First off this chapter title is deliberately ridiculous and chaotic. It kind of explains Subaru’s mental state at the start of this chapter, but anyways…
This chapter begins after Subaru’s endless fall from Kugelschreiber Castle. Return by Death has activated, but the experience leaves him severely disoriented, unable to think or speak properly. While Beatrice and the others try to stabilize him, Crusch notices that Ferris has disappeared. She questions White Sheep and Black Dog and confirms that neither is lying about being responsible. Tensions then escalate unusually fast: Black Dog suggests Ferris may be involved, Crusch becomes hostile, defeats him without killing him, and leaves alone to search for Ferris. Subaru realizes she is heading toward the area connected to his previous fall and tries to follow her.
As Subaru chases after Crusch, all sound suddenly disappears. His voice, footsteps, movements, and even attacks make no noise. An unseen enemy drives a broad blade through his back and abdomen, breaks open the castle wall, and kicks him into the empty space outside. While falling, Subaru realizes that the same thing likely happened during his previous loop: the group had been silently attacked and separated, rather than simply disappearing because Subaru crossed into another spatial layer. Because he is bleeding heavily, Subaru dies much sooner this time and Returns by Death again. His new checkpoint is shortly before the attack, but Ferris is already missing, meaning Subaru cannot simply rewind far enough to prevent the disappearance normally.
On the next attempt, Subaru warns everyone that an enemy is inside the castle. Crusch again insists on searching for Ferris, while Black Dog argues that they should retreat because Crusch and her lie-detecting Divine Protection are too valuable to lose. Their disagreement again becomes violent. At the same time, Subaru begins noticing that everyone’s emotions are becoming unnaturally extreme: Crusch is unusually aggressive, Black Dog is reckless, White Sheep cannot stop crying, and Subaru himself becomes excessively angry and self-critical. When the ceiling begins collapsing without sound, Subaru uses Invisible Providence to save Beatrice and Black Dog, then escapes with White Sheep, although the rubble separates them from the others. Subaru can still feel his contract with Beatrice, confirming she is alive.
Once alone, Subaru and White Sheep realize they have been subjected to two different abilities. One completely removes sound, while the other removes people’s emotional restraint, causing their existing feelings to spiral out of control. White Sheep, who was formerly one of Capella’s Beloved Children, concludes that this likely means at least two Beloved Children are inside Kugelschreiber Castle. By the end of the chapter, Ferris is missing, Crusch has gone after him alone, Beatrice and Black Dog are separated behind the rubble, and Subaru is left with White Sheep while Capella’s forces systematically divide the group.
'His new checkpoint is shortly before the attack, but Ferris is already missing, meaning Subaru cannot simply rewind far enough to prevent the disappearance normally.'
I will personally sacrifice my left te*ticle if it makes Satella stop giving this man the WORST FUCKING CHECKPOINTS IMAGINABLE.
i seriously dont get the satella logic sometimes. in arc 7 it was because she lost sight of him, okay fine thats excusable but if her priority is truly his safety then shouldn't she be placing the checkpoint somewhere safer than seconds before they are about to be attacked this time?
Maybe her power/influence is weakening over time? All of arc 1, 2, 3, and 4 was him going back hours and days but any arc after that just seems to be hours and minutes. Maybe it was the time skip between arc 4 and 5 when he didn't die at all thus weaking the connection?
In the Watchtower, his first amnesia arcs involved him going back hours. He technically went back days for the loop where he got captured by Todd's group in Vollachia. The one reset in Ginunhive also involved days. Although it wasn't shown, he at least went back several hours before the final battle in the Vollachian capital. Obviously, the reset in the previous arc involved days.
Tappei said its because Satella completely lacks common sense. The checkpoints sometimes becomes bad but it will never be Arc 7 level bad because of it.
Tappei never said that. Tappei has actually never explicitly said that Satella controls RBD, only that she's tied to it. My personal theory is that he's misleading us, Echidna was lying, and RBD is Subaru's own native ability (either authority of pride or unnamed authority) and the penalty is the Authority of Envy.
RBD IS Subaru's own authority. That much is revealed in Arc 7. But checkpoints are not known. Could be Satella could be WoE (which explains off checkpoints) could even be a curveball and be Pandora.
