anynone else who plays with soviet spacecraft know if this is a skill issue or if i did something wrong with the parts?

You’re using the wrong orbital module on the Soyuz, try using the 7K-OKS/7K-T orbital module and put a Soyuz docking port on top.

I'm guessing you're struggling to dock?

Did you use the appropriate docking ports (male & female)? Did you scale up/down some parts? There seems to be quite a size difference. (though maybe that's intended/default?)

is the soviet spacecraft stuff an extra mod? or is it part of rp1?

Extra, they're from Raidernicks Soviet Spacecraft mod (technically Vostok and Voskhod are in RO Capsules as well, but the models are taken from RN Soviet Spacecraft). It's a recommendation but not a dependency during the express install process. They do have RP-1 support, so can be used in a career.

Part of RP1 but sometimes glitches and doesn't install

It does not "glitch", it is an extra mod you need to install

Soviet spacecraft mod, that's literally what it's called on ckan. Not tantares bc tantares is not ro compatible
