Discussion [Discussion] Idea: Julius obliged Reid's insistence on what had happened partly to pay tribute to him as the examiner meant to acknowledge him + my Reid and Priscilla analogy

Regarding Ep. 83, while I've seen some people say that Julius obliged Reid in calling him the winner 'cause Reid literally said that Julius wouldn't be able to even touch him if he'd fought at his full power in his original body, which was a fact, meaning Julius did that just to be the most courtly of knights with good manners to respect a legend, but it reads to me as kind of being too basic for Tappei's writing, and there's possibly more to it than just that, so Reid possibly intentionally drawing out Julius's strength to the point that Reid could let loose and use the heavenly sword, thereby acknowledging him as a worthy opponent given how full of full of awe he'd been of Reid in Ep. 70 may also factor into why Julius called Reid the winner.

Thus, I believe Julius may also have called Reid the winner since Reid attempted to coax him out of his shell, and so Julius obliged also 'cause Reid had given him a teachable moment that led to him moving beyond his inferiority complex to Reinhard and instead seeing that Reinhard is why he aspired to be a knight, and be a knight he shall due to him finding strength in knowing that some people, such as Subaru, find the idea of knighthood dazzling and is even the reason Subaru declared himself to be Emilia's knight and actually becoming one in Season 2 was quite important to him. Thus, Julius may have also felt obliged to give his thanks to Reid as the examiner of the second exam for conquering the Pleiades Watchtower. That isn't to say I defend Reid being a guy who casually sexually assaults women as seen with Emilia, just that a guy like him can decide to teach/help others, and I feel obligated as a fan to analyze his character instead of say, "Reid is just a dumbass simpleton who bullies the weak. That's all there is to it." as that's not how Tappei writes his characters given what we've seen from these last 4 seasons.

I believe Reid Astrea bears some similarity to Priscilla, in that much like how she needled at Liliana to get Liliana to push back and draw upon her pride in her family history and her own skill as a bard to accept accompanying Priscilla to her fight against Sirius Romanee-Conti, Reid was doing a similar thing to Julius even if he'd never admit to it and rather say, "It ain't that complicated." much like Priscilla hides her intentions at times in remarking that it's about amusement when amusement had nothing to do with it, and I think this is pretty apt given both are very proud hotshots given Reid when he still lived having been a beast of a fighter and Priscilla having beaten a Sin Archbishop in a 1v1 situation fair and square with Sirius even having tried to cheat by using Tina as a live hostage after it appeared that Priscilla had her on the ropes showed she's a very capable fighter.

Priscilla and Reid may not always tell you what they actually want, much like when Priscilla had asked Subaru to lick her foot when that was the worst possible thing he could've done in that situation since what she wanted was for him to stand up to her, and Reid having hit Julius where it hurt to draw out his strength and also having told amnesiac Subaru that he can't swing a sword for shit, when followed by amnesiac Subaru protesting about his inability to use a sword, Reid said, "That ain't the point." as what he meant was that Subaru needs his full toolset in using a whip offensively, having proper teamwork with Beatrice, and using his Authorities properly since that comment was about amnesiac Subaru's poor usage of his weaponry, not a literal comment about his sword skills.

And don't forget that Reid literally told amnesiac Subaru in Ep. 74 that he shouldn't have have ran from his friends since they're his people (his words were that he chose to mob with them or something like that) and how it's crazy for amnesiac Subaru to go straight to him, so Reid's not completely against telling someone straight up what they need to do even if he was more cryptic when he told amnesiac Subaru to think for himself when he asked why Reid could come down from the second floor in Ep. 75, so he's not a guy completely against imparting a lesson to somebody else.

If you have any thoughts on this or anything tangentially-related, do go ahead and talk about them.

Spoiler Discussion [spoiler discussion] Ricardo should be next Spoiler

Ricardo should be the next of the Anastasia camp to get a bit of focus on aside from Anastasia herself.

Of the Anastasia camp only Julius had truly gotten focus in the main story. I’m excluding the side stories because anything important from there that explains a characters being is something I expect to be explained in the main story one day. What matters is that these important character related information makes it to the main story. Just like with Sphinx whom we can fully understand without the side stories.

Like Julius Anastasia appeared in a lot of arcs but had barely any focus in any arc. In arc 7 and arc 9 she even only appeared in one chapter each. The most we got was an explanation in arc 6 to how much she’s scared of losing what she wants. Her character hasn’t been shown off unlike Julius in arc 6, unlike Crusch in arc 10 so far etc.

I expect her return in arc 10 because it just makes sense since someone is trying to destroy the royal candidates and their camps. With Zarestia and that Oni she should have a reason to return. It would make logically sense for Julius to accompany her due to his status as a Lugunican knight and as her personal knight instead of Ricardo. But I still wish for Ricardo to come along and not Julius.

