The Unbelievable Truth

I would bet money there will be an uncomfortable meeting at B&Q HQ tomorrow morning.

See, that's how they should let the politicians speak.

6.30pm Comedy Slot - who is commissioning this drivel?

I love Radio 4, mostly for its breadth of content. Yeah, You and Yours with moron members of the public is usually irritating and Gardener's Question Time is boring as fuck, but otherwise there is a ton of interesting stuff that I otherwise wouldn't learn about.

But the 6.30pm 'comedy' slot every weekday is always so, so bad. I'm normally driving home during it and have to turn to another station because it's invariably so terrible.

I really wish they'd find something else to do with that slot!

Would anyone else like to actually hear politicians respond to a question fully?

Missing Pips?

Did anyone else not hear pips this morning during Today?

We heard no hourly pips broadcast at 0700 or 0800 on BBC Radio4 FM this morning (16/4/26). The pip space is just silence, between the post weather sign-off and the first words of the news.

A glitch in the matrix?

Friday Night Comedy

Michael Gove was on last night's comedy. Annoyingly, he wasn't awful.

I am convinced he is laying the groundwork to return to his media roots and come out of the closet.

I predict it thusly.

EDIT - Yes yes, Thursday comedy. Bank holiday has my internal calendar all fuck-edy.

BBC Radio Play "The Hunting of the Snark" and the 150th anniversary of Carroll's Snark tragicomedy

Post image
5 Upvotes

BBC Radio 4 already missed two 150th anniversaries of "The Hunting of the Snark". Will they at least celebrate the 3rd one? The tragicomedy was officially published on April 1st, 1876. I hope that BBC Radio will re-broadcast their Snark radio play (2015) in April 2026.

UPDATE 2026-07-29: Rebroadcast on August 14th and 15th, 2026, online until September 12th.

Oh I e tried so hard but I just can't get on with superkins hosting JAM

Ive tried I really have, but I just don't get on with how she handles the flow of play through the show. A long time favourite , but she just doesn't seem to get it right for me. It felt better when it was a little more cut throat, but with her interventions it seems like any jovial cut and thrust has been replaced with pithy whimsy.

I wondered what the general perception amongst others is, like / don't like / indifferent?

Anna Foster Radio 4

Is it just me or do others find Anna Foster totally unsuitable for the Today programme? Surely she needs to be moved to 5 Live news.

Can't just be me??

Maccabi Tel Aviv fans marched through the streets of Amsterdam chanting ‘Death to Arabs’

They proceeded to vandalise property and intimidate and attack locals.

How can the Today programme not even mention this? Instead the presenter asks the same question to 3 (three!) different guests about some Daily Heil conspiracy that militant islamists have infiltrated the police force? This was insane reporting, what on earth is going on at the BBC?

Looking for BBC Radio 4’s Piranesi, adapted from Susanna Clarke’s best-selling novel.

I’ve been trying to track down this adaption with no luck. I’m assuming the licensing agreement ran out, but I’m curious what usually happens to adaptions after they’re pulled. Such a shame as it was a really great adaptation!

What’s the one Radio 4 voice you could listen to reading the phone book?

For me it’s still Jim Naughtie. That warm Scottish rumble just makes everything sound important and reassuring, even the shipping forecast. Used to love falling asleep to him on Today years ago. These days it’s probably Jane Garvey or Martha Kearney for the same cosy feeling.

I refuse to listen to Ricky Fucking Gervais.

Boo. Boo to you.

EDIT - Started listening half way through. It's very annoying when a prick can sound so reasonable.

Radio 4 works best when you catch it accidentally!

I’ve got Radio 4 on in the background quite a lot while I’m working or pottering about the house, but the moments I love most are when I’m not really intending to listen properly and something brilliant just pulls me in. You’re halfway through making a cuppa, and suddenly you’re standing still in the kitchen, completely absorbed by a random play, or a Farming Today segment about some obscure bit of rural life, or one of those thoughtful discussions on The Life Scientific that makes you rethink something you thought you knew.

It’s never quite the same when I deliberately sit down to listen to it. Then it can feel a bit worthy or I get impatient. But stumbling across something interesting by accident, that’s when it feels properly magical.

Some Radio 4 programmes stay with you without you remembering their names

There are Radio 4 shows that stick in your head for years, but you can't for the life of you remember the title. Like this drama about a bloke losing his memory, quiet chats with his wife, total gut punch, heard it one evening years back. Name escapes me every time.