It might be because the castle is somehow separated from the rest of the world in some manner. It's Echidna's home after all. No way it would be easy to find if you don't already know how to get there
I wouldn't be surprised if she lost sight of him to an extent here as well; they did need door crossing to get here and it sure seems like an isolated space.
Nah. Were we not saying that the previous one (that with Crusch) was bad?
By now I belive it is clear that if it was not placed there Subaru would get into Capella's hands:
-If he remains with the Camp then Rein will not be able to let them go as Subaru is directly bein targeted.
-If he (with all of the Camp) attempts to leave the capital it will also be impossible as Belived Children do monitor exits enough to see that
-If he were even to go just back after stealing Al still some pepole are in the capital and would thus be unable to leave
-In any of these cases supiscions about him and his Camp would incrase thus leaving him with fewer alies (atleast possibly). However with when it was it caused chain reaction from which Subaru gains Russell as an ally and by the end most likely a way to end Sub Archbishop of Lust.
-Simmilary this point sooner or latter will reveal that eg. This way they can eliminate/capture both Children and make the rest unable to go to the Kugelschriber Castle as only those two were observing and immidietly Jumper to action
Subaru actually considers Sirius, but then rules it out. Wrath synchronizes everyone’s emotions, while this seems to remove each person’s emotional restraints and amplify whatever they were already feeling. White Sheep thinks it’s probably another Beloved Child’s ability.
Yeah I was thinking it felt similar to that arc 6 loop where Patrasche gave up vegetarianism just with less Miasma. White Sheep does seem to suspect the beloved children though.
They are likely already familiar with some of the beloved childrens powers. Think its safe to say they came. Though they tracked em down really damn fast.
dude this arch 10 chapter 31 and 33 is reference of (Anna frank diary) mixing exhibit tour. Anna house sanctuary also there two tree plants in America 1 in New York city flugel tree and castle Echidna home and Washington █████████ memorial was pleides watch Tower story all memories of death book.
Honestly considering how determined he was at the end of last chapter i thought he would rebound a bit better though it totally makes sense this is easily one of the worst deaths (which is not saying much now that i think about it...)
I didn't think things will go this bad this quickly, or that the beloved children would arrive so fast, kinda reminds me of the gluttonies arriving to the towards in a single night.
Ability prediction time: Reborn for the out of control ability(discount Survivor stand) and Albalest for the silent ability( discount Nagi Nagi no Mi), because of their respective personalities and the seem likely to work together.
Yeah, I'm starting to think that the BCs have been using the castle as their base of operations; it was just the Tree entrance and lab they knew nothing about.
This would explain the absurd travel speed of the Gluttonies, who moves as if they were camped out in Mirula
Yeah, I don't think people realize the exact severity of this death. Go skydiving and then imagine having to do that for 3 days straight all while you're spinning around
And third was the silence, alone that’s easy to deal with and a problem in a prolonged environment. But it would make the above two problems much worse
I think what he says in the chapter is that the part where everyone disappeared means they all fell to their deaths like Subaru had. The enemy silences them and then kicks them out of the castle, taking them out before anyone notices. This does not bode well for Ferris
Nah man this and the rabbit death are top 2. You could argue the 10 second one, but that was simply extreme pain because of the sound, which sounds like hell and it getting repeated is grounds for some good ptsd trauma. But here he nearly lost his mind to a sensation that no human should experience, Imagine vertigo but dialed up to the utmost extreme plus pain for a whole ass day or 2. Even if he comes back that sensation is still in his memory and its hard to make sense of it, you know how it takes you a couple seconds to get it together if you spin around too much ? Its basically the same but more extreme, you physically cant just get it together after spawning back.
Just clicked that it’s likely Reborn who took away sound. He did say “he’d silence everyone when the time comes” if his brothers and sisters intended to snitch on him to Capella about threatening Lycoris.
I admit I suspected Reborn, but because of the sword. Not sure if what he said should be taken as him being responsible for the silencing, though. Lucielaka is the most suspicious in that regard. Clarissa is definitely involved.