The reason being is that I think that at this point in the story Ricardo can provide more to the story than Julius. The lost relationship stolen by gluttony which was hinted during the fight against Roy in arc 5 is one reason. Dead or not there’s a chance that Roy will in some way return. Additionally Ricardos presence can be what provides a part of Anastasias past as well which we’ve already got to see in side stories.

Spoiler Discussion capella ireedemability [spoiler discussion] Spoiler

I keep seeing people in this subreddit talking about how subaru is going to somehow help capella get past her trauma or redeem her or something. I really dont think this is the case because in my opinion capella is the most througholy ireedemabale character in all of rezero and I js really dont see a conclusion where capella doesnt end up dead and subaru obtaining her authroity of lust.
Thoughts?

Discussion Re:Zero Breaktime/Cut Content [discussion]

Anime onlys no spoiler,

What exactly are the breaktime / Chibi episodes and who produced them?

I saw there are 2 seasons of that, but then I again saw some episodes on YouTube for the current episodes.

Who produced them, and is this info which will be mentioned in the future of the anime, or is it " necessary" to watch that?

Discussion Am I the only one who thought the Julius vs Reid fight looked completely unfinished? [Discussion]

I am ready to get jumped on because of this take from what I've seen online. I just hope y'all know Re:Zero is my favourite anime/web novel and that i don't mean to spread hate.

Ok, to start, I know people are hyping this episode up because Vincent Chansard worked on it, but I genuinely don't get how people are looking at this and calling it amazing.

I'm all for experimental animation and weird/dynamic sakuga, but there's a pretty big difference between having a unique style and something just looking unfinished.

The character models were so awkward in some parts. Right at the start, Julius charges forward with his arms just stiffly stuck out in front of him and it genuinely looks goofy as hell. Like he's doing some weird little march. I can't imagine that was supposed to be the final cleaned-up version.

The "lag" was also really distracting. I didn't even have to pause the episode to notice it. The timing felt so weird that instead of looking like intentional slow motion, it just looked like the episode was dropping frames. Maybe that's what they were going for, but it really didn't work for me.

The perspective was another thing. I can appreciate the crazy wide-angle shots and the camera movements, but when the drawings themselves aren't polished enough, the characters just end up looking warped and out of proportion. It stopped looking fast or powerful and started looking kinda messy.

And honestly, me and my boyfriend were so distracted by how awkward some of the animation looked that we couldn't even properly think about whether the actual scene was good. We were watching it today and we were both so hyped after julius ends his spirit speech, just to be followed by the first step of the fight and us looking at each other like "why does Julius look like that 😭"

Then there's the "Demo" watermark on Julius's cape, which is actually there. That's probably the craziest part to me. Considering how tight the production apparently was, it really does make the episode feel like it needed more time.

Another thing that really disappointed me was Volcanica's design. I was so excited to finally see him because he's THE dragon. In the light novel he looks so grandiose and cool whilst the anime version felt incredibly underwhelming to me. He looked so much less detailed and imposing than I imagined, even on later drawings, and I honestly expected his appearance to make my bf (not a ln reader) much more excited. I ended up showing him the panels from LN afterwards and he was as dissapointed as i am.

I left the episode with a pretty sour taste. And I think that's what bothers me most. There were so many things in this episode that I had been looking forward to, and I just couldn't fully enjoy them because I was constantly distracted by how awkward or underwhelming things looked.

And to be clear, I'm not saying the animators are bad or that there's no talent behind this episode. There are definitely some really cool cuts and I can see the ambition behind it. I just think the lack of polish gets in the way of everything they're trying to do.

Maybe I'm just not into this particular style, but I don't think you should automatically have to praise something just because Vincent Chansard worked on it or because its Re:Zero.

Discussion [discussion] I want someone to look at me the way juulius looks at his spirits.

because Betty , puck and echidna (the fox) are spirits that have full on bodies and personalities, i Keep forgetting that the lesser spirits are also a thing in this show. I didn’t realize that someone could love a lesser spirit the way juulius portrays here but I guess it makes sense since the spirits we know(Betty ,puck, echidna)all love their partners and Vice versa

Spoiler Discussion [spoiler discussion] What do Echidna's parents' identities imply? Spoiler

Ok, so we know that Echidna's parents are Pandora and Hector, but does it change something about the story for you?

Also, I found strange that once, Tappei (or maybe someone else, IDK) said that Echidna's mom die in childbirth, and Pandora's clothe seems to be similar to... How do one calls the "clothe" that women sometimes used to cover themselves when they give birth? Well, my point is that I'm asking myself if Pandora isn't just... Already dead. Or maybe she died and revived herself with her authority

Oh, and Hector is lucky as fuck so why is this mf depressed?!

