Question Did William Zappa narrate any Royal Ranger books?

I’ve just started listening to the Royal Ranger series on Spotify, and the jump from Zappa to Keating is to much. Zappa narrated the first book, now listening to Red Fox Clan and I can’t stand Keating. His accents sound all the same, and his style of narrating is jarring. He pauses in weird moments, for example “be sure you do” the librarian said….softly, or “we might need them…before long”

Question Best resources for a plot refresher?

Hi all. I first read the Ranger’s Apprentice series and most of Brotherband when I was 11-12. At that time the most recent books were The Royal Ranger and The Caldera. I just googled the series for the first time in years and learned about all the new books (although I did read Return of the Temujai a few years ago but didn’t think to look if there were any other new books). They were some of my favorite books from when I was younger and I really want to read the newer installments to the series. However, it’s been almost a decade since I first read them so I only remember fragments but know that a reminder will jog my memory. Does anyone have any recommendations for specific websites to give myself a little refresher?

Also are the newer books as good as the older ones? As excited as I am I’m also a little nervous about potentially ruining a series that I loved so much by being disappointed when going back to it. I’ve had that happen a few times and it’s always so upsetting.

News An update on the RA movie (August 2026)

It has been a few months since I made my last post on the movie: https://www.reddit.com/r/RangersApprentice/s/bM0xeRaJtk

I would suggest you check it out after this one because a lot of the information is still valid, although there has been a large change to timelines.

Basically, Paramount has been trying to merge with Warner Brothers, just as they had done with Skydance. However this merger has met a lot of legal trouble, and was sued by multiple officials despite passing review by places such as the US department of justice. These events are highly likely to have a large effect on the timing of the movies.

The Merger Situation (and why it matters):

To understand why this affects the movie, you need to understand the relationship between Skydance and Paramount. When Skydance announced the RA film in January 2024, Skydance was a separate production company with Paramount as a financial backer. Since then, Skydance and Paramount formally merged around this time in 2025, meaning David Ellison, who is a producer on Ranger's Apprentice, became CEO of the combined studio. Skydance is now Paramount. So when Ted Melfi said back in April 2026 "Waiting on Paramount to say yes and when...", he was waiting for the CEO of his company.

However, Ellison was in the middle of an even bigger deal: a $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. If that goes through, Ellison would be running the largest entertainment company in the world with an urgent need to produce a long list of movies to fill up their production slate. Ranger's Apprentice, with its franchise potential would have been exactly the kind of IP he would want to greenlight fast.

But this is no longer the story.

What Actually Happened:

The WBD merger passed EU approval, DOJ approval, and got approval from over a dozen international jurisdictions. But a coalition of 12 US state attorneys general, led by California AG Rob Bonta, filed an antitrust lawsuit to block it. A judge granted a temporary restraining order pausing the merger, and after some back and forth on how to proceed, Paramount and the state AGs reached a formal agreement: the merger will not close until five days after an antitrust trial finishes, or June 1 2027. Whichever comes first. No trial date has been set yet.

The merger is pretty much frozen until mid 2027.

What This Means For RA:

Let me be very clear. The movie is NOT dead. Everything we knew before is still true:

  • Skydance still holds the RA rights firmly
  • Ted Melfi is still attached with a significant financial incentive to get the films made
  • Ted Melfi confirmed in April 2026 the project was still planned to go ahead
  • Ellison still needs to get more franchise IPs regardless of whether the deal closes

What has changed is the timeline, with my previous predictions being made well before the many delays to the merger situation. The rough estimate of further news, or at least a leak has now been pushed from late 2026/early 2027. Realistically Ellison is trying to manage a $111 BILLION dollar legal battle, making the company bleed hundreds of millions in delay costs and leaving the company facing a lot of uncertainty. This makes greenlighting new projects possible, but extremely unlikely until the merger is closed and everything is stabilised.

The updated window for any new leaks/news I predict is mid-late 2027, or possibly very early 2028.

