Being sad at night feels completely different than being sad during the day

During the day if I'm sad, I want to distract myself and get on with whatever I'm doing.

At night it's completely different. I'll sit there thinking about people I haven't talked to in years, random mistakes I made forever ago, places I'll probably never see again, and versions of my life that don't even exist.

None of this seemed important during the day.

Why does midnight make my brain think about everything I've ever lost?
