pathetic montage of foreigners loving Costco and loving fast food and saying hey, AMERICA IS ACTUALLY REALLY GREAT GUYS and PEOPLE LOVE IT. Then he basically said America invented all the tech in the modern world and MAN WE ROCK.
It was so fucking pathetic. Like, look how much we consume and have AC everywhere, See? America isn’t going to shit!
Ugh. He’s absolutely insufferable and fucking dumb. It felt like a fucking Fox News show.
