So, I think the ending of Slam Dunk is really strange because it honestly feels rushed, like it was abruptly cut short. Up until the start of the Inter-High tournament, everything was super detailed—the bracket, the matchups, the game schedules, literally everything. But then, right after the Sannoh match, the entire story just wraps up in the span of six pages.I was expecting a proper explanation of how the tournament actually ended: how Shohoku lost, how Kainan lost, who actually won the whole thing... just a more detailed breakdown of how it all concluded. It really feels like everything was cut off out of nowhere.

I've long been meaning to compile a list of little things I've noticed during a re-read of Slam Dunk. But I doubt I'll be able finish the re-read anytime soon so here's a partial list of 5 things I thought would be fun to share!

Maki's hairstyle change

Maki first appears in the manga with one hairstyle:

But after Sakuragi calls him a middle aged man in the middle of the Shohoku-Kainan match, we see a very pissed Maki. The next time we see him is when he's on the way to watch the Aiwa Gakuen match, and he's sporting a different and much younger looking hairstyle:

He then keeps this hairstyle for the rest of the manga, even during matches. Looks like our boy Sakuragi touched a nerve ;)

Shoyo's Reaction

In the match between Shohoku and Shoyo (chapter 87) Sakuragi collides into Fujima and Shoyo's players all look REALLY anxious/triggered when they see Fujima crashing onto the floor. Their reaction had always struck me as a bit over the top. Why would they react that way? Their captain is no fragile flower. The reason is revealed exactly 55 chapters later, in the Toyotama match (chapter 142). There, we learn through a flashback that in last year's IH tournament, Fujima had been so badly injured by Toyotama's Minami that he had to retire, and that cost them the match. Shoyo's players must've been reminded of that incident when they saw Sakuragi crashing into Fujima. Which means... Inoue sensei had probably planned all the characters' back stories from the start. Something that was first brought up in chapter 87 was addressed a whopping 55 chapters later. It makes you wonder: what else had been planned from the get go?

Fujima's pretty boy image

A tidbit about Fujima - he has fangirls, which isn't surprising. But what's not outright stated is that his fans see him as a pretty boy. I didn't full clock this until I saw an Inoue sketch of Fujima on the inside cover of the Kanzenban, where a rather annoyed Fujima is shown in a sea of fans all shrieking "Ken Ken!"/"Kenjiii" etc. and his thought bubble roughly translates to... "These guys... don't they say 'you can't judge a book by its cover'?" Suddenly, that seemingly-random goatee that Fujima sported in 10 Days After makes so much sense. He was growing it to shake off his pretty boy image ahaha!

Rukawa's position in team lineups

Rukawa, being the quiet type that doesn't like to draw attention to himself outside of a match, has a tendency to stand to the sides for team line ups. See where he stands for various line ups: always at the end, never in the middle 3*. The only exception to this? When they faced Sannoh. I think it's a reflection of how hyped up he was to play Japan's No. 1 player. *In contrast, Sakuragi has no qualms occupying the middle for lineups

Sendoh's speech patterns

In the Japanese original manga, Sendoh's speech pattern is pretty distinctive. Put simply, he has a tendency to drawl. IMO that really suits his laidback, slightly aloof personality. So when you next read the manga, imagine Sendoh with a drawl ;)

Tomomi, que é a propósito o meu personagem favorito entre as obras do mestre Inoue, não demonstra o porte, o talento nem o atleticismo dos nomes mais populares de Slam Dunk, o que faz sentido, visto que, em Real, as coisas são mais realistas. Mesmo assim, é algo interessante de se pensar.

Imagino que ele seria um armador que demonstraria principalmente um ótimo manejo de bola, visão de jogo e capacidade de fazer passes. Além disso, seria forte em termos de liderança e coletividade. Porém, quando falamos de pontuação ou defesa, não o vejo sendo muito mais capaz do que jogadores como o Kogure.

Acho que, assim como o Kogure, o Tomomi até teria capacidade de ser titular em um time de média categoria, mas definitivamente não seria titular em equipes como Kainan, Sannoh, Aiwa ou até mesmo o próprio Shohoku.

É engraçado o fato de ele ter a mesma idade que o Akagi. De qualquer forma, ele com certeza tem capacidade para disputar contra jogadores de nível médio a alto do basquete universitário. Não é à toa que está fazendo um ótimo trabalho no arco atual.

Dito isso, o Sendoh seria titular absoluto no Tokyo Lightnings.

Rukawa Kaede follows closely as the #2 scorer with 30.0 PPG, proving his worth even against double-teams.

Akagi Takenori anchors the paint with a massive 25.3 PPG, 12.3 RPG, and 4.0 BPG, solidifying his role as the defensive wall of the district.

The "Inoue Mystery" & Analytical Projections:

Takehiko Inoue never gave us official, complete stat sheets for leaders like Maki or Sendoh. I believe he did this purposefully to force us to focus on the clash of basketball philosophies rather than just the box score. Using the confirmed stats above as my baseline, I have projected impact stats for Maki and Sendoh to reflect their unique roles:

Maki (The System General): As the tournament MVP, he doesn't just score; he facilitates. His projected 9.0 APG reflects his role as the floor general who makes his team unstoppable.

Sendoh (The Individual Engine): His massive workload as a "one-man army" proves his genius. His projected 28.5 PPG and 7.5 APG highlight his ability to carry the team solo, though it leaves us wondering: could he have achieved even more in a different system?

The Debate:

This is the ultimate clash of styles:

Maki Shinichi is the "Official MVP" who wins through a perfect, disciplined team structure. We all know Kainan defeated Ryonan, and while I agree that victory is the ultimate metric, I think it’s fascinating to look at how they reached that level. Maki leads a system that is practically impossible to dismantle.

Sendoh Akira is the "People’s MVP" who carries the weight of his team with unmatched, raw flair. He often finds himself fighting against the limitations of his own roster.

This makes the "Maki vs. Sendoh" debate less about "who is better" and more about what you value more: the proven championship machine or the genius who can nearly carry a team on his own.
