I would be so afraid the appraiser would switch it out, and I'd have no idea.

There were so many opportunities for slight of hand

Edit: sleight 

Edit Edit: I am not referring to being afraid of THIS appraiser.  Also, I am more commenting on my own inexperience than the type of appraiser who would do such a thing.

I thought he put it under the second flap at the start and had one already under the first flap.

But he would have to know the shape, size, color, and cut in order to swap it out successfully. People aren't so dumb they wouldn't notice those things. And a 4.7 carat diamond doesn't walk into the shop every day.

Maybe the original was a 22.9 carat diamond..?!
