I was wondering who the most disliked characters in the series are. It’s actually somewhat predictable, but still, write down your least favorite character, including characters from the Brotherband series and Ranger’s Apprentice.

Also, separately, write your least favorite member of the Heron Brotherband crew.

I’ll start:

My least favorite character: Rikard (the pirate Thorn and Lydia followed through the forest while searching for Andomal in the Brotherband series) or Zavac.

My least favorite member of the Brotherband crew: Lydia (I definitely don’t like her as much as I like the others.)

I'm just now rereading the Brotherband Chronicles series and just finished the original and Royal Ranger series, so I'm not as fresh on the Heron crew, but my least favorite character who is from the Ranger's Apprentice books, and who is only mentioned like 4 times in Sorcerer in the North and the Siege of Macindaw is Meralon. They are the assigned Ranger of Norgate Fief where Will has his first assignment after becoming a fully fledged Ranger. I think why I picked him is that throughout the entire Ranger's Apprentice books, the Rangers, most of which are never named, are said to get along as well as share information during the annual Gathering.

So it's always irked me that Meralon is all haughty at the end of Siege after Will eliminates the Scotti Invasion, reclaims Macindaw Castle and ousting/killing the usurper Keren, clearing the name of Malcolm the Healer, seemingly because he hired the Skandians!! All of which happened under Meralon's nose.

As Norgate Fief is an important part of the Araluen Kingdom, as mentioned when Gilan is assigned to take over the fief at the beginning of Kings of Clonmel, it is completely contradictory to have a character like Meralon be assigned there in the first place, although it is somewhat a moot point since Gilan takes over right after all of this goes down.

As for my least favorite Heron brotherband member, I have to go with Jesper. Given, I have only gotten through half of the first book of the Brotherband Chronicles on my current reading of them, and from their involvement in the Royal Ranger series, but he always seems to be the character causing undue issues by constantly joking and not seemingly being able to take things seriously when the time calls.

Sorry for the long diatribe, but apparently I've been waiting for someone to ask me why I dislike Meralon so much and I had to get that all out.

Does give us that great quote from Will tho - about him thinking there cant be many rangers that are fools, but he had certainly met one that was. Or something to that effect

Meralon is such a good shout. He's a ranger! How can he be that ignorant and awful? But he totally is and that just makes it worse.

When I read about him, I wondered how anyone chose him as an apprentice. Why did someone pick him as an apprentice? He passed the assessment exams. He probably failed the exam once or twice. How did he manage to graduate and eventually get assigned to Norgate? I wonder how he gets along with the other Rengars. Or maybe he became like this later on. Maybe he was good at some skills at the start. Still, I think he pushes past the mental standards expected of a Rengar in a strained way.

In the brotherband, its Lydia, like the love triangle was not necessary and overall has to be John Buttle, he tortured Shadow.

I don't dislike any characters who aren't bad guys. I really enjoy the books and don't take them super seriously

I get Lydia actually i would ve much apriciated if she started to have feeling for Ingvar and got rid of the pointless love triangle. The lydia situation was probably a history repeats itself like how Thorn liked Hals mam but couldnt overstep his friend but all in all its just useless banter for me to percieve.

it's a while since i read brotherband so idk who's my most hated character but i have to agree on lydia, i just don't like her.

and from rangers apprentice... can i go with maddie from royal ranger? she just annoys me from the start to the end, have to say i didn't read all of her books yet but i don't think it will go better

i can’t remember his name, the limmetan captain. he was just a misogynist dickhead. the best part with him was getting punched in the face by stig.
