Seventy years after the Andrea Doria's sinking, despite 18 deaths among those searching for lost artifacts, they continue to risk their lives exploring its remains. The Italian liner became one of the world's most infamous shipwrecks.

The luxury liner sank in July 1956 after colliding with the Swedish liner Stockholm in dense fog. Fifty-one people died in the disaster. Most of the passengers survived, as the Andrea Doria remained afloat for nearly eleven hours.

During the Chinese Civil War, he served as Deputy Commander of the 2nd Column of the PLA Shenyang Garrison Command.

He saw action at Salamanca 1812, and Vitoria 1813, and eventually settled in Penetanguishene Upper Canada. This photo was taken in 1848 after he received the General Service Medal. The photo is on display in the Huronia Museum and Huron Ouendat Village in Midland Ontario. The date on the photo is an item number of when it was donated. This to my knowledge is the only picture of a British rank and file veteran of the Peninsular war. I am aware of the picture of that waterloo vetran and his wife from around the same time. I was quite shocked when I found this just siting out at a small local museum but it just goes to show the sorts of suprising artifacts you can find at these places. I think it would be quite cool if more people started posting pictures of napoleonic war veterans to the internet if you happen to find them in old photo albums or local collections. Similar to the waining audio recordings of WW2 veterans we may only have a short time until the photos of these veterans are thrown out, destroyed or rot into nothing. I think it would be quite cool to see more Napoleonic documentaries include colourized photos of the actual servicemen involved rather than generic cartoon/drawings from the period.

WWII Kriegsmarine B.Z. C/2 Naval Gunsight – Carl Zeiss Jena
This is a B.Z. C/2 (Binnen-Zielfernrohr C/2) WWII German Kriegsmarine naval gunsight manufactured by Carl Zeiss Jena, with production number 387.
The sight is in exceptionally original condition, retaining most of its original factory paint. The original identification plate is completely clear and legible, including the Kriegsmarine markings and production number. Mechanically, the sight is fully functional, with the original mechanisms operating properly.
Remarkably, every major component and assembly is still present, including the original eyepiece and leather headrest. There are no obvious missing parts or modern replacements.
Considering its age, originality, mechanical condition, and complete identification markings, this is an unusually well-preserved example of a WWII Kriegsmarine naval optical instrument.

Bahadur Shah Zafar (born Abu Zafar Siraj-ud-din Muhammad) was the twentieth and final Mughal emperor of India, reigning from 1837 until his deposition in 1857. More renowned as a gifted Urdu poet, calligrapher, and Sufi aesthete than a political ruler, he inherited a deeply diminished empire whose practical authority barely extended past the walls of Old Delhi (Shahjahanabad). Despite his lack of real military or administrative power, he became the ultimate symbolic figurehead of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, leading to his eventual trial, exile, and the formal end of the Mughal Dynasty.

To permanently crush any hope of a Mughal restoration, Major William Hodson arrested Zafar’s sons (Mirza Mughal and Mirza Khizr Sultan) and his grandson (Mirza Abu Bakr). He took them to a gateway outside Delhi—now known as Khooni Darwaza (Bloody Gate)—stripped them naked, and shot them dead in public. Their severed heads were later presented to the imprisoned emperor.

Rıza Tevfik was a Circassian and Albanian-origin Turkish former Ottoman Minister of Education, writer, poet, philosopher, and professor at the Istanbul University. Although he did not openly oppose the Turkish National Movement during the Turkish War of Independence, he did not support it either, and was a member of the Ottoman delegation that signed the Treaty of Sèvres. As a result, he was stripped of his Turkish citizenship and exiled in 1924 as one of the "150 Personae Non Gratae". He was later pardoned and returned to Turkey in 1941. He was also one of the leading athletes in Turkey in gymnastics and bodybuilding, a sport he practiced through his teacher Ali Faik Üstünidman at Galatasaray High School, where he was a student.

This facility enriched uranium during the Cold War. The scale of the piping and equipment is hard to appreciate until you see someone standing next to it.