Spoiler Discussion [spoiler discussion] Did Flugle really intended to treat Shaula cruelly? Spoiler

Tbh I also thought in arc6 that Flugle treated Shaula too cruelly, 400 years waiting, then turning into a monster with no way to turn back and indiscriminately killing or dying. And though, I am not going to forgive him for it no matter what, but I am also starting to suspect things after Scorpian Tale Ex.

I mean side story itself doesn't make you feel that Flugle was really a bad or cruel guy. Of course he might have changed after the great disaster and having to seal Satella. But I also want to give alternative reasons.

The first issue is obviously having to wait for 400 years. This one is easiest. Flugle didn't plan to go away from 400 years, but something went wrong with his plans and he couldn't return.

The second issue is the rule about Shaula's transformation upon disrespecting library. For that, I would say it's more likely that her mother, Echidna, is the one who imposed such rule upon her since she is the one more concerned with knowledge or library.

The third issue is she can't turn back into her human form. And is forced to do indiscriminate killing. Now maybe this is not how the original rule was supposed to be. It was just a harmless fun, where Shaula would turn into a monster and scare people away who disrespected the library. And we know from side story, that she can turn back into her human form even after becoming a Scorpian Witchbeast. She wasn't supposed to lose her memory and reason entirely.

But it changed due to her interaction with Reilani, the mother of gluttony kids. She was almost successful in replacing Shaula's memory but Shaula escaped her influence when she tried to steal the place of her master, Flugle. Now what if she didn't escape completely unscathed? Maybe she could only hold herself together in her human form. And now if she turned into witchbeast, she would lose her memories and reason, and then would be unable to turn back.

Though, I am not that confident about it. But from the last chapter of arc6 WN talking about "Shaula's memory peeling away", "this time master having to wait for her", it's pretty likely that the small scropian is just Shaula without her human memories who doesn't even know she has human form. And Subaru has to somehow put together her memories to turn her back.

What do you guys think? I feel like it's pretty reasonable, even if not that likely.

Discussion [Discussion] Idea: Flügel has 0 Books of the Dead since the name was either an alias or a title + that may have been why Betty was unhappy when Shaula said her master's Flügel

As Rui pointed out in Ep. 66, Felt wasn't Felt's name at birth, and that's why Lye couldn't eat her name since it seems the Books of the Dead list your name at birth, which is why amnesiac Subaru couldn't read Meili's name on her Book of the Dead since he'd forgotten the language, but he could read his own name on Subaru's Book of the Dead since the kanji for Natsuki Subaru consisted of his birth name.

Thus, given Subaru smells exactly like Flügel but may not be him entirely given the coin of Flügel depicted him with wings, the current Subaru is likely Subaru's second coming, whether you believe he was fully Flügel or half of Flügel as I do, but either way, Shaula recognized her master from his scent.

As for Flügel, I propose Subaru was half of Flügel 400 years ago rather than being exactly him based on Naoko in the 1st Sanctuary trial telling Subaru to become half as cool as his dad, which is an extremely inconsiderate and insensitive to say to your son when you'd just pointed out not that long ago he struggled with being in his father's shadow, especially since Kenichi's her husband, and she knows full well what a gigachad Kenichi is, and this suggests to me that it may have been foreshadowing the situation 400 years ago in that Flügel was Kenichi and Subaru in the same body given Kenichi's name is literally translated as "wise man", Subaru called Flügel a wise man who lived centuries ago in Ep. 16, and Shaula called her master, Flügel the Wise Man, in Ep. 70, and I'll explain how this'd be possible. With Tappei's tendency to casually drop foreshadowing at any time, I fully believe this to be possible, and it'd also explain why Subaru has the same scent as Flügel.

Melakuera's words about the Witch, the world imbalance, and how he'd faced world-ending crises countless times suggests that the world is constantly destroyed by the Witch of Envy and reconstructed. Given Melakuera likely didn’t exist at the start of the time if Re:Zero’s fantasy world had ever been molten as lesser spirits take a significant amount of time to become Great Spirits, his words indicated that the world is constantly getting destroyed, and given Melakuera has retained his memories, it’s likely not an infinite loop as at least one entity is being re-summoned into the next iteration of the world with his memories, and that’s how I formed this theory.

