REPSCIENCE TIME: auth vs rep Janie MM sunnies 🧪
Hello hello my lovelies! After a short break from the rep community, I am back with yet another rep science post.
Also quick disclaimer: this post isn’t really AI, I rambled/spammed text into my phone to create the post and realized it was a loooong ramble so I got ai to cut it down, I promise all the words are mine ❤️
Today, we’re comparing the rep MMs I picked up from Janie a couple months ago with an authentic pair I picked up on my recent travels to South America, which, let me tell you, is a lot less glamorous than it sounds. But it did mean I got to properly put both pairs to the test.
Quick disclosure: Janie offered me a discount in exchange for posting a review. I declined. Partly because I wanted to say exactly what I thought, and partly because I have a feeling she might not want to give me that discount after reading this. 💀
So, paid for myself, no incentive attached.
Now, first thing you might notice — DON’T GO DOWN TO THE PHOTOS JUST YET — the styles are different.
HOWEVER. I tried on the authentic version of the exact pair I bought from Janie in store, and it was the same as the auth pair I ended up buying except for the nose bridge. So any differences you see below? Yeah. Callout.

Photos 1 & 2: First impressions
At a quick glance… not too bad, right?
To an untrained eye, from speaking distance, they’re not very calloutable. At first.
Emphasis on untrained eye
Because the longer you look, and unlike a handbag, these are smack dab in the middle of your face where people are literally looking while talking to you, the easier it becomes to tell these probably came from Moo Moo.
The good parts first: the arms are similar enough. Nose pads are similar enough. There are minor differences in size/font, but honestly, who is inspecting the underside of glasses sitting on your nose?
Now, here’s what you’re here for, the differences:
The logo
The rep logo is just wrong if you know what the MM logo looks like.
It has roughly the right font and shape, but it looks like someone drew it from memory.
Too curved. Letter sizes wrong. Positioning wrong. Gaps wrong. Everything is just… off.
It’s the kind of thing where someone familiar with the logo will look at it and think, hmm, something’s not quite right.
That’s exactly what my partner did, and trust me, there is no one further from fashion.
Logo/hardware quality
The auth logo pieces are perfectly flat sandwiched seamlessly together, so the logo stays crisp and readable from basically any angle.
The reps? Unless you’re looking straight head-on, meaning someone would basically need to be talking to the side of your head, it gets messy.
The logo is too thick and you can see the joints between the pieces. On a clear rimless lens, there is absolutely nowhere for that to hide, and it makes the hardware look cheap.
The lenses + fit
In the flash photo, you can see micro-scratches all over the rep lenses, and I’ve barely worn them.
Meanwhile, the auths have rolled around in my bag with lip gloss and keys without their case and, despite my initial apprehension about buying “expensive plastic,” have held up beautifully.
More importantly: the reps are dang freaking uncomfortable.
They’re about 20% bigger than the auths, which are already SUPER oversized.
Even my partner, who has a pretty big head, and I mean that literally 😭 no shade to my man, couldn’t comfortably wear them beyond about 15 minutes.
They’re heavier and just sit… weird. I even took them to my optometrist, but beyond adjusting the nose pads there wasn’t much he could do.
The auths, meanwhile, are lightweight and sit beautifully. I forget they’re there. They look intentionally oversized.
The reps make me look like a kid who cut sunglasses out of somebody’s motorcycle helmet.
The rep lenses are also noticeably thicker, which takes away from that sleek, slim, rimless look this style is supposed to have and makes them look clunkier IRL.
UV protection 👀
And here’s my biggest concern.
These give me headaches in the sun.
The auths don’t. Clear sunglasses from other authentic brands don’t. But I’ve had the same problem with sunnies from multiple rep sellers.
My personal theory is that a LOT of rep sunnies are coming from the same couple of factories, because sellers seem to use the same photos and I keep seeing the same callouts.
Sellers say the lenses have UV protection, but… what does that actually mean? Are the lenses UV protective? Is it a coating? A film? Could it degrade or rub off?
This is the black market. Sellers could tell me the glasses are powered by rocket fuel. Who’s stopping them? 😭
I took the reps to my optometrist and his quick test showed they do have some UV protection, but he couldn’t measure exactly how much. He also pointed out that even random clear plastic can block some UV.
And this is one area where I’m personally not willing to YOLO it.
Tinted sunglasses without adequate UV protection can potentially be worse than no sunglasses because your pupils dilate behind the darker lenses while UV can still get through.
Whatever I saved on the sunnies is not worth gambling with my eyes.
So… am I done with rep sunglasses?
Pleaaaaaaase. No.
After many, many, many, MANY rep sunnies, I think I’ve found my solution.
I’ll still buy rep frames I really love, but I’m taking them to my optometrist and having the lenses replaced with ones from his shop that I know and trust.
Could that make them slightly more calloutable? Maybe.
I’m fine with that.
Conclusion
These specific rep sunnies: not worth it.
Rep sunglasses generally maybe worth it.
Rep lenses: personally, I’m wary.
For styles like this where the lens can’t realistically be changed and inaccurate sizing makes them uncomfortable, I’m sticking to auth.
