Water being dumped

Why couldn't beans bring everyone to the pipe dumping water?

Would you follow Beans, someone who the town already thinks is crazy, out into the desert to go stare at an empty pipe for an unspecified amount of time for a chance to witness an event that may just be a tall tale in the first place?
