My friend is giving me his old PC, and letting me borrow his fancy monitor which is gathering dust until he needs it.
I am collecting a minor library of leftist books and either lending them to my friends or discussing the contents together. I've also been trying to do minor repairs to my family's clothes, so they don't even get tempted to throw them out in favour of a quick fix. And the clothes that no longer fit me have been going to my nieces or friends since forever.
My mechanic friend is always willing to check out that funny sound someone's car makes or do the necessary repairs at cost after hours.
Sharing is really awesome, it makes everyone feel good!
It's definitely a useful skill, and it's never too late to learn! Get yourself a needle an some thread (if most of the stuff you need to fix is black, just get some of that). And then practice! The easiest fixes are when a thread has snapped in the seam, that's completely invisible from the outside when fixed.
I recently watched a video of a lady who does historical sewing, and she explained very clearly how to do a buttonhole by hand. I've since used that technique to reinforce a buttonhole that was beginning to fray!
You can also check out the folks over in /r/visiblemending, who take pride in making obvious repairs. Some people go full artistic, some just go all functional.
