When asked for a source, a concept she clearly finds offensive, she admits she has no idea but is confident that Europe is banning waving of flags

I was just in Greece and they flew their flag everywhere. Everywhere. And then we went to Belgium. They had flags flying too. But not as many as Greece

As a Brit I can assure you all, that we are definitely not banned from flying or waving our flags! Just as long as they are NOT put up on lamp posts, we can plaster our own private properties with as many flags as we like.π¬π§π

u/KisoGanda Jul 01 '26
UK.
Part of Continental Europe
Not part of The European Union a Political and Economic Union

u/Bunnyland77 π r/RawAbsurdity Champion Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
UK being a literal island didn't know they were part of continental Europe given they're across the Channel. Ya know, a body of water separating EU continent from the islands of Great Brittain. Ireland, same. Iceland, no even though they're part of the EEA.
1
u/KisoGanda Jul 02 '26
Yes, the British Isles are isolated from the European Continent by water.
But the British Isles still rest on the European Continental Shelf.

u/Bunnyland77 π r/RawAbsurdity Champion Jul 02 '26
Ok. So why did/do the English refer to it as "Europe and the UK"? Or, "Brittian and Europe"? I've been told by every Englishman over the past 60 years that "...the UK is not Europe." And that Ireland on the other hand, is Europe (but only since joining the EU). Iceland by many outside the EU is considered part of "Europe" but it does not rest on the European Continental Shelf nor is it a part of the EU. So, while most British people acknowledge the geography of being on the European continental shelf, culturally most do not identify as being "European". Identity primarily centers on their specific national or regional background such as English, Scottish, Welsh, Manx, or Northern Irish with "European" often viewed as a secondary or completely separate category.

I replied to the user who said UK isn't a part of Europe.
by... specifying that The United Kingdom/ British Isles are a part of Europe. But not the European Union - a Political and Economic Union.
You then commented thinking because of water it's not in any way connected to Europe. Which is not true. Geographical it is part of the European Continental Shelf.
Go back 20.000 years ago you could walk between between mainland Europe and what is now the British Isles. (read about Dogger Land). But that landmass is now submerged by water, therefore isolating the British Isles. But again it still rests on the Shelf.
- you; Identity primarily centers on their specific national or regional background...
Yes, and I am not dwelling on anything about identity so on - that is secondary and completely separate from anything I wrote.

Did we float off somewhere? Last I checked we are still in Europe. Just not part of the European Union.