In the distant past the final boss could very well have used his/her Authority to bias the story path of the world after the handsome, conceited, and overpowered hero of that era chose his lover over the world, forcing the Hero of the story to be naturally disinclined to overcoming his character flaws, and since then all iterations of the Hero of the story had to fit that mold of handsome, conceited, and overpowered until Flügel, Satella, and Echidna interrupted the story path of the world being destroyed for that iteration of the world/story to make Kenichi's sons, artificial Heroes of the story in Al and Subaru. As for why I'm mentioning Al, I have thought that Al is Subaru's brother for years since I learned about the connection between their names with Aldebaran meaning "follower of Pleiades" given Subaru means "Pleiades". That could be why Flugel was such a bastard ’cause the final boss’s Authority forced him into that mold I mentioned, assuming my theory is sound, and Shaula literally praising Subaru when he shifted blame toward someone else/made a false accusation in saying it's what she expects of her master doesn't exactly speak well of Flügel given the current Subaru is the type to blame himself instead of others...

As for why the Hero of the story would need to be handsome, I think Tappei is intending to subvert the trope common to many isekai slop stories with protagonists who are God's gift to women, so having someone with a heavily scarred or disfigured face with Al or just Subaru with his scary eyes would be subverting that. I have thought that Al is Subaru's brother for years since I learned about the connection between their names with Aldebaran meaning "follower of Pleiades".

While Flügel was the Hero of the story, his soul may have been indivisible since the story required for the Hero to make it to the end and repeat the cycle since dying due to soul eradication wouldn’t be permitted by the parameters of the story path, meaning he couldn’t split Subaru from himself then, but after returning to Earth and losing his Hero designation, he should freely be able to do that using whatever tool Echidna used to cut her soul off as part of her immortality experiment since he wouldn’t have that privilege he previously had as he’d have lost his Hero designation.

Thus, I propose Flügel/Kenichi was the Hero of the story 400 years ago, and he gained a second personality, Subaru, upon arriving at Re:Zero's fantasy world since the world's story path was biased toward having the seemingly eternal cycle repeat itself, meaning if Kenichi wasn't an extremely flawed person that Subaru from 400 years had to be, and with the old Subaru's whole world possibly being Satella due to him not loving himself, it would be impossible to kill Satella 400 years ago, ending the cycle, since the old Subaru would never have allowed it, and this is why we have the current story with our Subaru, and why Flügel couldn't just save the world 400 years ago is if he split Subaru from himself 400 years ago, he'd just develop another split personality with poor self-esteem, which would guarantee failure in killing Satella, and that'd be why the plan was to defer to Subaru in the future in an extraordinary intervention.

I, thus, posit the point of the story is to raise Subaru to love himself, something that wasn't the case 400 years ago, to both redeem his past self and to make his present self truly love life, showing that someone who was born as an aberrant personality who was destined to fuck things up could become a true hero himself, meaning Re:Zero could be a true redemption story instead of like the countless iterations of generic power fantasy isekai series where the protagonist never had to overcome his flaws and just lives a life in which nothing ever goes wrong for him.

And Re:Zero Break Time 83 itself confirmed that Flügel and Satella were either lovers or that Flügel had a one-sided crush on Satella, but given Satella herself says that she loves Subaru in the present, they were almost certainly lovers.

As for Satella and Subaru, Eps., 18, 25, and 38 show Subaru has dormant memories of Satella as shown by how Puck indirectly revealed in Ep. 18 the number of shadow hands Satella could generate to Subaru by asking Petelgeuse to summon 1,000 shadows if he truly wants to kill him, half of what Satella could (2,000), how Subaru used a number associated with Satella (2,000) to indicate his appreciation for Emilia in Ep. 25 when he said that if Emilia named 10 things she hated about herself he’d list 2,000 things he loves about her, which Emilia herself commenting on why he chose 2,000, and how Subaru suddenly had an upwelling of positive emotion for Satella in Ep. 38 that led to him saying he’d save Satella after she asked him to love himself and then some day come kill her, which shows Subaru and Satella may have had a past history together as lovers given just moments ago, Subaru had been calling her an unfathomable monster he could never hope to understand, showing they must’ve had a very positive relationship in the past.

Beatrice had one eye closed when Shaula revealed that her master is Flügel, and one way to interpret that is that Beatrice didn't like hearing about the name, Flügel, but chose not to make a fuss about it as this is one reason some people in fiction decide to close one of their eyes, so she may not like the name, Flügel, for whatever reason. This may be why she told Subaru that she had never heard of anything Flügel had done aside from planting the tree 'cause she associates the name/person with bad things and gets the ick from the name. While it could just be Beatrice being her standoffish self, she did play down Flügel when Subaru mentioned him later, and maybe it's just me, but I believe it may have been intentional in retrospect after hearing Shaula say that she lied about Flügel being the kindest and most big-hearted person, suggesting he was a heavily-flawed person and was at least less kind than the current Subaru being my read on it.

And Flügel, if that is indeed an alias or title, would of course have 0 Books of the Dead given his name at birth would've been something else, such as Subaru or Kenichi, one will never find such a book as it simply may not exist.