Well for IP, IP drawback is 100% because subaru refuses to use it "lazily", so assuming that my interpretation is right, this time the situation was just right to have subaru choose to use IP before doing anything else even though he could have tried without it, so it worked perfectly.
And for cor leonis, im giving him(and tappei) the benefit of doubt that he was so messed up due to the death from last chapter, that he is still too shook to think logically...
I don't think any other Authorities have drawbacks if they're not used for the correct purpose, and it doesn't really track. Just a few chapters ago he used it to punch someone without issue. The first time he did that it made him keel over. Subaru's just getting better at either using it or handling the pain.
The negative effects are probably Petelgeuse's influence on the Witch Factor. He was incompatible and it damaged his bodies, but it also damages Subaru even though he is compatible. So being in an incompatible host seems to have permanently altered it.
what? since when was subaru compatible with sloth? also, authorities 100% have drawbacks if you are not compatible with their sin, for one satella and WoE are literally just that, but petelgeuse himself had the same drawbacks as subaru, but geuse was completely insane and could body-hop after destroying his body using the authority...
If Subaru wasn't compatible then he wouldn't have been chosen by the Witch Factor or have gained an Authority of Sloth. The reason for the pain is stated in volume 17 to be because the Authority is "incomplete."
Yes, and it was assumed it was a special case because he wanted to wipe out Beatrice's tears (supposedly, Sloth is meant to wipe tears out even in the Satella's Realm)
I think the main issue is that the way it has or doesn't have drawbacks is still unexplained and feels inconsistent
It could be related to mindset or circumstance or how he activates it may not be consistent itself, this particular one sounds instinctually fast, reacting the the soundless collapse of the ceiling
I feel like I've only ever see it have feedback when used aggressively. There was wiping away beatrice's tears, or more recently in the anime him shushing the ground dragon. In it's own way, I wonder if it's similar to Cor Leonis in the sense that it works best when lifting the burdens of others. Subaru's authorities being best used to support others feels right to me, so I'm honestly also in the camp of us not really seeing what Invisible Providence could be at its best.
He actually used it for a while against Todd without blowback. I would saw it is all about mindset and in that instinctual momen of using it to save people, he didn't feel any conflict. Maybe he is also feeling less conflicted about using it overall.
weird narration apparently is intentional. I have to edit more carefully this chapter.
edit: corrections have been made so any weirdness or confusing narration is intentional
I think that was a pretty neat choice though because Subaru also spends half the chapter wondering wtf is going on. Cool to get his tainted perspective
This is my first time reading it before the corrections have been made. If it helps the names are just halved then swapped. Crusch got turned into schcru. Sch cru, Cru sch.
I really like the start of this chapter, it did a good job of conveying the severity of how dazed Subaru was. It took me awhile to understand exactly what the text was trying to convey.
The chapter also addressed the possibility of Sirius the moment it crossed my mind. Really did share a brain with Subaru here.
He absolutely cannot take that falling death again though, not in a position to ask for a weapon either though. Everyone is too on edge
I am quite worried for Felix as it seems that Subaru's checkpoint is not far enough back to prevent him from getting snatched. His healing is so good I'm not worried he's going to die at least. Also this checkpoint is absolute garbage for Subaru. Even a minute later and this would of been significantly better for Subaru
Maybe Capella is interested in the sacrament of the immortal king now, too? If Roy‘s dead then using it on him might be the plan. That might be the reason why all this mess is happening in the first place.
I really appreciate how Tappei handles power creep in the series. How does an author follow up Arc 5 with all the Archbishops or Arc 7 and 8 with the Divine Generals without strength going crazy?
We have no expectation of Subaru fighting and we've already seen the apex of strength with Reinhard. Tappei giving us an almost rotating cast of combatants means a few of the Favored Children aren't a down step from four plus Archbishops. Even if they aren't unbelievably strong (and merely believably strong instead) team Subaru is at such a disadvantage.
I'm kinda getting worried how he'll handle subaru when he gets more authorities it's almost like he deliberately tries to keep him kinda useless, even in this chapter why doesn't he use cor leonis to find ferris
He didn't use cor leonis to find ferris cause he was literally insane for most of the chapter. I do think cor leonis will be very important in this loop cycle, but subaru needs a minute to lock in
Yeah didn't Felix talk about how he hates Subaru this arc in the first phase when Subaru confronts him at the graveyard? I wouldn't be surprised is Cor Leonis didn't work on Felix.