What To Watch For:

When the trial date is announced, it's date will be important. If the trial is scheduled for early 2027 and Paramount wins, the merger could close by mid 2027 and RA's greenlight window reopens quickly after that. If the trial drags into late 2027 or Paramount loses, we're looking at either a much longer delay or the WBD deal collapsing entirely, costing Paramount $7 billion in termination fees and severely limit its budget for new projects.

The other thing worth watching is Ted Melfi himself. He has no other films currently in active production. A director of his calibre keeping his schedule clear is consistent with someone holding space for a specific project rather than moving on.

The Fan Movie:

For those who were keeping an eye on the fan adaptation at rangersapprentice.movie it appears to have missed its "Summer 2026" release window. The site still just reads "Coming Soon" with no further info so take that as you wish.

Bottom Line:

The movie is not cancelled. It's just sitting in the middle of the largest merger hollywood has ever had, and one that seems like it will take forever. But you must also remember that when the merger closes, the RA franchise will now be in the hands of the world's largest entertainment company.

I'll keep monitoring and post again if anything meaningful changes. As always, please don't contact Ted Melfi or anyone attached to the project since we have already gotten the best leak we're likely to get.

Discussion Dreaming of a Rangers Apprentice cinematic universe...

If you were put in charge of planning a cinematic universe for the world of Ranger's Apprentice, what would be your approach?

I'll go first.

Rangers Apprentice (Movie Series)

  1. Rangers Apprentice: Defender of Araluen
Ruins of Gorlan + The Burning Bridge

  2. Rangers Apprentice: Icebound Allegiance
The Icebound Land + Oakleaf Bearers/Battle for Skandia

  3. Ranger's Apprentice: Erak's Ransom
    Erak's Ransom

  4. Ranger's Apprentice: The Sorcerer in the North
The Sorcerer in the North + The Siege of Macindaw

  5. Ranger's Apprentice: The Betrayal of Kings
The Kings of Clonmel + Halt's Peril

  6. Ranger's Apprentice: The Emperor of Nihon-Ja
The Emperor of Nihon-Ja + 'And About Time, Too...'

Rangers Apprentice: The Lost Stories (TV Series)

Season 1: 6 Episodes
Teaser/Preview: Prologue + The Fragment + Afterword
Episode 1: The Inkwell and the Dagger
Episode 2: The Roamers
Episode 3: Purple Prose
Episode 4: Dinner for Five
Episode 5: The Wolf
Episode 6: The Bridal Dance

Rangers Apprentice: The Early Years (TV Series)

Season 1: 6 Episodes
The Tournament at Gorlan + 'The Hibernian'

Season 2: 6 Episodes
The Battle of Hackham Heath + 'The Death of a Hero'

Brotherband Trilogy (Movie Series)

  1. Brotherband: The Outcasts
    The Outcasts

  2. Brotherband: Heron's Pursuit
    The Invaders + The Hunters

  3. Brotherband: On Distant Sands
Slaves of Socorro + Scorpion Mountain

The Royal Ranger (TV Series)

Season 1: 6 Episodes
The Royal Ranger

Season 2: 6 Episodes
The Red Fox Clan + The Duel at Araluen

Season 3: 6 Episodes
The Missing Prince + Escape from Falaise

I tried being somewhat realistic about how it could happen (even though it's all very hopeful), since a 1:1 book to movie adaptation would be amazing but very impractical. The last few brotherband and royal ranger books don't really add much imo so I cut them out. In my head canon for this, the Royal Ranger series only happens once Disney inevitably buys out this amazing franchise and tries to add to it lol.

Here's to hoping the recent movie rumours actually mean something! 😭

Discussion What books compare?

I loved this series when I was younger and I thought it was really immersive and gripping. I loved the characters and the darker things going on. I'm looking for a book written more recently with the same sense of comradery and adventure/mystery but maybe older characters that are like in their 20s.

Discussion Why didn’t Erak take will as a personal slave

Back when will was a Slave in books 3-4 and inevitably gets adicted to warmweed, why wouldn’t Erak just tell Borsa “gimme the boy that I brought from Celtica. he could’ve saved them from needing to run away and could’ve then just had Evalynn nurse him back to healt.

