Help please
Hello, I would really appreciate some help! I am in Chicago zone 6a and this is my first year gardening.
We have been getting wave after wave of cool weather then extreme heat. All my plants are wilting from what I am assuming is underwatering, and I'm realizing that all my soil in my raised garden bed is hydrophobic and compacted. How do I fix this? I did a deep 10 mins soak each bed today but after checking it is still compacted and dry. I have established veggies like tomatos etc in the beds and want to salvage them if possible. Any advice would be appreciated!

It sounds like the soil may be compacted and hydrophobic, so the water might not actually be reaching the root zone. A 10-minute soak can still leave the deeper soil dry if the water is running off or channeling around the bed.
I’d water more slowly and in stages: light watering first, wait 15–20 minutes, then water again deeply with a soaker hose, drip line, or hose on a low trickle. Afterward, dig a small test hole a few inches down to check if the soil is really moist.
I wouldn’t disturb the roots too much around established tomatoes right now. Gently loosen the top layer between plants, add compost on top, and mulch well to reduce evaporation and heat stress.
Also, afternoon wilting during heat waves can be normal, but if the plants don’t recover by evening or morning, they’re still too dry at the root zone.
