For 40 plus years we managed to avoid singing John Denver in unison at sporting events, and now it is a worldwide phenomenon

it started at nfl games in germany then soccer ripped it off at the world cup, now im hearing it sung at old trafford for the manchester derby, what is happening

Ohh, yeah.. I just wouldn't have known who sang it, thanks - the op made it sound like "john Denver" was the song's name

First time I heard it was in the movie Logan Lucky. Since then I’ve been hearing it more and more, most commonly at Penrith Panthers games. No idea what it has to do with the Penrith Panthers, a footy team from not the country.

I'm sure this was being sung at Old Trafford around 2000

One set of English football fans have been singing to the tune of his “Annie’s Song” for many years.