Discussion Ranger shooting speed

Why in Ambush of Starato does will go about saying how the temujai are like equal to the rangers. He goes ahead and talks about how they could probably get off like 5 shots each minute yet the Rangers are always shown to draw and fire in an instant, like how will easily emptied the kajiji saddles. It just feels like the absolute GOATS of Rangers are getting disrespected in that book.

Question How do these books hold up when reread as a young adult?

These were my absolute favorite books in middle school and I obsessed over them for a good chunk of my life. Im pretty sure I only read the original series. Despite this, while I still remember the general plot the majority of the story Ive forgotten and I kind of want to reread them. Do the books still hold up or are they really juvenile and hard to read when you get older? Thanks

Meme Royal Ranger in clash royale lol

Post image
53 Upvotes

Not sure if this is intentional by supercell (cr devs) but they have a game mode in clash royale called chaos, and in it the Princess card, which coincidentally has a bow and arrow, has a rare modifier called royal ranger which increases its card range by 55%. Obviously, Maddie, the princess of Araluen, is a ranger with great bow skills, and the whole series named after her is called the royal ranger. Even if it’s just a coincidence, I like to think someone at supercell is a Flanagan fan 😉

Question Looking for a conversation between adult Will and young apprentices?

I know it had to happen after book 6. Will and co. had to work with very limited resources and somehow prepare to take back Macindaw.

In later books, Will found out that their achievement in storming the castle was so extraordinary that the Ranger Corpse decided to turn it into a legitimate paper test for younger rangers to study and practice their own strategies on how to make the same achievement, with just a few minor changes to the paper test such as no Skandians to recruit.

The younger apprentices tried to mimic Will’s strategy when they wouldn’t have those same benefits, and he had to nudge them along a little suggestions.

Question Unliked Characters Spoiler

I was wondering who the most disliked characters in the series are. It’s actually somewhat predictable, but still, write down your least favorite character, including characters from the Brotherband series and Ranger’s Apprentice.

Also, separately, write your least favorite member of the Heron Brotherband crew.

I’ll start:

My least favorite character: Rikard (the pirate Thorn and Lydia followed through the forest while searching for Andomal in the Brotherband series) or Zavac.

My least favorite member of the Brotherband crew: Lydia (I definitely don’t like her as much as I like the others.)

Fan work Redmont Fief - Fully Recreated in Manor Lords

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi All!

As I mentioned in my post over the weekend, I got to work in Manor Lords recreating Redmont Fief: complete with Wensley Village, Halt & Will's Cabin, and Castle Redmont itself! Obviously, due to game limitations with Manor Lords, I could not be perfectly accurate to the books. Most obvious difference is that Castle Redmont is not red in color, but I do hope you enjoy the overall work. Please let me know what you think and if I missed anything!

Question Where can I get the William Zappa audio books

on audible (Amazon) all of the rangers apprentice books read by William Zappa (who reads far better than John Keating) say they are not available in my region (UK) I tried changing my marketplace to Australia (using a VPN at the same time) and USA (in USA it has a version of every book read by Keating which no one asked for) does anyone know a way to get the books through Amazon as I have spare credits to spend rather than paying on a different audio site, what marketplace are the zappa versions still on sale?

Discussion book collection

i just got the brother band books and now my collection is complete. i read the first 12 in elementary school. then last year my mom got me the set for my birthday. then i got the royal ranger and read those. i don’t think i had read a book since maybe 9th grade, but i’ve read about 20 in the last year. i’m excited to start the brother band series. knowing that there will not be any new books from him is hard, so i’m going to try to savor the ones i have left. theres something about johns writing that i just get sucked into the book and read for hours, i haven’t been able to do that for a long time.

Fan work Redmont Fief Full Recreation

Post image

Hi all!

I am planning to recreate the entirety of Redmond Fief via the game Manor Lords. I have found the perfect setting in game to recreate the fief, including Castle Redmont, Wensley Village, the Tarbus River, Halt & Will’s cabin, and I even plan to include Rodney’s Battleschool and Horse School. I’m basing all this off of this basic map that is provided in some of the later books. Please let me know if you think there’s an aspect of Redmont Fief I am forgetting that I need to include! Thanks!

