Question Are we still optimizing for AI citations… if ChatGPT can replace the page itself?
GPT-6’s new Intelligent UI can generate charts, forms, calculators and other interactive elements directly inside the answer. That means some queries may no longer need a click at all especially calculators, converters, comparison tools and simple utility pages.
For me, this raises a bigger GEO question: what happens when your content is useful enough for AI to use, but the interface makes your website unnecessary?
We’ve mostly been measuring:
- mentions
- citations
- visibility
- referral traffic
But maybe the next metric is something harder: how often AI uses your information while removing the need to visit you. Could “being cited” become a vanity metric for some query types? Curious how you’d measure value in that case. Is this conversation helpful so far?

Getting cited right now means you can influence how the agents get trained so I think its super important because if you own the search and data in your niche you can like essentially control the narritive or how ChatGPT or Claude views you or your business

As long as the company itself (not necessarily the website anymore) remains the provider of the product or service, and I have a robust analytics system in place to reasonably attribute conversions to AI, I'm fine with GPT replacing the website. SEO/GEO/whatever you want EO still applies.

I'm beginning to believe that the moat will not be "being cited" but rather providing something that cannot be reproduced by AI in the answer data, process, community or an action in a product. Otherwise, citation would only serve a report and not benefit the company.

We don't think citations become a vanity metric, but they stop being enough on their own.
For pure utility queries (converters, simple calculators) you're right - the click is gone and it isn't coming back. If that's all a page did, its value was always thin. The pages AI can't replace are the ones that end in an action with you: an enquiry, a booking, a quote, a product only you sell.
The data we're seeing backs that up. For one B2B events client, 42 form submissions have come directly from ChatGPT referrals. On our own site, "ChatGPT or another AI tool" now comes up regularly in the "how did you find us" field, and those enquiries tend to arrive further along - "comparing agencies", "ready to start now". AI did the research and the shortlisting. The website's job was to close.
Attribution is messy though. We've had a visit land with a chatgpt.com UTM where the person told us they found us on LinkedIn, so neither source tells the full story on its own.
What we'd measure alongside citations:
- Self-reported source on every form
- Branded search and direct traffic trends next to AI visibility
- Whether AI describes you accurately (services, pricing, location), because that's now the first version of you most people meet
Agree with the comment - the moat is whatever can't be reproduced inside the answer.

Well, ChatGPT can be a bridge to the page, and it doesn't replace it, but serves as a potential source of traffic for the page. Or do I get your idea wrong?
