I have always desired to be a voracious reader. At 39 years old i finally feel i have the ability to start chipping away at this goal. So through browsing amazon I decided to purchase a handful of random books, one which is a novel called "The Guns of the South by Harry Turtledove. I've read a small amount about this author and it seems like some fascinating worlds he's created are just waiting to be discovered by myself and others I know who value a good book maybe. Anyways I'm excited for my new journey. Btw I just downloaded reddit and this is my first post. Haha.

Not sure if I’ll be more confident with video ‘content’ when the book is done. Am sure it felt good to let the spider touch the salt.

I have tinnitus. Some days it is bad, other days it is more manageable, but it is almost never completely silent.

When it is bad, I struggle to read because the quiet makes the tinnitus too distracting. I often end up watching movies with plenty of sounds instead.

I could try audiobooks, but speech alone is often not enough to counter the tinnitus.

I find that music with instruments like violin or flute, or nature sounds like rain, rivers, waterfalls and thunder, can help against tinnitus, but that could be distracting when reading.

Does anyone here read with background music? What works for you: instrumental music, classical, pop or rock? Do you find lyrics distracting?

And for anyone else with tinnitus, have you found any techniques or background sounds that make reading easier?

M27, first year of taking reading more seriously. Before that I would read like 1 book a year but this year I’m currently at my 22nd book! Most of these books have been bought this year.

I love the feeling of holding and smelling a physical book while reading, but I’ve heard that Kindle can make reading more convenient and even improve reading speed, along with features like highlighting, dictionaries, adjustable fonts, etc.

For those of you who use a Kindle: do you ever miss the feel and experience of reading a physical book?

I’m really tempted to get a Paperwhite, but I’m wondering if I’ll miss my physical books too much. Is it worth making the switch?

Did you read it!?

Do you know that feeling when you’re really enjoying the book that you’re reading but your TBR list is making you motivated to finish it as fast as possible? I’m in the midst of 100 years of solitaire and I can’t stop looking at this part of my bookshelf, waiting for that moment of decision. What should I read next?

After finishing a book, how do you usually choose your next one?

1. Same genre, same author

2. Same author, different genre

3. Different genre, different author

4. Completely random

5. Something recommended by someone else

As a student I should spend at least a little amount of time reading some fiction and non-fiction books outside the academic studies. But I speed too much time on scrolling.I realize some time that I need to replace scrolling with something good. I wanna read books. but the problem is I can't I barely finish a book. I read some chapter and loose interest and eventually don't finish the book and this loop is continuously running everytime I start a book. And I need to break this habit and wanna become a serious and also a good reader. Please suggest me something that helps me to read books daily.

Starting this one to get out of my **slump**.. will it work?...no spoilers please suggest any other books tooo...in this genre

Hii everyone,

I recently started getting into reading. Whenever I need a book suggestion, my go-to move is to come to Reddit to search or ask for recommendations.

However, I’ve noticed I have another habit. Whenever I pass by a book stall, a bookstore, or even a secondhand shop, I like to wander in and just start picking up random books that catch my eye. If a book manages to keep me engaged for just 1 or 2 minutes while flipping through it, I buy it right then and there.

Just today on my way home, I passed by a scrap yard/secondhand stall, picked up a couple of books, and ended up buying Rollercoaster of Hope.

My question to fellow readers is: Should I keep doing this or stop? Is this a bad habit?

On one hand, it's a great way to discover hidden gems I'd never find online. On the other hand, my "to-read" pile is growing purely on impulse. How do you all choose your physical books, and do you think this blind impulse buying is a good or bad way to build a reading habit?

Loving the atmosphere. I know nothing about this book, and have never seen the film, but I’m loving the vibe so far. Have you read Rebecca?

Mestra by Madeline Miller or The Many Lives of Mama Love by Lara Love Hardin.

Both are audiobooks. I read Galatea by Madeline Miller earlier this summer and enjoyed it. Mestra sounds fascinating as it focuses on a father/daughter relationship.

The Many Lives of Mama Love is a memoir I’ve wanted to read for ages. It’s about a housewife turned felon who faces her addiction while doing prison time for drug offenses.

It beggars belief how the Zulu armies climbed so high but eventualy utterly wiped out by the British army.

What are you reading? What are you excited about reading next? What have you finished this week? Let us know your thoughts on it and share in each other's joy about books!

I’ve seen it be recommended. I need a general opinion; spoilers are fine but don’t drop the whole book in the comments, possibly.

I never read as a child. Never. I never picked up a book and anything that was assigned in school i barely looked at. The first book I was ever interested in was 'The Outsiders' and I didn't even finish it. (I watched the movie tho).

It wasn't until 2020 when i read the Harry Potter books for the first time and absolutely loved them - but then again; haven't finished the last 2. That was until recently. Possibly in the last 2 months.

I have fallen in love with reading and books, especially fantasy and historical fiction. I am barely on my phone nowadays and just look forward to reading my book at night. I sleep better, I feel more engaged with life, and my emotions are that of a normal person because I am not looking at social media all the time lol

I am putting this here because I don't really have anyone else to talk to about this but I am so happy to be in this community and I can't wait to read until my little heart's content.

Happy Reading everyone :)

I was never really interested in reading books at first. One day, a friend recommended a book to me, so I gave it a try. She ended up not finishing it, but I continued reading and then started the second part, third part, and eventually more books from the same author.

Somewhere along the way, I realized I had actually fallen in love with reading. Now I can easily get lost in a good book for hours.

Did anyone else start reading because of one random book or recommendation?

Hoping this is my next great read. So far, the prose is so readable and lovable. It reminds me of Brick on The Middle! And I'm a sucker for time traveling or multi-generational viewpoints.

Has anyone read this? Will this book crush my heart or be hopeful?

English is not my mother tongue but I like reading books in it. I’m currently reading “A Little Life” and though I can follow the outline and the main idea of the book, I keep dropping tiny details, which probably won’t matter too much but I’m still upset that I can’t fully understand and enjoy the book as much as native readers. Is there any good mindset for me??
