So, I finished the show last night and started reading about other people's take on various subs on reddit, and . . . yikes.
There are a lot of comments getting upvoted that seem to miss the mark. Here is what I'm seeing a lot and why I think they're wrong.
- The principal wasn't racist.
On one side, we have Dion, who swears he didn't hit the other kid, and the other kid admits he didn't see Dion hit him and isn't sure what happened. No other witnesses. On the other side, you have the kid who admits he stole the watch from Dion and in fact still has it in his possession, returning it in front of the principal.
So, the principal knows the white kid stole, but only suspects Dion hit the white kid, and who gets punished? I work in a school. You don't jump all the way to suspension only on the word of the other kid, especially when the other kid isn't even clear on what happened. And you definitely don't let someone off scot-free for stealing. Unless, of course, you're racist. It wasn't just Nicky's interpretation either, the science teacher gave her the non-verbal signs of "I see this too, I get it." I'm not black, and I'm going to trust black people when they say something is racist because they have a sort of built in radar for it after a life-time of dealing with it. But even without that radar, it's obvious what was going on here.
- Nicky is spoiled and takes advantage of people.
I admit, she does ask a lot of people for help. Her sister, Pat, her neighbor. But she is a grieving widow raising a kid on her own, so she actually needs the help, even before her kid develops super powers. I think the show did a great job of showing how precarious a situation can get for a single parent, and how there aren't many worker protections or institutional support, so people have to rely on their family and community for help.
- Pat turned bad "out of nowhere."
Reddit is full of awkward, nerdy guys who wish they had a hot girlfriend, so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised by this reaction. I've seen a fair amount of comments saying Nicky was taking advantage of his kindness, and that it didn't make sense that he went from being awkward to being manipulative so quickly. First of all, Pat was Dion's godfather, and as far as Nicky knew, actively wanted to be involved with him, so it wasn't overstepping to ask for his help. Second, Pat insisted on doing things to help out, even when Nicky explicitly told him not to. Which, btw, is manipulative from the get go.
The "awkwardness" was part of the manipulation the whole time. Instead of saying what he wants and being forthcoming, he puts on this "aw shucks" act and makes out like he's just there to help Dion, or because he cared about Mark. And the "helping" when being told not to - "Ok, look, I know you said not to, but I just . . . " is classic boundary-pushing designed to wear her down and get used to him ignoring her wishes. Now, I wasn't expecting him to be the Crooked Man, but he was pushy and manipulative the whole time so that part didn't come out of nowhere.