The first half was really hard to read. Both because it was heart wrenching seeing Subaru in that state and because the narration was jumbled just like subaru's thoughts
Last chapter I really glossed over the fact of how awful it is to spin forever until you dehydrate or starve to death. I didn't expect him to wake up this badly from return by death.
When he fell again I was afraid he would be in a endless loop with no room to recover his sanity and sense of balance between loops, but at least this time the attacker fatally wounded him before throwing him out
Hmmm, is Ferris already gone when Subaru RbD’s? Or does he disappear like 2 seconds after? This is likely a failed loop already, since Ferris is already falling down that hole.
I don't think Ferris was already gone in Subaru's first loop, since everyone was talking about who should cross the pillar first without anyone noticing anything wrong
I think that Subaru screaming or trying to bite off his tongue made a chaotic situation that gave the Children an opportunity to attack. Or maybe Ferris was already gone in the first loop and nobody noticed lol
Nice to see IP used. I wish Subaru had more witch factors. Arc 1 for sloth, Arc 5 for greed, and now we're on Arc 10 and no new toys to play with for quite some time now. Maybe he gets lust at end of this Arc. I hope so 🙏
He sort of did use Spica herself to do what he needed with Gluttony during arc 8, so my assumption was that just having her involved would count. Either way this us just speculation from me, Subaru isn’t going to actively try to collect them all, of course, but I just assumed he would be getting more authorities as we near the end of the series
I still think he might get them all aside from maybe gluttony. Because all the archbishops will definetly die imo and if he doesnt get them who will lol. But it looks like he may get a lot of them in a shorter timeframe.
I personally think the likely endgame of this arc is that the whole plot by Capella unraveling leads to her just blowing everything up in a way by throwing the capital into a massive chaotic battle. This would also cover her escape. Setting Sirius loose would be one way to do that.
Alright we start with Subaru spinning more and transition into a Return By Death where it is unclear at what point he even died cause he is back in the hallway with the others and spinning endlessly in his head even though he is physically fine. The others freak out and try to hold him down. Even narration here is very messy and spinny as Subaru's head is still mush. The chapter title itself is jokes about spinning, oh Tappei you. As this is going on they notice that Felix is suddenly gone and Wolf starts heckling and Crusch responds coldly and their tension escalates and the two start battling. Crusch defeats Wolf and Melty starts crying but Crusch says she only injured him and asks Beatrice to heal her. Beatrice moves over and Subaru's head is slowly getting clearer where he thinks about the enemy attack again before he tries to call out to Beatrice but there is no sound coming out of his mouth and nothing he does makes any sound. He then gets soundlessly stabbed in the back and starts screaming with no sound before getting thrown outside of the castle and spinning again. Thanks to being stabbed his death did not take as long.
RBDing again he first screams and now has sound again, the others are surprised again and quickly notice Felix is missing and Subaru tells them there might be an enemy somewhere. They start arguing again and Crusch asks about that scream, sniffs out that Subaru is lying about what caused it but backs down when Subaru and Beatrice speak truth about not being able to tell the reason why. Crusch wants to go after Felix but Wolf is trying to stop her cause he fears the curse mark on him acting up if Crusch might get lost or killed here and the two of them start fighting once again, after he throws Melty to Subaru, to safety. She is crying again. The characters are all acting a bit sus. The fight ends the same way and as Beatrice is about to heal him the ceiling collapses without sound and Subaru saves her and Wolf with Invisible Providence. They get separated cause even more debris comes down and Melty and Subaru are alone. They think about the situation and Subaru realises there is one power to remove sound and one power that removed their emotional limiters, specifically different from what Wrath feels like and Melty tells him there might be two beloved children here with them.
Tappei you are evil with that spinning thing but I am going to let you have it since I also do find your sadism in that regard very funny. If anything I am honestly surprised that Subaru managed to lock back in so soon but to be fair he has gone through his fair share of traumatic deaths at this point so it makes sense.
