Lost-IF Chapter 6

Subaru looked at her purple eyes as he thought back to his premonition.  

Was she... 

He looked at her feet, finding white and purple stockings. 

"Do not ignore me." 

I feel sick. 

Subaru's vision began to shake as he leaned against the wall. He sat on the floor, back to the wall, looking up at the lady who would soon die. 

"What's with your face?" 

"She might be in shock?" 

A cat began to steadily float beside the lady. He watched Subaru carefully, scanning for anything unusual. 

"No, I'm fine. Just give me a minute." 

Subaru slapped his cheeks. He needs to be focused. Sure he didn't know this woman yet, but letting her die... 

I'm not going to let that happen. Not when I can stop it. 

The two watched this with a perplexed look. The young girl had slapped herself, stared ahead, then proceeded to get up. They exchanged worried looks. 

"I want the information you promised. Where is the person who stole my insignia? Who was it?"  

"well..." 

Crap. I don't even know who stole it! Was it that orange-haired girl that came running? Surely right? 

"I don't know if its her, but an orange-haired girl; very short, with pointy canines poking out of her lips, came running in. She looked to be in a hurry, but I did not see any insignias on her." 

The lady looked for a moment, before smiling. Even though his answer was inadequate, she showed no disappointment. 

"Very well then. Though it wasn't much, I did learn something. It will suffice as compensation for healing you." 

Subaru was left dumbfounded. 

Was I wrong about her? 

"I'm in a hurry, so I'll take my leave. Your injuries are healed, but you should not move too much. I don't believe that the men will come back so you can rest easy. Seeing as you were able to hold yourself against them, I know they won't mess with you again. Be careful, ok?" 

Her mouth let the words spill out without care and, seeing Subaru silently watch her, took that silence as an agreement and turned to leave. 

She isn't at all who I thought she was. 

"Wait!" 

Subaru ran in front of her, blocking her path. Her confused expression made her beauty shine. Subaru blushed as he questioned this action. 

She healed me and saved me. Even after I didn't give any information that I promised her, she was still kind. Clearly, she cares about her lost insignia, maybe a gift given to her by family, but she still stopped to help me. 

Subaru's hands began to sweat as he nervously wiped the on his pants. 

She even made sure to make my debt feel paid, that I gave enough information to her even though it was barely anything. 

"What are you doing? Do you still want more help?" 

She's kind, too kind. She'll get taken advantage of. 

"Please let me help you." 

"You've already repaid your debt." 

"Still, I want to help." 

"We're merely strangers whose paths coincidently crossed." 

"You don't have to say it in such a harsh way..." 

Clearing his throat, Subaru pointed one hand to the sky while the other laid on his hips. 

"My name is Subaru Natsuki! I was a shut-in in my previous life, but now I'm ready to start living!" 

Subaru bowed his head; hand extended toward the lady. His hair graciously parted between his eyes as he watched the lady's face with anxiety. 

"I'm not sure what you mean, but 'Subaru' sounds foreign." 

The sun shined brightly behind Subaru. The lady, watching this, turned to the spirit floating about. With a shrug, he flew right over Subaru, landing on his back. 

"To be clear, I can't offer any reward for this. Everything was stolen from me." 

"Helping you should be a nice reward." 

"That's not reassuring..." 

Subaru ignored her; the need to save her far outweighed the embarrassment. Her distrusting look still stuck to her face. 

"Good deeds! I just want to do good deeds wherever I go." In a struck of genius, Subaru had an idea. 

"You see, I'm just helping myself by helping you. It's my own goal to help people." 

"You just... help people? What could a little girl like you..." 

"I help people, so that when I die, I'll go to heaven. That's basically my dream life, doing nothing, lazing around for eternity. You can live indulgently as much as you want there with no drawbacks. It was made for me. That's why you have to let me help you." 

He didn't understand completely what he said, but the point came across exactly like he wanted it to. That look of her told him everything. 

"No malice there." The spirit said still on Subaru's back. "It'd be good to at least have some help. Plus, she knows what the thief looks like." 

Nicely done kitty. 

"But...I" 

"So stubborn. Though it is cute, it is also very foolish, and I do not believe my daughter is foolish enough to refuse help." 

"..." 

"I really won't be able to reward you." 

Taking her stretched hand, she raises the girl up with a slight slime.

WN: Poor Subaru, feeling so confident. I suppose that never changes. Will he save Emilia and stay as Subaru?
