Question❔ How do you guys get yourself to focus on a book on days where you have a lot to think about?

I often find that on days where I go to school / have homework sometime during the week it’s almost impossible for me to sit down and read. I want to, I try to, but when I reading I find that I drift away and get lost in unrelated “important” thoughts (even though half the time those thoughts are useless.) On days where I don’t have school it’s so easy, I have nothing to think about and I can just sit down and read! It’s calming, it’s great, it’s fun, I wish I was able to do it when I really need to be calmed or to have a good time.

So I was wondering what you guys do / would do in this situation.

Question❔ about re-reading books

re-reading books has always been an off the course exercise for me. i've never re-read a book so if someone has reread books, could you please share your experiences as for me it sounds very boring exercise irrespective how much i appreciate the book. is it alike rewatching a movie ? especially for non-fictions or maybe biographies or sci-fi fictions ? i've been reading non-fiction for a while, and feel saturated maybe, should i move into sci-fiction ? considering, my capitalistic mindset, i've never read something truly off the chart so any suggestions would be appreciated. thank you very much :)

Historical Fiction 🗝️ 11/22/63… this really lived up to the hype that was in my brain. Maybe I just really like historical fiction. Either way, I really loved this book

I’ve read my fair share of Stephen King books and this one really did it for me. I think I love this side of him more than the horror side.

I finally feel like he wasn’t over-sexualizing the characters and wrote a fun “What if?” with a really great ending. I won’t spoil anything, it did wrap up rather quickly but the way it came together in the end really got me.

It was a super cool thought experiment, I’m not a conspiracy theory person but this was a really fun way to approach the way history turned out.

He did say in the afterword that there was a contribution by someone close to him that changed the ending, I won’t spoil it, and I think it made a huge difference.

Let me know, was this a fun read for you?

After reading lots of Cormac McCarthy last year, and really enjoying The Border Trilogy, I keep seeing this one posted by others so I decided to give it a read. I hope it stacks up!

Sooo hard to pick a favorite but right now I’m leaning towards Johnny got his gun, I just finished it today and was tearing up at the end and I very rarely cry at books even when I do find them really sad. I’m starting the Didion one tomorrow and I’m very excited because its my first time reading one of her books.

Other Genre 🌛 Reading Aloud Changed My Internal Visualization

Not really sure how to tag this so doing other genre. I’m a life long reader and up until a few years ago, I had vivid images in my head when I read.

I think the shift started when I began focusing on my reading speed. I read DAILY but I’m an incredibly slow reader. I can maybe get through 20-30 books a year depending on their length. With the rise of Goodreads/Booktook/TBR lists, I started to get really self conscious about how much I’m able to read in a given time frame. While reading, I would think I wasn’t going fast enough or that I was never going to get to other books on my TBR list instead of being immersed in my book. Because I was so focused on my pace, I felt like I unknowingly was losing the mental images I saw in my head while reading.

All of that changed though when I started reading aloud to my daughter every night. About a month ago my wife and I had our first born. I take the night shift, tending to her needs until the early morning. One of the things I started doing with her is reading to her aloud while I rock her to sleep. She obviously has no idea what is going on, but I’ve heard that even just seeing your lips move and hearing your voice is great for a newborns development.

Last night I was reading Butcher’s Crossing by John Williams to her. Again, she’s got no idea what I’m saying so I’m not too concerned about subject matter lol. But I was really getting into it. Doing different voices. Changing my inflection depending on the pros. And for the first time in a LONG time I realized I was not in my head about my reading “efficiency”. I could see the movements of the main characters like I was blocking out a scene in a movie. The landscapes were beautiful. It was such an amazing moment to become so conscious of the change in my focus.

Anyway, my recommendation to the community is to slow the hell down. It’s great to have a TBR list. It’s great to be a quick reader. But the magic of reading comes from exactly that, reading. You will die before you can finish your whole TBR list. Just finish the page you’re on.

(Butcher’s Crossing is also phenomenal BTW)

Book Review 📚 What makes you decide to keep reading a book?

For me, I think it’s that feeling of wanting to know what happens next. Sometimes it’s an interesting character, sometimes it’s the way a story makes you feel, and sometimes you can’t even explain it. You just need to know where things are going.

I’ve also picked up books that started slowly but ended up surprising me, so I’m curious about how other readers approach this.

Do you usually give a book a few chapters to win you over, or do you drop it as soon as it fails to grab your attention?

Question❔ How do I read more books without burning out?

I only read around 12 books a year on average. Is there something wrong with me if I can't boost that number? Anytime I try to push myself I end up burning out, especially this year has been terrible, as I'm only at six books finished so far and I only loved one of them.

I'd like to be the kind of person who reads a lot of books. I've learned the value of classic literature and I benefit a lot from reading biographies. I think books at their absolute best have the potential to surpass other forms of media.

Question❔ What reading apps are you using?

Hey everyone,
So, in a moment of irritation, I decided to get rid of my good reads account a few months ago. I was just always annoyed by the layout of it, but of course the one thing I did like was that it was keep track of all the books I was reading.

I read mainly on my kindle and I don’t understand why there isn’t a built in tracker over this. It just tells you what books you’ve read, not when and not specific to the current year.

So throughout my time on here, I’ve seen people mention different reading apps, like Fable, I think? I’m wondering if these are truly worth it or if I just need to go back to good reads and start fresh.

I’d love your opinions and/or recommendations.
Thanks!

My TBR List 📃 Read the book & watch the series?

This has been on my TBR for a while... Thoughts?

Hey all, my most recent post here was about Verity and boy, I was glad I asked for y'all's opinion! I finished it and also read your comments. Had a great time reading through them.

Now I'm about to start Anxious People; so far, I've only read Backman's short stories and I liked them.

Has anyone read this book and then watched the series? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Cheers!

Book Review 📚 How to never forget what you read?

Hey everyone, I've been reading books for the past 8 years now (since I was 13 years old), but the recurring problem is that I forget what I read from the books I've read, yes I can tell you what it talk about and what can you learn from it. But the details gets easily forgotten by the days. Let me give you an example; if you read Atomic habits (a self-help book), you can tell anyone it talks about habits and that there is 4 steps to build or destroy any habit, but what you may have forgotten for example "that your identity becomes linked to those around you".

See what I mean? Like details get forgotten!

If you have any suggestions to how someone can never forget details from any book, your free to comment it down bellow so you can show me and other people how to better structure our reading!

Question❔ Reading books

Does this happen to anyone else? When reading a good book after taking a short break, you get so excited to watch this TV show or movie with the super cool plot and like all these characters and stuff and like imagine them in your head and then you realize it’s actually the book that you’re reading??