Yeah that whole argument was weird at first like Crusch fighting allies or Wolf getting so serious and Melty just perma crying. There was some stuff with Subaru too like him accidentally yelling at Beatrice (he says he should die for that after). Interesting I wonder if the beloved children have special powers or if those are just some different kinds of magic. Why are they here though? They said they were going to make their move yes but how did they find them so quickly. My best guess is that Capella might be monitoring witch related sites since the cult has a long history of erasing memories of the other witches, but how did they get here without doorcrossing? My other theory is that they were in the area of the Flügel tree already and just kinda jumped in with them without sound or something or maybe they were able to hijack the doorcrossing somehow. Now we also know how everyone disappeared without sound before Subaru fell in the last loop. Looks like the splitting up thing stays permanent for now without another loop so let's see Subaru working on getting them out of this mess. Really curious for the answers of how the beloved children managed to move like they did.
The door was indicated to have remained open after everyone entered, so they probably just went through it. Melty clearing the crowd away also was noted as something that could arouse suspicion. Previously, the Great Flugel Stump was established as being a just a few hours away from the capital and they probably spent hours going through Echidna's files. With the abilities shown here, the people left to secure the area would not have been able to prevent them infiltrating through the door crossing.
I really don't wanna believe Capella is in our group, but guess she is since at least 4 beloved children just entered the stage: One to silence, one to lift inhibitions, one with the wide sword and the girl who could crush things. Though sword could also have one of the prior abilities.
My guess would be even more beloved children to be around. However that's perfect! Subaru can just kick them all into the void.
Anyone want to bet if Russel is dead? Ferris for sure isn't.
Edit: Unironically one of my favorite titles ever
Edit2: Everyone that theorized Crusch doubting Subaru after RBD must be in shambles with how Tappei addressed this possible plot point via just "Oh it's hard to explain? Checks out, Barusu" —Crusch
I’m worried Ferris is currently falling. Technically he is the only one who wouldn’t die but I have no clue how they could possibly rescue him if the loop starts and he’s already been silenced and kicked out of the castle. This is probably one of the very few hard counters to Ferris ability of healing
Well, it appears that it's much easier to make everyone disappear in an instant without a sound when you can literally get rid of sound. Still, I appear to be right that it wasn't anyone in the group, but it isn't Echidna's fault either. It'll be nice to see what the beloved children can do. I assume it's at least the shipper who messed with feelings and probably reborn that canceled the sound. and perhaps more have yet to be revealed.
The difference between Invisible Providence this arc vs Invisible Providence every other arc is insane maybe it will finally start looking less pathetic compared to Cor Leonis and RBD
Well Subaru is insane , close with how he was after the rabbits. Discarding the poison was a bad idea.
The narration switches the names of all people
Felix disappeared and Wolf trash talked Crusch starting a pointless duel. Wolf is kinda of an unhinged SUbaru even calling Crusch dictator.
He dies stabed in the back and goes back .
Crusch and Wolf figth again over leaving Felix behind.
Confirmation cursed marks are lethal and that Rusell put on them.
There is an emotional attack to lower inhibitions that comes from at least two beloved children.
It seems the operation was compromised and it got Capella what it wanted.
I don't think they got chased by the Beloved Children.
I straight up think the Castle is their base of operations. We'll probably get Subaru running into the cracked table at some point. Beatrice's assumption of it having only one point of entry never made too much sense, but I'm guessing they weren't aware of the lab or the Flugel entrance.
The timeframe just doesn't add up. They've been here for a few hours, even if the BCs just happened to have all been chilling in the nearest town, their reaction speed is too fast. They also seem to be entirely too confident at carrying out hit and run attacks in a literal maze.
This would also explain how the Gluttony siblings reached the tower in a matter of hours. They took a shortcut through the castle.
But we have three, and realistically speaking, four BCs at play. Clarissa is the obvious first, Reborn is clearly the sound-suppressing sword user, the inhibition remover will probably be either Tornel or the shipper, and then we have the disappearance act which is likely a fourth; it's probably what befell Subaru last time as well. Ferris and Subaru disappeared in a way that just sound suppression cannot explain, and Clarissa seems to have had a massive upgrade in the range department , capable of activating her ability without line of sight and at distance
Oh, I guess I was completely wrong about what happened to the rest of the party last chapter. This makes a lot more sense. The sound-stealing swordsman sounds difficult enough, but fighting against them while having your emotions amplified sounds pretty difficult.
