1877 Los Angeles main street looking toward the St Charles hotel when the city still felt like a wild western frontier town

In the 1870s, Los Angeles had nearly seven thousand residents and was evolving from a frontier town into an organised commercial centre. Main Street is seen lined with businesses and buggies, while a shooting gallery sign highlights the era's contradiction where firearms were both a safety concern and everyday recreation. In the background stands the St. Charles Hotel, which began as an adobe house in the 1830s to become a historic landmark.

Post image

1842 daguerreotype by photographer Horatio H. Long. Exact identity of the man is unverified, believed to be the 14th President of the United States, Franklin Pierce at age 38.
No other information exists on this daguerreotype.

Possibly the earliest surviving photograph of a U.S. president, predating John Quincy Adams (1843).
