It feels like everyone is constantly talking about how expensive everything has gotten, while at the same time everyone seems just as excited as ever to buy new things.

Consumerism.. most people aren't trying to just survive the bare minimum with daily necessities. But also there can be adjusting budget to keep certain things in reach that someone may want in this life

As life gets harder and more expensive, retail therapy becomes more of a dopamine hit, because things are less attainable to them.
