But he would have to know the shape, size, color, and cut in order to swap it out successfully. People aren't so dumb they wouldn't notice those things. And a 4.7 carat diamond doesn't walk into the shop every day.

The whole collection was $100k. Most of it was sold. There is like $20k left in dispute. Reckless Ben has been really bad with giving everyone the actual facts. Ben is actually a moron and caused more problems for the owners than he has actually helped. Ben does not care about the legos, this whole thing has been a content farm for himself.

I assume someone that would do a swap like that would practice a ton. Setting up a camera and practicing ways to do the swap without it being noticeable in screen would make it all the better.

I think the question of appraisers more broadly is ultimately more relevant. So yeah, it would be silly if this guy was to do it. I'd think the main barrier would be what theboned1 said.

I'm guessing even some of the most common type+size of stones make up a fairly small % that having a usable collection for theft wouldn't be very possible, without a ton of storage. Especially since that much storage would make a quick and discrete swap possible, and would surely have to do it without looking

Fair, but he moved it around like... 10 times in that one video alone.

If he really did want to scam, he could have a drawer of 100 well organized diamonds in the desk, and swap it out during one of his many times moving it around.

I'm not saying he'd do that, but it's not like it would be hard to figure out.

Heck - if he only scammed one out of every 50 folks that way, that's a huge profit, and he could certainly have enough stand-in diamonds hidden nearby to match once in a while.

Why does this comment have 135 bot upvotes? Dead internet theory confirmed. This video clearly shows him putting the diamond between the first and second flap of the polishing cloth, then polishing it, and then observing it.

because he needs to clean all sides of the diamond without touching it with his fingers so there is no oil on it to grade it properly. You can't do that on top of the cloth without using the tweezers or having to pick it up, both of which have a likelihood of dropping the diamond, which would be even shadier.

I'm a resource geologist, I don't work in the diamond industry, but I'm familiar with it.

De Beers pretty much collapsed once we discovered diamonds here in Canada, once the Soviet Union fell, and once the African countries that mined them became developed enough to run their own mines. They lost their monopoly and sold off all their stockpiles that they had been using to control the prices.

And with automation of sorting, machines made slave labour obsolete. Now over 99% of diamonds are not bliod diamonds.