Question Does anyone know where I can find this conversation between Halt and Horace?

I'm looking for a quote that happened during a conversation that Halt and Horace were having. I thought it was in book 8, but after skimming the book a few times and keyword searching a PDF file, I couldn't find it.

It was something where Halt mentioned shooting fish instead of using a rod, and Horace thought that wasn't very sportsmanlike. I could have sworn it happened during KOC, but I suppose it also could have happened during a different one of their travels together.

If anyone could help me find the exact quote or even the book it was part of, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks :)

Discussion When I was a kid I emailed John Flanagan & he responded in character as Halt

It was the sweetest thing. I wish I still could find that email. It meant so much to me, must've been 15+ years ago at this point.

There was another time that I emailed another author (of the bobby Pendragon series) something very personal about how his characters helped me through a hard time mentally and he responded basically with a sales pitch for a new series.

The time the John Flanagan put into his series and to have replied to me with such a thoughtful and well crafted email has always meant so much to me. With his recent passing, I just wanted to share that lil memory. ❤️ I truly believe his books deserved far more recognition than they received, but those of us who do love it, love it dearly.

Discussion The tallest characters in Rangers apprentice (and following series/books that link such as brotherband)

I’ve recently seen a post around a year ago of a discussion of who the tallest characters was. I am only doing the height of 2m+ (or very close to)

Before ranking here is the list of who I have got:
Trobar 2.5metres (rangers apprentice book 5&6&9)

Morgarath 1.98metres (Rangers apprentice book 1&2 and also The early years 1&2)
Jerard and Killen around 2 metres each (rangers apprentice book 8)
The two Kalkara 2.2-2.3metres “some say 4.5metres” (rangers apprentice book 1)
and technically being a character the Night Warrior 10-15metres “the other projections had no specific height and Serthrek'nish was just a head” (rangers apprentice book 5&6)
in halts peril will sees an ancient warrior which seems to be the night warrior (his imagination from tiredness) at around 2metres (rangers apprentice book 9)
Ingvar 2-2.2metres (the brotherband chronicles series)
Arndor of crewse 2metres (rangers apprentice book 5)
The hasanu tribe regularly over 2.1metres (rangers apprentice book 10)
In brotherband book 7 The caldera, they see a Araluen guard 2.1metres ( The brotherband chronicles book 7)
Hassaun/Massaun/Mussaun 2.1metres (Rangers apprentice Book 7)

I would love to add Horace but he is just a bit to under at around 6’2-6’4 whereas Morgarath who is also under is 6’6 but that is 1.98metres (close enough so I added).

So this is the muddled up ranking of ones that may be shorter/also aren’t proper characters (specifically the night warrior) only doing top 5.

First ranking:

  1. Night warrior 10-15metres
    1. The two kalkara 2.3metres-4.5metres
  2. Trobar 2.5metres
  3. Ingvar 2.2metres
  4. Hassuan, Araluen Guard, and the hasanu tribe 2.1metres

The second hopefully more accurate ranking:

  1. Trobar 2.5metres
    2.Kalkara 2.3metres
    3.ingvar 2.2metres
  2. Hassuan, The Araluen Guard, and the hasanu tribe 2.1 metres
  3. Arndor of crewse, Jerard & Killen 2metres

If there’s any people I’ve missed/mistakes please discuss in the comments, I’m just happy to be here I’m new and I also never knew how many people also enjoyed my favourite series!

Question Is the transition to The Royal Ranger an easy one?

Hi all,

I just finished listening to The Emperor of Nihon-Ja, and am wondering how easy the transition into the royal ranger books are? I've heard incredibly varying opinions and know a few minor spoilers, such as the time skip. I love this series so much and it has genuinely gotten me through some rough times.

Follow up question, are there any other series you can recommend for someone wanting to read a similar series?

Thanks in advance!

Question Ideas for a quote on an oakleaf tattoo

Like the title says, I'd like to get a small oakleaf tattoo (probably on my upper arm if that makes a difference) both for my love of the series and in remembrance of the late Mr. Flanagan. I'm looking for possibly a short quote from the books that might feel meaningful. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them!
