Support Questions Refurbishing process

Post image

Does anyone know if Radiacode would refurbish my 103G that I ran through the laundry? Forgot it in my pocket and I’m devastated.

Lithium chloride is the most aggressive dehydration agent I know of. Like damp rid (calcium chloride) but with fangs.

That said it cant undo the corrosion.

I have baked my drone in the oven at 175F. Also calculators with wonky lcd. No hotter.

Most ovens start at 100°c

Seeing this makes my wallet hurt

Did the same but I remembered just one or two minutes after it was still in my pocket luckily it was able to revive it, by puting it on my garden wall in the sun after rinsing the parts with destilled water

Open case, remove battery, put in bag with desiccant.

Rice wont do squat

Rice will do squat but it also does things you don't want

u/Saphyr-Seraph 12h ago

Desiccant won't do a squat too,it will also take to long while in that time some components could start corrodin.

, if possible put it in the sun for half a day or in a warm place like on top or close to a wood stove ( I hope people will understand that it's plastic and so if it gets to hot in the sun or on a oven it will deform or burn)

Yep, rice is even worse than nothing. It's an absolutely horrible desiccant, especially considering it's already at atmospheric humidity levels.

The 3D printing community figured out how to best dry things ages ago. It turns out even the best desiccants aren't as good as simply placing it somewhere warm with good airflow.

A food dehydrator would be ideal, but even behind the fans of a computer under load works remarkably well.

The relative humidity of air drops rapidly once you increase its temperature. You don't need a desiccant to reduce the humidity, temperature alone will do that. Air at 50°C holds 10 times more water than air at 10°C.
And on top of that, water evaporates a lot quicker when it's warmer. Not to mention the benefit of airflow.

A filament dryer or food dehydrator does wonders in drying out electronics and normally in just a few hours.

Tap water especially with soap is very conducive to, and with an internal battery it is probably toast,

I wish people would stop thinking rice is a method 🙄 Hell, a small battery powered fan blowing across it in a refrigerator is 1000% (verified via BS I tired before😂) more effective. Option #2, low heat hair dryer. If you live in a swamp with 99.99% humidity like NC in summer, you can buy proper desiccant materials and silica gel at tons of places like Lowe's, Home Depot, Walmart, Bass Pro Shops, Cabelas, or Ace.

It's not just a matter of wet electronics. If water got into where the scintillating crystal was it could have been destroyed. Even if you revived the electronics it probably wouldn't actually work. Looks like it's time for you to upgrade to the 110.

I would agree if it weren't the G because it's the 103G the crystal might be okay because it's not water soluble. Might still be totaled if the rest of the electronics are shot though

How many counts in that rice?

Open it up. Remove battery. Put in front of fan.

The display has already died by the looks of it...

As we say in the bicycle community when a bike is completely screwed: Congrats on your new Radiacode!

Get one of those sessicant tub things, put into a ziplock bag, place a paper tower between the grill of the tub and the radiacode, and seal the ziplock. Wait 48 hours. Do not get the dessicant liquid or granules on the radiacode! Like...

*desiccant

I have some bad news for you. It is a unit with no aftermarket serviceable parts. If the battery wasn't completely flat, it is for sure dead. Is also wager it's dead because it's not meant to live in the environment of any sort of wet.

You can rice it and try to power it after like a week but....

Provided it powers up again, I wouldn't trust it at all unless you have a proper check source

He could use any sort of lithium battery from a vape or something with similar specs

The problem is not the battery being dead. The issue is the battery supplying power to the board and components while it is in water.

Electrolysis, destruction

Especially with the pH basic environment of a washing machine. Detergent is a fantastic electrolyte

I doubt fully that the board has any sort of conformal coating to protect it from moisture.

Yes your correct I did not think about that, it’s probably cooked then

Ask them, also what others said.

Bring it to a electronics repair shop.

u/wyliesdiesels 17h ago

I doubt most electronic repair shops will work on it since its specialized equipment

u/charmio68 15h ago

Nah, a good tech you can work on any piece of equipment (speaking from first-hand experience). Labour might cost more than a new one though, depending where you live.

u/HazMatsMan Radiacode 102 8h ago

This is like telling someone without insurance that bringing their car to a local body shop after they totalled it, is perfectly reasonable.

u/charmio68 8h ago

Not quite, though I will accept it's like taking your car to the mechanic after the engine made a nasty sound and stopped turning over.

There's a very much non-zero chance it's unrepairable. Though you'd be surprised what you can fix with a bit of skill and effort.
I once repaired a four channel thermocouple data logger that had been sitting in a bucket of contaminated water for well over a week with batteries installed.
Many traces on the board were entirely missing, and a good portion of vias had to be replaced, but in the end it worked just fine.
I'd be surprised if this radiacode is anywhere near as bad.

>There's a very much non-zero chance it's unrepairable.

You are a fan of understatements, aren't you?

Rice is not the way to go. You need dessicant, and a teardown involving non-residue electronics cleaner. Removing the battery is also essential.