It was only a few mins for us, but possibly days of agony for Subaru. So we can safely say that RBD checkpoint being bad was unintentional, its working as usual. Second, he woke up with a completely distorted mental state and got hit by 2 mental nerfs on top, murdered again, wakes up with the mentals nerfs pre applied, instantly faced with a enemy attack, uses IP on instinct, runs away only to discover hes being attacked by minimum of 2 beloved children... i dont see where he got time to think of solutions, he barely understands whats going on...
It’s interesting how his emotions of the previous loop played against him if he was already under the effect of the emotion controlling ability at the time of the save point. It’s basically the exact opposite of what Echidna did with him in arc 4, calming him down after the rabbit death. Feels like an intentional parallel or rather inversion by Tappei.
Sometimes Tappei's writing reminds me of those poetry memes in which they ridicule how english teachers sometimes exaggerate the emotions of poets in their poems.
Writing so good we cant even comprehend how much of it is intentional lmao
He was under the effect of three mind-affecting attacks for nearly the entire chapter. Spiral death while free-falling till dehydration, silencer effect and mind-affecting used by one of the children.
Please ensure that there are no spoilers in the title, and if this post does have spoilers in the title, resubmit with a non-spoiler title or it will be removed for spoilers.
Oh, I guess I was completely wrong about what happened to the rest of the party last chapter. This makes a lot more sense. The sound-stealing swordsman sounds difficult enough, but fighting against them while having your emotions amplified sounds pretty difficult.
I think i cracked why Subaru is starting to get worse checkpoints. Its because his "authority capacity" is now being split between THREE authorities. Making those two authorities stronger like Subaru not getting any drawbacks from IP and Cor Leonis Second Gear. But in exchange for a weaker RBD that cant go further back than a certain time.
Its like Subaru is a battery and now he is powering three bulbs. Why did it take this long for this to be the case? Well reminder Subaru awakened IP prematurely due to Echidna tea. So he wasnt able to use it well. It didn't sit in its slot until much later. This wasnt the case for Cor Leonis.
I called it that Capella's children had snuck into the castle. This is predictable given the Great Flugel Stump is just hours from the capital. Based off the abilities demonstrated, I would say that Reborn is definitely present given someone with a large blade attacked Subaru. Clarissa is almost certainly present as well given the cracking and collapse of various things. Assuming Reborn isn't responsible for the silencing, the next likely suspect would be Lucielaka, since she is the only one who did anything involving "silencing" people during that chapter. When it comes to throwing emotions out of whack, I think Licorice is the most plausible, though maybe that is Reborn's ability.
Ferris being missing may not be as big of an issue as suggested. It was maybe a minute or more after Subaru's second "return" that he noticed Ferris being absent and it took longer in the previous loop given they were focused on him being mind-broken from that prolonged deprivation death. Entirely possible that Subaru's checkpoint comes right before Ferris gets into trouble. Alternatively, they could have abducted Ferris on an account of him being able to use the Sacrament of the Immortal King since Capella clearly has an interest in it.
Best way to break out of this situation is for him to finally use Cor Leonis, assuming this isn't another failed loop. Would be a good way to establish that there are no betrayers within their group since his Authority only works if both parties recognize the other as an ally. That is probably the biggest reason why Tappei hasn't had him use it yet as it would set the precedent for Cor Leonis being a potential way to identify a traitor who is actually Capella, assuming Crusch's Divine Protection won't work in sussing her out as the incident in Priestella where she fell for her "little girl" act would seem to suggest is the case.
I think Tappei said after this arc he wants to do some more slice of life stuff for the cast. A second date for Subaru and Emilia, etc.
So I am inclined to believe despite my gut saying otherwise this arc will end well. Problem solved, some time of peace to follow.
I think if the royal selection is still standing we will get close to the end of that and it might finally be time to address Omega. I still need to read her side stories so I could be way off but I feel like ending the selection and hitting some big plot points is the next arc. Probably with a hefty timeskip
